Ep. 1389 The Hunt Begins Part 2

I wasn’t expecting it to die that easily, it must have been lower level than I thought. I am glad that I used lightning, blood in the water is never a good idea unless you are hunting sharks. I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know if the sharks will scare away the prey that I am after.

Maybe once I have hunted enough dragonfish I will hunt sharks to help me level up. However, first I need to find the dragonfish and kill enough of them to allow me to evolve. Right now I need one hundred and fifty-five evolution points to evolve to the next level.

Ideally, I would like for all of those to come with the tag dragon or at least something close to it. Considering I am hunting fish, probably the best that I can hope for is dragon-blooded. Still, I would prefer to avoid hunting drakes if I can, I don’t want to orphan any eggs.

I have more than enough on my plate right now, adopting more kids would not be a good move. I already feel bad that I don’t have more time for my kids, adding more would just make it worse. Not to mention, that they need more time and attention when they are younger.

The level of guilt I would feel for being busy would also be several times higher. Not to mention that with my luck the eggs would decide to hatch during the wedding. So, it will be much better if I can avoid that situation all together and just leave the drakes alone.

The dragon said that the drakes hunt the dragonfish, which should mean they swim near the surface. So I do the same as I start swimming around looking for them after putting the shark in my pouch. I shadow the coast since I think the drakes shouldn’t be flying too far out to hunt.

Every time I surface to get some air, I also scan the sky looking for any drakes. If I can find one and follow it, it should lead me right to the dragonfish, hopefully. I just need to find one dragonfish, then I can use my mana to scan for more of them.

Instead, the first thing I find is an island, so I head up to take a look at it, but it is mostly rock. I mark it on my map as a source of stone, if I need it, and then head back into the water. I am following the coast towards the west, away from the demon’s territory as I look for an island.

The dragonfish could be in the opposite direction, but I don’t want an island too close to the demons. A demon attack would not be good for a honeymoon, but that thought does give me an idea. Finding an island to put a gate platform on for a flanking attack might be a good idea.

We sailed along the northern coast, so I know that there aren’t any good spots along that side. If I can find one in the south, then I will keep that in mind, but it isn’t a priority right now. I am swimming along looking for the fish when something large comes up from the ocean floor.

Its shape is similar to that of an orca, but I don’t think that it is a whale, not judging from the teeth. The mouth is large enough to almost fit me in one bite and is lined with massive shark-like teeth. It comes up directly under me and I quickly dodge to the side to avoid the mouth.

The edge of its mouth grazes me as it passes, I almost didn’t get out of the way in time. It seems I have gotten rather rusty, I am too used to all the beasts on land fearing me. The ocean is a completely different situation, I am not the top predator here it seems.

The thing snaps around much faster than it should be able to with its size and comes at me again. I turn and aim myself at the beast and then when it opens its mouth I let out a lightning breath. Unfortunately, most of the lightning disperses into the surrounding water and only part of it hits the whale-thing.

It is not enough to kill it, but it does hurt it and make it change course enough to miss me again. However, as it passes me I grab ahold of it and dig my claws into its hide. My claws slice through its hide for a few feet and then snag onto something more solid.

It heavily outweighs me so when my claws gain hold I find myself dragged along for a ride. However, I have to be careful here since I need air sometime soon and I doubt that it does. I can’t let it take me too deep either, since the water pressure could become a factor.

However, that is exactly what it seems to want to do, it is headed straight down. I am basically clinging to the side of a bus that is sinking towards the bottom. I can’t afford to let it drag me too deep, so I let go and start swimming back towards the surface.

However, I keep an eye below me to watch for it to come back and try to bite me again. Surprisingly, I don’t see any sign of it as I swim back to the surface to get some air. Maybe the thing decided that I wasn’t worth the effort, or that it would take too much damage if it continued.

I keep searching for it, but there is no sign of the thing and after a couple of minutes I relax. I did make it bleed, so I also check for sharks, but there are none to be seen. That strikes me as odd, unless the thing that tried to eat me is enough to scare them away.

Another few minutes have passed and I have gone back to searching for dragonfish. However, I am being a lot more careful to keep an eye out for threats as I search. Being on my guard is the only reason that I manage to spot the whale-thing before it hits me.

Even though I was watching for it, I have less than a second between spotting it and it hitting me. I can’t move fast enough to avoid it, all I can do is turn so that it can’t swallow me. I end up with my feet on its lower jaw and my hands on its upper jaw with my claws digging into it.

It is moving fast and it hits me like a freight train, it hits me hard enough that I almost lose my grip. I just barely manage to hang on as it launches the both of us out of the water and into the air. It ends up being a good thing for me since the impact knocked the breath right out of me.

It tries to bite down on me, but I keep my body rigid and resist with all my strength. Even then, it is slowly overpowering me and closing its teeth down on me. I take a deep breath, lower my head into its mouth, and let loose a full strength lightning breath.
