The afternoon air carried the scent of fresh earth and blooming foliage, a warm breeze whispering through the endless expanse of trees. Their leaves, rich with bright colors, fluttered like countless tiny banners swaying in rhythm with nature’s quiet hum. The sun above, a golden orb resting in the sky’s embrace, bathed the world in its soft, magical glow, painting soft long shadows over the grass-strewn path that stretched endlessly ahead.
Emma walked, her steps light against the soft terrain, her gaze drawn upward.
High above, birds flitted between the branches, their forms both familiar and alien. They resembled doves, yet their wings shimmered like crystalline glass, catching the afternoon sunlight in refracted hues of silver and pale blue. They danced between the boughs, flapping softly before settling onto the branches as they perched in clusters of eight to fifteen on each tree, their gentle coos blending with the rustling foliage
Her eyes traced their movements, watching as they nestled close to one another, as if bound by something beyond instinct.. something like family.
They’re always together, she mused, lips parting slightly as a faint smile touched her face. Like a big family...
A small warmth settled in her chest as she continued her way forward, following the winding path beneath her feet. Yet, the peace of the moment soon gave way to a creeping realization.
She blinked.
And then, she stopped.
Her brows furrowed slightly, her head tilting in mild disbelief.
Wait...
A sharp exhale left her lips as she placed a hand on her forehead, dragging it down her face in exasperation.
I didn’t ask Luna for directions.
She closed her eyes briefly, inhaling deeply as if the air itself could somehow ease her frustration. The path ahead stretched infinitely forward, its edges disappearing into the soft, swaying horizon. She had no idea where it led... no idea if it would take her anywhere near the Tower of Mutation.
And now, she was lost.
Emma groaned, rubbing the back of her neck as she scanned the terrain for any sign of another traveler, anybody to be exact... But there was nothing, only trees, endless and serene, their vibrant canopies rippling against the golden sky.
Great. Just great.
She dropped her arms to her sides, letting out another tired breath. At this rate, she could wander for hours and still end up nowhere.
Her thoughts circled back to Luna, to her last words before parting.

"Let your mind guide you on this journey."
The moment the words came, Emma stilled.
Her mind?
She frowned slightly, her fingers curling absently against the fabric of her skirt as she tried to make sense of it.
Let my mind guide me...
She thought deeper, her brows knitting as the meaning eluded her.
Does she mean… the ability to read thoughts? But that only works if people are around, right?
She sighed, the weight of the situation pressing against her shoulders.
And I’m alone.
A moment passed. Then another.
Frustration tingled at the edges of her patience, but she shook it off.
She had to think.
Emma closed her eyes, inhaling slowly.
Then, an idea struck her.
Her brows lifted slightly as she straightened her posture.
What if I try expanding it?
The idea clicked into place like a puzzle piece finally fitting where it belonged.
Her pulse quickened, and without hesitation, she let her mind reach.
She stood still, the sounds of the rustling leaves and distant bird calls fading into the background as she focused.
She had only ever read thoughts for the first time with Luna. Never wider. Never further.
But if she stretched beyond that.. if she pushed her ability to extend outward
Then maybe...
Maybe she could find someone.
She concentrated, reaching into the quiet. Searching. Listening.
Silence.
She waited.
Still, nothing.
The air remained unchanged. The world around her stayed still.
Emma’s lips pressed together in a tight line as she exhaled sharply through her nose.
No thoughts. No voices. No hints of another presence.
She opened her eyes, her frustration bubbling to the surface.
Useless.
Her body moved on its own, steps sluggish as she wandered toward the nearest tree. She leaned against its sturdy trunk, her forehead resting against the rough bark.
The shade beneath the towering branches cooled her skin, the golden afternoon sun casting shifting patterns over the ground as the leaves trembled overhead.
She let out another long breath, slow and tired.
"If only I could hear other things too..." she muttered absentmindedly.
And then as if hearing her thoughts..
A voice came..
It came not from the world around her, but from within.
You could hear.
Emma’s body stiffened.
Her breath hitched slightly as she jerked slightly, pushing off from the tree, her heart pounded in her chest, surprised, too surprised.
But after a few quick reasoning, she quickly brushed the thought aside. It’s just my mind playing tricks on me, she told herself. She had just spoken about hearing things, so naturally, her mind had echoed the sentiment back. It was nothing.
She let out a deeper sigh, bringing a hand to her forehead yet another time... This isn’t getting me anywhere.
But then...
Hello.
The voice was clearer this time. It echoed within her mind, distinct and separate from her own thoughts.
But, there was no one.
Her pulse quickened slightly as she calmed herself and spoke.. "Uhmm... Hello?" she said hesitantly, waiting for a response.
And it came.
Hello. Nice to meet you.
Emma’s breath stilled as she turned sharply, scanning the empty surroundings curiously.. Her fingers twitched slightly. "Who's there?" she asked, her voice firm and waiting..
I’m here. Right here. The one you were resting on moments ago.
Her mind raced to understand what it meant.. Resting on…
Her gaze stopped at the tree she had just leaned against. The bark was the same as any other, rough and textured, standing tall like the countless others around it.
She hesitated before placing her hand against the trunk. "...This one?"
Yes. This one.
She took a step back. "But... trees don’t talk?"
Or do they?, she couldn't help but ask herself...
