Chapter 7

Light Wielder glowed bright blue as Prince Albert yelled on his horse charging headlong into the orc lines.

“Kill Vul’Goth in order to break the orc morale or die valiantly and use Light Wielder to end it all; reinforcements won’t arrive in time,” he thought. "Fuck this damn prophesy and war!"

Albert knew that the latter option was suicide, but he understood he had to do it if all else failed. His army was getting surrounded and his army was only able to kill off barely half the orc horde.

He clashed violently into the orc lines as his horse flung him forward forcing him into a forward roll. He got up and began slashing through orcs as the rest of his royal guard tried following him. The royal guards threw themselves at any orcs that were trying to kill Prince Albert as they became human shields. There were 60 royal guards with Prince Albert initially. After the charge, only 20 were left standing creating a circle around Prince Albert to protect him at all costs.

Desmond and the rest of the infantry clashed hard into the advancing orc infantry and pikes. Someone cried out, “To the Prince! We must break through to reach him! His guards and him are surrounded!”

The mass of footman and knights pressed into the mass of orcs. Closer and closer, the wave of humans crashed into the orc lines like two massive amebas engulfing each other. They were pushing closer to the prince, but with violent retribution. The orcs were determined to break the humans and kill Prince Albert.

Desmond slashed through a handful of orcs until he found himself nearly falling backwards into the ditch carved in the aftermath of Vul’Goth’s blast. He quickly turned around to see an orc throw a knight directly at Desmond. He was knocked off his feet instantly losing his sword from the sudden impact. He fell awkwardly into the crater and was made unconscious as a handful of bodies landed or rolled next to him.

Albert found himself fully surrounded. The royal guards were putting up an excellent fight, but were getting cut down very quickly. One by one they screamed in agony as they were torn apart by the orc weapons. However; for every royal guard killed, three orcs would perish as well.

The last of his royal guards, Jarrett, was speared by three orcs and shoved into the air like a macabre human flag. He cried out in agony, “My liege! I’m sorry!”

“Jarrett,” cried out Albert as he slashed the head off an orc furiously.

There was no time to be distracted by fallen comrades. Albert was slashed across his back and a crossbow bolt struck him in the side. He immediately turned around and lopped off the head of the orc that struck him and killed two others with a follow up slash cutting them in half. He made one massive swing around himself to push the surrounding orcs back from him making two feet of space around him. Ten orcs were killed by his swing. Albert then pulled the cross bolt out of his side cursing violently.

Covered in blood and fatally wounded, Albert screamed at the orcs, “Is that the best you can do? COME ON!”

With every thrust and slash of Light Wielder, he would knock back and kill a five orcs at a time. He was shot two more times with crossbow bolts in his left leg and left arm. He quickly killed the orcs that shot him and he pulled out the bolts. One orc thrusted a spear tip into Albert’s right thigh. Albert grabbed the spear to pull the orc closer to him. In doing so, he impaled the orc with Light wielder. Albert twisted Light Wielder as he stared the orc in the eyes as he died from his guts being eviscerated by Albert. The orc was then kicked as Albert pulled Light Wielder out from the orc along with pulling the spear out of his leg. He broke the spear and impaled two charging orcs. He made a wide, circular swing as a blue light cleanly sliced through eight orcs like butter.

Albert stood tall and yelled once more with more anger, “I’m still standing here! FUCKING COME ON!”

He broke a few orc shields and slashed into a mass of orcs sending limbs flying into the air. Light Wielder cut through the orc armor like the armor was paper. He made a large downward thrust as a blue light emitted from Light Wielder. He struck the ground after slicing cleanly through an orc causing a mini shockwave sending the orcs further back from him. Despite this, the orcs kept pressing into Albert determined to kill him at all costs.

Despite the heroics, the orc pikes were beginning to completely encircle the army on the plains and were pushing the men closer into the center of the battlefield. Albert knew this. He looked around and saw Vul'Goth marching towards him with an aura of pure rage emitting off of him.

“You,” Albert thought loudly. "Vol... Shit!"

Vul’Goth was marching towards him ignoring the chaos and bloodshed around him.

Vul’Goth was covered in blood and was walking fast towards Prince Albert. Vul’Goth’s red eyes had an intense blood lust burning in him. The enormous and intense urge to kill was the only thing on his mind as if a demonic and enticing voice was echoing in his head.

A few brave footmen and knights tried to get in front of Vul’Goth, but they were immediately struck down like they were a minor nuisance to him. Earth Breaker was caving in the heads and faces of the men who dared cross him or slow him down.

One knight had his helmet knocked off and had his face crushed by Vul’Goth’s massive hand. The knight’s face was crushed like a watermelon as blood spurted out of the cracks in the helmet.

One footman had his shoulder separate from its socket after being struck by Earth Breaker. Vul’Goth tossed him aside for a few orcs to instantly hack the footman to pieces. He threw the small axe from his leg at a footman’s exposed face instantly killing him.

Another knight tried in vain to slow down Vul’Goth. The knight’s shield was broken by a massive strike by Earth Breaker breaking the knight’s arm. A second strike struck the knight in the face and Vul’Goth had to forcibly pull out Earth Breaker from the knight’s helmet and what was left of his face. He then picked up the knight’s body and used it as a temporary shield from a few arrows and the human gunners.

He dropped the knight’s body down after three arrows and two musket balls were embed in the back. He shot a few fire balls out of Earth Breaker into a small mass of knights charging at him instantly burning them.

Vul’Goth was annoyed, but overall unphased by this. All he saw was Albert and all he could think about was to kill him as his red eyes glowed brighter and brighter the closer he got.

Vul’Goth began to sprint once he was within 30 feet of Albert with a thunderous roar. Albert looked to the left of him seeing Vul’Goth charge towards him. His pupils retracted and a cold sweat engulfed him. Albert realized he could do only one thing now. The one thing Tom told him not to do.

Albert had no choice. It was the only way to ensure the orc horde would never advance further into the kingdom. He had to use the power of Light Wielder.

He looked around to hear his men cry out, “We’re surrounded! Fight for yourselves! Fall back! Fall Back!”

Albert also noticed majority of his men were being felled by the overwhelming orcs. Albert said to himself in a defeated tone, “Forgive me Tom… Forgive me Vol… Forgive me… But I must… My dear Elizabeth, I love you. I always have. I’ll never leave you!”

He took one last swing around him to make some space killing six orcs in the process. Albert pointed Light Wielder down towards the ground as it shined as bright as the sun. He looked up as the rain was hitting his face. He closed his eyes thinking about his family and his friendship with Vul’Goth in the desert He thought about how this war was pointless overall. He thought about his family, his siblings, and his lessons with Tom. He lastly thought about his wife and unborn child. He thought of Elizabeth waiting patiently as she looked over the balcony at the south longing for his safe return. He thought about what it would be like if he were to be there for his unborn child and had the chance to be a father.

He roared out with tears in his eyes, “GIVE ME THE POWER!”

Albert thrusted Light Wielder into the ground with a loud and painful yell cracking the ground in all directions. Vul’Goth saw this. He stopped running and immediately grabbed a heavily armored orc to shield himself as he desperately tried to back up and kneel down. The anger and bloodlust immediately left him. His eyes changed back to blue. He was no longer the terrifying leader of the Black Horde. He was, for a moment, a scared orc trying to survive.

Vul’Goth, in that instance, remembered a time he hid from his dad after he damaged his dad’s helmet. Vul’Goth always feared the anger and wrath of his father. Wurgol walked into Vul’Goth’s room.

Wurgol was a massive orc with a prickly, grey beard and one missing eye scarred over. He was wearing a sleeveless tunic and loose fitting pants. He had some fluff to his build; a bit of a gut, but still a powerful warrior nonetheless. His massive arms were covered in healing tattoos from the orc shamans.

He was barefoot on the wooden floor of the room. The small bed was tucked into the corner and there was a small pillow fort at the foot of the bed. A handful of crayon drawings of Vul’Goth’s family were on the wall just above the bed. Wurgol knew Vul’Goth was hiding from him.

Wurgol sighed and said softly in Orcish, “Son… Just come out here. I’m not going to hit you. Your mother made me swear I couldn’t.”

Wurgol scratched a fresh bruise on the back of his thick neck that was made when a cast iron pan was thrown at him earlier.

A tiny, two foot tall orc child appeared from under the bed and pillows. Messy black hair and dimples with two tiny tusks sticking out of an underbite. The orc child was holding a stuffed bat doll with different sized button eyes. The orc child also had an oversized night shirt that dragged on the ground. It was one of Wurgol’s night shirts.

Wurgol didn’t have any anger in his eyes or on his face. Just a tired, disappointed look.

Wurgol knelt down to talk to Vul’Goth in a gentle, but rough voice. “Now son… Why did you think using my helmet was a good idea for play time?”

“I see you wear all the time and mom told me it can stop anything. So I thought it could take a bunch of bricks and eggs… I’m sorry,” replied young Vul’Goth in a squeaky voice with tears welling up.

Wurgol smiled. He wiped away a tear from Vul’Goth’s cheek with his massive thumb. He replied, “You know… The first step in becoming a chieftain is embracing fear head on and taking responsibility for your actions. I know I lose my temper a lot and that I becomes a scary monster leaving holes in the walls… But you … I care for you and your mother with all my heart… Someday, you’ll take over this horde. But for now you just need to play and not touch any of Pa’s stuff, alright young pup?”

  “What about your helmet?”

“Don’t worry about it… I’ll make a new one… Never be afraid of anything. Whatever comes your way, you face it head on like a true orc would… Come here,” said Wurgol hugging Vul’Goth.

Vul’Goth closed his eyes and held the other terrified orc up as a shield muttering to himself, “I’m sorry, pa! I’m afraid!”

An enormous blue light emitted from Albert and Light Wielder causing a massive explosion of blue light blasting and killing everyone that was around Albert. Unlike Earth Breaker, Light Wielder was more of a deadly shockwave more than a burning beam of destruction. There were flames, but not enough to engulf everyone. Everyone on the flat plain, and not in the ditch or atop the hill, was knocked down and killed instantly by the shockwave. Those closes to Albert were nearly vaporized by the blue flash of light.

In an instant, all the fighting stopped.

  Everyone.

For one mile, it seemed that everyone and everything around Albert was dead. The bodies strewed about the blood and rain soaked land like field of freshly trimmed grass. No more clanging of swords, axes, spears, arrows, and shields. No more screams of pain, fear, and anger. No more sounds. Just the sound of the rain falling and tapping amongst the armor of men and orc.

  The battle was over.
