Chapter 6

It became a chaotic brawl in the aftermath of the cavalry charge. 4,000 men and cavalry were brawling with only half of the orc horde. Heavy rain washed down violently. The once green grassland turned into a muddy and bloody slurry of flesh and broken armor. Blood and mud coagulated on the ground creating a broth-like mess as more and more bodies fell or were cut apart.

Sometimes, it took three men to take down one orc. Sometimes, all it took was one well-placed sword or spear thrust. Some of the orcs were crushing the skulls of the men with their axes, boots, shields, or hands. One man was being forcibly drowned in the mud and blood by an orc with one hand. Two footmen were spearing an orc into the air like a sis-kabob. One orc managed to cut off the head of a knight with his jagged sword and was immediately cut down by knights and footmen who in turn were immediately hacked and speared to death by a group of orcs. Limbs went flying everywhere. The orcs excelled in chaotic battles; however, they were losing momentum and the humans were slowly regaining the upper hand by enveloping them and stopping their advance.

Desmond was in the middle of a fight with an orc as Johnathan came running by to help. Desmond slashed at the orc’s exposed chest as Johnathan stabbed it in the back. Both took turns stabbing the orc in the head. Both stood up and nodded. Johnathon jumped on the back of an orc stabbing him repeatedly in the neck. Desmond bashed a charging orc in the face with his shield. Both were in the thick of fighting now.

The arrows began firing again as some of the sharpshooting gunners were taking pop – shots at what they could hit from atop the hill.

Vul’Goth advanced forward with the rest of the second and third wave of orcs just a few hundred yards away from the chaos in front of him. The Grave Guards stayed behind with the reserves. The human arrows were forcing Vul’Goth to hold back a bit. He looked around and felt as if he needed to end it soon.

“Their reinforcements will arrive,” he thought. "Fuck!"

A bloodied orc captain ran up to him yelling, “Boss, their arrows and guns are cutting us down form the hill! We’re out of range and their calvary has broken through our main line. First wave is stopped! We need to use artillery on them!"

“No… Save the artillery for when we take a city! Hold back the rest of the orcs! If we send them in now they will be cut down over time… Signal the pikes to push in and surround them on the flanks… I’ll end this my way!”

“Boss! You certain? Our forces are still in there!”

“YES,” Vul’Goth said in a guttural tone.

The orc captain yelled at one of his orc underlings to run back and tell the rest to hold back and to send word for the pikes to encircle. Vul’Goth pointed Earth Breaker forward as a red glow began to emit from the end of it.

The orc captain yelled to Vul’Goth worriedly, “War Chief! Our forces are still in the thick of it! You’ll hit them as well! Argh – FUCK! Hit the dirt! Everyone get down! Stand still! Hold back! That’s an order! DOWN!”

“AHHH! HAHA! HAAAAA,” yelled Vul’Goth in a mix of twisted delight and anger.

The orc captain roared at the rest of the orcs to fall back a bit and hit the dirt. A small amount of the orcs from the first wave heard the order and immediately began to run behind Vul’Goth’s position with most of the footmen and knights being left confused. Earth Breaker began to glow brighter and brighter each second. His eyes were glowing a harsh red.

  10 seconds past.

The sound muted and time appeared to have slowed down again. Some of the dirt from the ground began to vibrate and move the air as a low and harsh hum began to vibrate the ground. The rain was being unnaturally repelled by Earth Breaker as well.

Vul’Goth tensed and braced his feet firmly into the ground nearly sinking into it. The hair on his arms and neck began to raise. Goosebumps popped up all throughout his body. A vibration was being sent through his arms as his veins began to bulge unnaturally and shine bright red. The rain drops on his exposed skin was steaming off of him. His eyes glowed a harsh brightness like a fiery brimstone. Vul’Goth yelled in a mix pain, anger, and twisted satisfaction as a massive, red beam was shot out of Earth Breaker sounding like a hundred canons being fired at once.

The red beam spewed forth causing a shockwave to knock everyone behind Vul’Goth backwards a few feet. The red beam was as large as a war ship, thrusting forward slightly off the ground burning and vaporizing whoever was in front of the blast. If the shockwave didn’t kill them, then the fiery beam would. Those that saw the beam just before it fired were frozen in shock upon realization. There was nothing anyone could do to escape. Desmond saw the beam heading right for him and froze in fearful awe.

“By the gods,” Desmond said to himself. “I’m dead. This is it. I’m sorry mother. I’m sorry father. FORGIVE ME!”

The bright, red beam blinded Desmond, but Johnathan immediately jumped on top of Desmond to shield him from the blast. Desmond was instantly knocked to the ground with Johnathan on top of him screaming frantically, “Keep your head down Des- AGGGHHHHH!”

His back was exposed just slightly to the edge of the red beam as it was carving through everyone and hitting into the slope of the hill behind the main body of the human lines. The human captain was instantly vaporized as he was shoving his fingers into an orc’s eyes while being hacked in his back by a two other orcs. Johnathan’s back and legs were instantly torn and burnt away. Johnathan screamed an unnatural blood curdling scream as the beam went past.

Orcs, humans, horses, and earth were immediately vaporized into a black ash of destruction that carved a ditch half a mile long, as wide as a war ship, and as deep as 5 feet stopping at the base of the hill. Sound seemed to stop after the beam impacted the hill leaving a massive burnt crater. Hundreds, if not about a thousand men and orc, were killed instantly.

Desmond was silent and unsure of what just happened . He could barely eke out a word as he gently shoved the body of Johnathan off of him. His hearing went mute for a few minutes as all he could hear was a constant ringing. There were flecks of black ash and rain hitting his helmet just barely seeping its way through his protective visor and onto his face. Desmond sat up looking at what was left of Johnathan. Desmond’s shield disintegrated into a blackened, ashy mess as he slowly took the braces off. Desmond checked his head to see if his helmet was still intact. He looked meekly at Johnathan or what he thought was him.

Johnathan’s helmet was blow away. His back and majority of his flesh was gone. His legs were just burnt bones. His innards strewed out of him like a knocked over bowl of gravy. The smell of burnt steak and burnt metal lingered in the air. The only undamaged thing Desmond noticed was a locket hanging from Johnathan’s neck. Desmond just sat there staring at Johnathan’s burnt and partially vaporized corpse. Johnathan only had a look of pure pain on his lifeless face. His red freckles appeared to be dim just like his eyes. His short, red hair was the only color left on him.

Desmond tried reaching out, but he couldn’t. He teared up and pathetically whimpered with a voice crack, “John… Ja… Johnathan…What? What was that? Johnathan! Johnathan!”

A handful of footmen came running by and two of them dragged Desmond away from Johnathan’s corpse and the newly formed crater. Desmond just stared at the destruction as he was motionless in their arms. The footmen were dragging Desmond back into the base of the gentle slope.

One footman yelled to Desmond, “On your feet! We’re reforming the line. The prince is charging in with a reserve unit! The orc pikes are swarming in from the flanks! We need to move now! Take this sword and get ready!”

Albert watched from atop of the hill and was lost for words.

“It does that? You fucking bastard! I have no choice,” Albert quietly muttered to himself repeatedly. "I have to."

Jarrett looked at Albert and yelled, “Sire! We need to reinforce the line now! Look! They are moving in!”

Jarrett pointed at Vul’Goth’s position and seeing the orcs mass push forward. He also pointed at the flanks noting the orc pikes enveloping in a crescent moon-formation.

Albert shook his head to get back to reality. He ordered, “We need to kill him! Jarret, you and the rest with me! Move!”

  “Yes sir!”

Vul’Goth stood still for a few moments taking in what he just did. He pulled his feet out of the ground. A deranged laugh slowly took over Vul’Goth as he was beyond shocked by what happened. The unnatural voice in his head cried out, "CHARGE!"

He roared out sprinting violently towards the human lines with bright, red eyes of anger and bloodlust. The rest of the orcs followed after him.

Prince Albert noticed this. The pikes were already tearing into the flanks and closing the gaps. He gave the order for the archers to fire at will by shooting a flare into the sky from one of his royal guards. Some of the sharpshooting gunners sat atop the hill and were taking pot shots at the advancing orcs. Albert, his royal guards, and a reserve calvary unit charged down the hill directly at Vul'Goth in the center.

Someone gave the order to charge forward once again. Desmond found himself getting pushed forward back into the fight. There was no time to process what had happened. Just pure survival at this point. With anger and heartache, he charged forth with the rest of the footmen.
