Jenny stared at the fire in the distance and started to bounce up and down in her seat as they drove closer to it. They were going to get to be heroes. Jenny had been training for this moment. She patted Greenie one and two in her pocket. They were good boys and didn’t freak out on her when the evil sound attacked them. She hadn’t even thought about them until she woke back up after helping save mister Higgins from Daddy.

  Miss Holly was driving the car now since mister Higgens hadn’t woken up yet. She spoke to Jenny and her parents, “I’m not sure what we’re going to see in there, but we need to gather information for now. Let’s not rush into danger. You all just barely escaped whatever the hell that sound did to you.”

  “I can use Greenie to fly around and look at stuff if you want,” Jenny offered, feeling proud of her idea.

  “Colin, you can sense things from afar, so I think that’s our best chance at scouting ahead,” Holly said.

  Did Jenny just get ignored by Miss Holly? Maybe she just didn’t hear her. Jenny decided to speak up again, “I can play lookout better than Daddy. Greenie can fly around and nobody will get hurt that way.”

  Mommy ruffled Jenny’s hair and said, “Sweetie, I know you can sense things too, but I don’t want you getting hurt or pushing yourself.”

  “I won’t get hurt though,” Jenny argued.

  “I can’t sense any life in the town yet. We need to get closer,” Daddy said.

  Jenny scrunched her face up in frustration and pulled Greenie out of her pocket. She transformed him into a bug-man with wings and let him fly around the car, land on the dashboard, then solute to Miss Holly, “See? Greenie can help.”

  Miss Holly pulled over on the side of the road and looked back and forth between Jenny and Greenie.

  “You’re controlling this thing?” Holly asked.

  Jenny nodded, feeling super proud of herself, “Yup. I can control two at the same time, but it’s easier to do just one. I’m a super hero.”

  The car got super quiet and Jenny was pretty sure it was because of how impressed all the adults were.

  “Jenny, are you okay?” Miss Holly asked.

  Mommy spoke up, “She’s actually handled everything rather well. It seems they experimented on her, but stopped before there was permanent damage. Jenny found the whole experience fun, but if I ever get my hands on Chuck, I will wring his neck. Holy, please don’t report anything about Colin or Jenny. I know what governments do to people just to find things out.”

  Holly nodded slowly, “I’m not sure what my report is going to read at this point. The way I was undermined by my own agency, I don’t really know what the hell is happening or who to trust. The one thing I know is that you are good people and I would never do anything to intentionally endanger your family.”

  “Thank you,” Kristy said.

  Jenny wasn’t really sure what they meant by everything, so she jumped in and said, “So do you want me to have Greenie look at things?”

  Holly nodded, “I think so. But please be careful. I don’t want Greenie to get hurt just in case it might hurt you.”

  Jenny saluted and sent Greenie out of the car window and towards the smoke rising in the distance.
