  The volcanic glass beneath their feet crackled with every step, veins of magma pulsing like arteries. The heat distortion made the air shimmer, and the sun overhead cast shadows that moved independently of their sources.

  “Before the roots learned to grow,” she said quietly.

  “We conserve where we can,” Ironstride said.

  Kaiden approached the crystal formation. It pulsed faintly, in sync with the Photosphere.

  “The roots grow too fast,” a voice said. Female, authoritative. “We cannot contain them through conventional means.”

  “Then we fracture the source,” another replied. He sounded male, and slightly older. “Divide the sun’s light. Scatter its influence.”

  “That will destabilize the entire region.”

  “The region is already lost. This buys us time.”

  “Time for what?”

  “For those who come after to finish what we could not.”

  Kaiden stumbled backward. The courtyard had returned back to its normal state.
