After dying in a fire, a former librarian meets Geshich, the god of stories. Begging for another chance, he’s reborn as Caleb Lightbane in a strange medieval world where women are superhuman warriors and men wield magic. Geshich grants his wish on one condition: this life must be worth telling. Seeking a life worthy of legend, Caleb accidentally kills several people he thinks are bandits and discovers a horrifying trunk containing an alien substance and the dismembered bodies of young girls. Driven by guilt, he spends months learning healing magic and manages to restore them to life. When the girls awaken, Caleb panics and lies, claiming they were sacrificed by a cult devoted to a god of Entropy and that he is their divine savior, the Prophet of Light. His lie spirals out of control when he accidentally creates a clone of himself who happily becomes the Evil Prophet. Together, the two begin shaping rival faiths through staged battles, fake prophecies, and careful manipulation. But their elaborate mythmaking may have attracted the attention of more than just the god who demanded a good story.
