There really is no reason to fight it when it is so easy to avoid the thing by flying. I cover miles in a couple of minutes and then return to the water to start searching again. However, it is only a short while later that I once again detect the big thing on the edge of my scanning range.
I can’t be sure if it is the same one or another of the same species, but it moves exactly the same. I just don’t understand how it could have tracked me while I was flying above the water. If it was closer it could have tracked me by sight, but it shouldn’t be that fast and I didn’t let it get that close.
If it is the same one, then its ability to track me is pretty scary to say the least. Since I don’t detect any more dragonfish, I return to the air and fly to another area. This time I stay in the air longer and travel further before returning to the water to check again.
When I scan the new area, I don’t detect the big thing, but I do detect a small group of dragonfish. They are in the direction I came from, but the thing shouldn’t have followed me this far. They have a huge territory from what I know, but I flew a long way this time so it should be safe.
Besides, I am not going to stop hunting dragonfish until I have enough to evolve. Even if that means using my Meg form to fight the big thing, which I don’t want to do. Although, I am kind of curious as to how well I could fight the thing using my normal form and my magic.
Using my Meg form it took a long time to win the fight, but I was a lot weaker back then. However, as much as I want to see how well I can fight, I have a mission right now. So, I swim towards the school of dragonfish and tear into them just as soon as I get within range.
12 Dragonfish defeated! 300,000 Exp gained!
I quickly stuff the corpses into my pouch, but my next scan detects something new. A large mass just entered my range coming up from the depths beneath me. Its shape is different from what has been chasing me, but it is still too distant to get a good scan of it.
I am close to the surface and can flee easily, so I decide to stay and wait for it to get closer. It is a pretty stupid move, but this is what my curiosity demands, so I sit and wait. Luckily, it is rising fast so I don’t have to wait for long, but the answer surprises me.
The only way I can describe the thing is as a lobster with an extra pair of arms. That doesn’t sound very dangerous until you consider that it is the size of a fishing trawler. I want no part of fighting it, but as I am just about to take off I detect something else.
Somehow, the dino-croc is still following me and just entered my scanning range. I freeze for a second and then with a grin I start swimming straight towards the dino-croc. At this point I keep scanning continuously so that I can keep track of both of them.
This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it
The lobster changes course to pursue me and soon we are both heading straight at the dino. If these two things want to eat me, then they can just fight each other over me! As the distance between us lessens I start reducing my speed to try and get them to reach me at the same time.
This is dangerous, but the thought of the two of them fighting as I fly away has me giggling. I should probably not tell anyone about this little stunt or I will end up getting lectured. The lobster suddenly speeds up and gets closer to me, but the croc also speeds up.
I have to alter my speed several times, but in the end I manage to keep them about the same distance from me. Then, when I have no more room to maneuver, I suddenly head straight up and take to the sky. Behind me, a huge area of water suddenly erupts as the two massive creatures collide.
Instead of flying away like any sane person would, I hover above the water and keep scanning. It isn’t as good as seeing it with my eyes, but I am able to follow most of the action. The croc managed to get first blood, but since then the lobster has been the one winning.
Considering I have no idea how the croc has been tracking me, I am kind of rooting for the lobster. I certainly don’t want the croc tracking me back to my island, so it dying here would be a relief. Besides, the lobster is slower, so I would have an easier time getting away from it.
The croc seems to be having trouble getting through the lobster’s shell, but the lobster isn’t having the same problem. The croc is already bleeding from a dozen wounds inflicted by the lobster’s claws. The main advantage that the croc has is that the lobster has trouble turning around.
It has managed to hit the lobster’s tail several times, it just hasn’t done much damage. The croc has the advantage in speed, it could easily get away, but it just keeps stubbornly attacking. The lobster can’t catch up to it, but it keeps managing to counter when the croc attacks.
The damage to the croc slowly builds up until it starts affecting its speed and maneuverability. As it slows down, the lobster manages to hit it more and more and the damage keeps piling up. I was thinking about taking on the winner, but the lobster still hasn’t taken much damage.
The croc slows down enough that the lobster finally manages to grab it with all four claws. At that point, the lobster starts descending and drags the croc down with it. By the time they leave my scanning range, the croc is barely moving and it has obviously lost the fight.
I may not have gotten anything from the fight, but I certainly enjoyed watching it. Unfortunately, scanning constantly to watch the fight burned through a lot of my mana. So, once they disappear into the depths I turn and fly back to my island, but I stay well above the water.
Without being able to scan, I would have no warning if something decided to jump out at me. So, I stay high in the sky and enjoy a nice leisurely flight back to the island. After I land, I take out the thirty-two dragonfish corpses and start removing and absorbing the cores.
Absorb Activated: 32 Evolution Points gained!
Evolution Points: 345/400 Evolution Level: 2/5
Now I only need another fifty-five more points to be able to evolve to the next level. If I am lucky, I can manage that in another day or two of hunting, if nothing else comes up anyway. I think that I will rest and relax for now, then later I will hunt some more.
