26 – City of Progress (3)

"I understand your situation real well."

Ezreal procimed while pointing his thumb at himself.

"Say the names that you know when I point at it."

He started right away, pointing at items on a paper on the wall. I followed along seriously.

"Gear.""Gear is fine but cog is another word, go on.""Don't know. Don't know."

"How do you not know this? This is way too slow. How about throwing people into a room with pictures and numbers matching up on a paper, getting them to write it down before starting the tour."

He got more and more excited as he spoke. The pn seems good but. I held up a hand to interject.

"What if they can't write? Or can't read? I know my writing is sloppy because I was traveling for half a year."

His shoulders sunk down a bit.

"Guess we'll do this the hard way... This is a door, you know whata door is. But when this door slides, it becomes a sliding door! If it rotates, it's a rotating door. Depending on wether it's you pushing or the door pushing it's an automatic door. These principles apply to a lot of stuff."

  "Lunch break!"

Ezreal held up a silver clock on a chain. Anna spoke right after.

"Where do you want to eat? I'm treating today."

I looked at her in shock. The nonchance at treating people to food without any regard to where they're going is amazing. Ezreal on the other hand bowed.

  "Thank you missus!"

The sudden bow at Anna was unexpected. But it seemed that this was a common occurrence.

"How about we go to my favorite spot? It's on the south side. After visiting the north side you have to check out the south side right? After the meal we can go to Zalie's and get him fitted."

Anna nodded, before gesturing to lead the way. Winding through the corridors we left the museum. Immediately, the harsh sunlight blinded us as we shrank back into the safety of the shadows. Rubbing our eyes, we walked out to the street after waving farewell to the receptionist.

The sun was high above the sky yet some pces bzed with heat and others cold as heck. People stayed inside with delivery people dragging carts of meals to workshops.

"So how'd you get to Piltover?"

"Ku heum. You see, I'm all the way from Demacia. My magic started awakening so my mother wanted to send me by boat to Ionia. And -"

"You got into a shipwreck!? And then got picked up by her on the way?"

Ezreal interjected with shining eyes as he got closer. I pushed him slightly on the shoulder.

"Let me talk. In Demacia, there is people called Mageseekers. They go around removing people with magic in Demacia. They're a joke, ha, they use magic to fight magic. Where was I. Yeah, so as I was going down the river, we got intercepted. I almost made it out when their petricite turned a strange color after touching me."

We arrived at an extremely rge bridge spanning a canal. Water sparkled as boats led ships towards the other side. Leaning on the guard rail, I continued.

"After a fight, I got caught. A bridge exactly like this one colp-"

  BOOM BOOM BANG

A series of explosions started from the other side of the bridge. Colorful plumes of blue and pink smoke lifted into the air as a panicked crowd surged towards our side.

Anna froze as she sck jawed at the coincidence. Immediately, I locked eyes with Ezreal. I reached out to pick up Anna as he nodded and led ahead, shoving people aside. I followed his trail while holding Anna as we ran back to the North side.

More explosions shook the ground until it stopped. We arrived at the safe side after making it through. A stream of wardens cordoned the area, some holding batons and a shield while others grasped rifles.

An aura of discipline and order surrounded them as they uniformly grouped the crowd. Hushed discussions occurred around us as the safe feeling around them aroused their curiosity. An intriguing discussion happened right behind us.

"Bro, this ain't the first time terrorists attacked. There were smaller explosions near the elevators a few days ago. The audacity!"

"I heard it's from a few Zaunite gangs, not Noxus not Shuriman."

"Pffft ha, you believe that? Any problem can have its problems found in Zaun."

"I, for one believe it. But who uses colored gas in their bombs? Blue and pink, blue and pink..."

Soon, it was our turn. A hand squeezed my heart as we were escorted. We got sat down near a chubby dy with a kind smile. This may be the person all the kids got sent to. The smile looked forced to me, with cold, calcutive emotions behind it. She waved her hand at me, as I was separated from Ezreal and Anna.

"It's okay dearies. We're just going to ask a few simple questions."

The weedily noise of her talking got smaller as I was brought to a more secluded location. At the end, I was shoved through the door.

A cold faced woman faced me, wearing full gear and rifle beside the chair. Dark blue hair underneath a white beret. That was my first impression. Immediately after getting in, she spoke.

"Name?""Aerth.""Where are you from?""Demacia.""Why are you in Piltover?""I'm a mage."

She stood up, seemingly done with her paper.

  "Sit."

Now I'm sitting and she's standing. There wasn't a backrest so it's a stool. A subtle wobbliness from mismatched legs didn't faze me at all. She paced around the room.

  "Demonstrate your magic for me."

I bent down as she tensed up. I cleanly grabbed a handful of the ground and lifted it. She nodded slowly.

"I can only use it on my hands, and nothing else. Those mageseeker pricks think I'm going to do something like dig a tunnel and colpse the city or something."

I shrugged, while hoping with all my heart that my small lie wouldn't be exposed. She nodded, before scribbling down some words onto the paper. The interrogation continued, however with less bite.

"How did you get to Piltover?"

"I walked, then I met Annabelle and we went by ship at Stonewall."

"Is that so... that girl is Annabelle I presume? If everything matches up we'll let you go. I recommend going to learn about Piltover from one of the museums around here."

"I just done that in the morning, we were going to get lunch when this happened."

We just sat there, ignoring each other. The awkward silence was broken by another warden walking in.

  "So I'm free to go?"

They whispered and pointed at the paper.

  "You're okay to go now."

  I nodded, before walking out.

  "Finally out big guy?"

  "Yeah..."

  "Let's eat somewhere I know."
