Chapter 11

Miri moved slowly towards the inner depths of the catacombs. While she recognized the general appearance of this particular area, she didn’t recognize the specific layout of it. Perhaps the layout had been changed between the game version and the isekai version. That was somewhat to be expected. If the city layout were different between the two versions, why wouldn’t the layout of the dungeons be different? She’d expected that this wouldn’t be the last time she’s going to encounter these types of differences.

Even though she could easily run past the dungeon in a matter of minutes, she’d prefer to keep a slow and steady pace as she suspected that there’s likely going to be traps all around and she didn’t want to trigger any of them with her hurried pace. While continuing to wander through the catacombs, quiet except for the faint sound of her footsteps, she suddenly heard a strange sound in the far distance behind her. A mild clattering of hard objects and the shuffling of heavy, trudging footsteps from the sound of it—one that seemed to be slowly approaching closer and closer to her.

Because of the darkness of the area, which even the light of the surrounding candles and the torches had a hard time illuminating, Miri had a difficult time actually seeing what’s causing the sound. However, based on her experience, she had a fairly good idea of what they might be: wights, reanimated corpses of the restless dead and a common encounter within dungeons such as these.

Using a trick she had learned before, she fired a single Starlight Bolt through the middle of the darkness where the sound was coming from. Due to the brightness of the magical projectile, it was able to illuminate the dark path right as it flew, providing her with just a brief glimpse of the incoming enemies.

As she suspected, what she saw within that brief passing moment of brightness were indeed wights—about 3 or 4 of them, all moving towards her with a zombie-like pace. Their appearances were more or less like you’d expect from your typical fantasy undead enemies—grey, taut flesh, blank, white eyes, armor and weapons rotted from years of disuse, the noise coming out of their mouths being nothing more than senseless moans and grunts.

As the wights approached closer, the lights from the candles and torches were able to reveal their true appearance. Miri could make out about two wight walkers, a wight axeman, and a wight bowman. Out of all the wights, the walkers were the least threatening but also the most plentiful—aiming to simply overwhelm their enemies with sheer numbers. Due to Miri’s playstyle, she couldn’t allow herself to be overwhelmed up close. Best to take care of the most immediate threat first.

Unleashing a Crescent Arc, she simultaneously damaged and pushed the two wight walkers back into the axeman and bowman behind them. This positioned all the wights into one tightly-knit group, just the way she intended so she could follow it up with her next spell.

After channeling a large amount of mana, she casted Meteor Impact onto that pile of wights, causing a purple magic circle to appear on top of them—one which summoned a large, rocky meteor that crashed onto them, impacting with a powerful explosion. At the end of that spell, all four of the wights were defeated, blasted into nothing but a pile of dismembered undead body parts.

“Haha! Yes!” Miri cheered with a fist pump.

However, the danger was far from over as she could hear more sounds of wights approaching closer. The Meteor Impact spell, while powerful, must have alerted the other wights to her location. She must move quickly if she were to avoid them ganging up on her.
