Chapter 29: Panicked Bureaucrats

“Once again, there are CONSEQUENCES for a false report.” The brunette mage warned sternly, eyes blinking rapidly in confusion as she skimmed through their statement.

“Yes yes, just get on with it.” Aurelius retorted, cold sweat trickling down his face.

With narrowing eyes and thinning lips, the commission mage tensed up as she picked up the stamp from her desk. With a small thud, she slammed the charm down on the notary document, next to Aurelius’s signature.

The paper reacted to the action, with the stamped area emitting a thin golden glow. The glow produced thin strands of light that wrapped itself about the words of the report.

The glowing threads soon finished binding the words, and the whole paper glowed a light golden. To the bureaucrat's absolute shock, the threads shattered, and the glow disappeared, verifying the truthfulness of the statement.

“Well fuck, there goes my day down the shitter.” She cursed, hurriedly picking up her magi-phone and pressing a button on her dial.

  ???

The “processing room” was rather small, with semi-comfortable sofas, a walnut coffee table and noticeable lack of decorations.

A man sat across from the unnerved duo, hands in his face, with an expression approaching the verge of tears.

He was Warden White, a mid-ranking commission bureaucrat, and the division secretary for magical crimes in Tlacualtzin.

He was usually rather composed when it came to his job, with a cool head and sense of impeccable humour that had allowed him to rise through the ranks in the commission with ease.

However, the news that his desk officer had brought him today had been devastating, shattering his fine day into smithereens.

“Do you know how insane the story you’ve just told us is?” He asked, his question muffling out through his hands.

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

“Can you at least consent to a mind magic examination and make my life a little easier?” He continued, desperately grasping at straws.

“Absolutely not! I’m only reporting an incident to you! I know my rights!” Aurelius exclaimed haughtily.

“We’ll see about that…” Mr. Warden thought to himself.

He had decided to attempt to coax out more information from the two unwanted visitors as he waited for the upper echelons of the commission to come up with a sensible plan of action. He had no place in a meeting involving a Greenwich lich after all.

He was, however, in a rather depressive mood, quite understandably so given that he was reasonably sure that a demotion or termination was due for his sorry behind after today.

He had allowed a lich to operate in a SCHOOL! In HIS CITY! The higher ups were absolutely going to have HIS HEAD!

While he held out thin shreds of hope that there was TRICKERY AFOOT, it seemed rather unlikely after further verification with more reliable binding magics.

It was improbable that anyone would take a sophisticated method to screw with just some academy students’ mind, and it was highly unlikely for a binding-breaker to be undetected by her specialist division officers.

He leaned forward in his chair, thinking about his current savings (or lack there of) as well as wondering where he would get his next job.

The door opened just then, revealing a fearsome figure.

“Well, it’s a legitimate report. We cross verified with both the commission diviners we had available as well as our Caelestis contratees.” She proclaimed.

The woman was huge, both in stature and height. She was easily 2 meters tall, and her bulging muscles were strained against her ill-fitting commission uniforms.

She was Yvette Yeltz, a superior to Warden White, and one of the Sages in charge of the Aethernalis kingdom. She was an insane user of magic, merely a rank below the 10 Arch Sages.

Sagehood was almost unattainable, with perhaps one in a million mages of the world even possessing the aptitude for such heights.

Even the 12 Magical Families possessed merely an approximate 60 individuals who attained sagehood.

Standing with a serious demeanour almost as if war was just around the corner, the woman continued with gravity,

“You don’t have to be too concerned about your job White. We’ve confirmed serious mind magic in use around the Academy. It had traces of Fae magic.”

Warden White perked up at this suggestion, his eyes brightening up considerably.

“An absolute insult to humanity. To crawl into our territory and prance around like a bunch of no-good cunts.”

“And they bring in a fucking Greenwich along with their disgusting filth.” She spat, her visage darkening considerably.

Aurelius and Tiberius sat silently, slightly stunned by the colourful language that followed from the mouth of the esteemed sage.

She was a figure of respect and authority within the city, with her even coming to the Academy to give guest lectures on magic on occasion.

However, while this may have been the first time for them to have been in such proximity to an impressive figure such as her, it was also quite unique to have their ears prodded with… explicit language by the sage.

“Cough… Yes, anyway, she’s coming to get involved in this White.”

Warden White balked at this statement, at a loss for words.

“Are-Fuck-Damn.” Was all he could muster.

“It’s a lich hunt, my friend.” Sighed the sage.
