Chapter 35: Pineal Gland

The AI then sits on the couch next to Bexy, and even though it is digital, Bexy moves over to make some room for it.

“Now, I heard what has happened to you this past three weeks,” says the AI, lacing his fingers and leaning forward. “So I would like to check your mind to be sure that there is nothing serious with you, is that okay?”

Lee nods. “Yes, that is fine. What do I need to do?” Lee asks, looking at the AI as if he really is in the room with them; his parents alongside Bexy look at the hologram.

“It is easy; we will just talk, and I will use the glasses to examine your head. The glasses are a mix of the helmet and advanced smart glasses on the market,” says the AI, pointing at the glasses that Lee is wearing.

“Okay, as long as these ones are not going to explode,” says Lee, joking.

The AI smiles. “No, they won’t explode. Now let’s start with something simple,” it says and becomes serious. “Your parents say you understand Portuguese; is that true?”

Lee looks at the AI and says, “Yes, I do understand. I just do not know how, but I can understand it; it just comes automatically.” Then Lee notices that on his phone's hologram there are some Japanese subtitles showing what he just said.

The AI, noticing Lee looking at the subtitles, says in Japanese, “I asked you the question in Portuguese, and you replied, without thinking, in Portuguese too, and let me tell you, you sounded like someone original from Portugal, but somehow your vocabulary is a bit…” the AI starts to think of the best word. “I want to say outdated, but it is not the right one because people do still speak like that, but not the youth.”

“So it is too formal and grammatically correct?” asks Lee.

“Yes, that is correct,” says the AI. “But there is more; something that is making my programming glitch, the thing is that your brain doesn't show any signs of memory of you having learned the language. There is no information about the language; here, I will show you. This is the image of your brain when you speak Japanese.” The AI grabs his own phone and a hologram of Lee’s brain shows up, and a part of it gets highlighted when Lee speaks. “These are the areas for memory and speech; now, this is when you were speaking Portuguese.” The AI points to the different areas, labelling them, then when he shows the images of Lee’s brain when speaking Portuguese, only the speech area gets highlighted.

Lee reaches into the hologram of his brain and pulls it closer, the image running on a loop. He then tugs at the image and it expands; he then rotates it, so it’s as if he is looking at someone's face. “What is this area here? It is glowing, too.”

The AI looks at Lee then at the image. “That is your pineal gland; it is like the main instructor for the brain.”

Hearing the name, a few memories of information about it surface in Lee’s mind. “I know; it is what controls the brain, regulates sleep, and it is also like an inner clock. If the brain can be classified as the hard drive of the human body, the pineal gland would be the processor.”

The AI starts to tap on his phone, a look of shock on its face. “Lee, this is the image of your brain just now at the mention of the pineal gland.” As the image plays, it shows Lee's pineal gland glow like iron left in the fire, then the glow explodes like fireworks and goes into the whole brain, highlighting the different areas of the brain in a chain reaction. “All this was in slightly over a second; a second has nine hundred ninety-nine milliseconds, and this you saw was in one thousand and six milliseconds.” Hearing this, the Watsons and Bexy look at Lee in pure shock. The AI then plays the image at its normal speed, and it just looks like Lee’s brain blinked.

“How can a human child's brain think that fast?” Bexy asks, then on his phone he plays a hologram. “This is the image of my brain when I was thinking very fast, and even so, it is not as fast as that.” In the image, visible parts of the brain highlight fast and lights run from one area of the brain to the other.

“That is not the most amazing thing,” says the AI. “Lee’s whole brain got highlighted at once. I didn't know it was possible for that to happen on a living being. I only logged something similar when someone was dying, but even so, their memory cortex was the one sending the signals, not the pineal gland like Lee’s just did.”

“Lee honey, how did you know about the pineal gland functions?” asks Sue.

Lee shrugs. “I don't know, I just know… before Doctor AI told me the name, I didn't know what it was.”

“Lee is very special,” says the AI. “The best thing to do is have him enrol on a Portuguese class to mask the reason why he speaks Portuguese, that and with any other language he might have access to. Otherwise, someone might try to take him away for experiments.”

Sue and Kenji look at one another, then Sue asks, “With the language it is easy to hide; what about the other skills? Like the bow.”

The AI starts to scratch his chin as he looks at Lee. Finally, he utters, “Lee, can you remember how to make the bows?”

Lee nods. “Yes, there are a few ways depending on the wood,” he says instantly. “Some wood needs to be placed in water or over fire to help bend it better.”

The AI nods in understanding, but then he shakes his head. “I understand what you mean, and I have accessed the internet and you are right, but scanning your brain, I can't see any indication of memory.”

Lee looks down with a frown, then looks up at the AI. “What about dreams?” The AI shows a confused expression, so Lee continues. “Sometimes I get dreams that show me how to do things, and when I try to remember them, it is easier. Like last night, I went to bed after looking at how to turn a beast stone into jewellery, then at night I only dreamed of different ways on how to craft it.”

The AI stands up, pointing at Lee. “There; now your brain showed activity on the memory cortex.” The AI shows the recordings of Lee’s brain; on it, an area gets highlighted, then dims only to get brighter. “Just as it dimmed, it was when Lee mentioned about doing the research; then his pineal gland got very active and the memory cortex got even brighter. So Lee is remembering something on the subconscious level, and his mind in order to protect itself only gives him the information during his sleep.”

After concluding the testing of the glasses, Bexy joins the Watsons for dinner; as he is leaving, Lee tries to give the glasses back but Bexy refuses, saying that they are for Lee as a thank you for helping test their capacity. Unbeknownst to anyone, when the AI returned to Bexy’s phone, he left a dormant copy of himself in Lee’s phone.
