Chapter 34: Bexy’s Glasses

After taking the shower, Lee heads back downstairs and is taken aback to find Master Bexy.

“Good afternoon, Master Bexy,” says Lee with a slight bow.

Bexy looks at Lee. “Hello, Lee, nice to see you again.”

“Lee, come here,” says Sue, making some space for Lee to sit between her and Kenji. “We called Master Bexy because we are worried about you.”

Lee looks around at the three adults then back at his mum. “About what?”

“About you knowing things you are not supposed to know,” says Kenji. “You made that bow and arrows, you can understand Portuguese; we never have taught you and the school will only teach another languages next year.” Kenji takes a deep breath. “Not to mention, you are much smarter and more mature than before you went into a coma.”

“But I thought being smart and mature was a good thing,” says Lee, confused.

“Normally it is, Lee,” says Bexy, leaning forward. “But you became it too fast; your parents are afraid that something could have happened when the first test went wrong.” Bexy then reaches into a bag beside him and takes a small box. “This is my last invention. It is nothing new, but I have perfected it with the help of the Dr AI.” Once Bexy opens the box, Lee finds a pair of glasses.

Bexy extends the glasses towards Lee and he takes them from the box to look at them better. “Are they smart glasses?” Lee asks, looking at Bexy after having seen the sensors on the side.

“That is correct. Why don’t you try them on?” asks Bexy.

Something in Lee’s subconscious flickers and his muscles tense up; Lee places the glasses back on the box, his instincts of fight or flight kicking in. “Why? What is so special about these glasses?”

“Lee, it is for your safety, we want…” Kenji starts to speak but is unable because Bexy interjects.

“Don’t do that,” says Bexy. “Lee is no child. Well, he is a child but not in his mind, so it is better if you just tell the truth.” Bexy looks at Sue and Kenji then, lowering their heads, they nod. “If you wish, I can speak and explain.” Bexy adds.

“That won’t be necessary,” says Sue with a shake of her head. Then she turns to look at Lee. “Son, we think that when the first test helmet broke, some information was downloaded into your head, just like downloading a file into a computer. So we are just afraid that that information can be dangerous, like the way you knew how to clean and prepare the rabbits; that was an almost forgotten technique from the nineteen-nineties.”

Lee lowers his gaze and thinks to himself. “But that was the most simple thing; if they scan my head, will the rest of the things I have hidden come out?” Then he reaches and takes the glasses, then looking at Sue he smiles. “You are afraid that a virus got downloaded with the information. So I will test the glasses.”

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Lee places the glasses on then Bexy turns them on; Lee sees a logo rotating and a bar loading. Shortly after, Lee gets a welcome message.

“Now Lee, your parents said you have your own phone now, is that right?” asks Bexy and Lee nods, then taking the phone from his back pocket he shows it to Bexy. “Good, that phone will do. May I?” Bexy asks for the phone. Lee nods and unlocks the phone.

Bexy opens the settings and connects to the glasses via Bluetooth, then on the glasses Lee gets an interface showing labels on things around him, and on the top right corner Lee notices a button. As Lee looks around the room, things keep getting labels, so Lee just extends his index and middle finger together and makes a swatting gesture and the labels are gone.

Bexy noticing this asks. “What happened, what did you see, Lee?”

Lee looks at Bexy. “It was just some labels on everything I was looking at; it was annoying me.”

“What?” Bexy says and looks at the hologram coming from Lee’s phone. “But there is no information on it yet.” When Lee looks at the hologram, he notices a message on it saying ‘loading information.’ “You are supposed to be seeing this on the glasses,” says Bexy pointing at the hologram.

Lee grabs the phone, then in instinct he waves his hand over the hologram. Then, as he rotates his wrist, he snaps his fingers and the image of the glasses appears rotating on the hologram; as they rotate, it starts to zoom in almost like if someone is putting them on, and then the hologram shows what Lee is watching through the glasses. “Done,” says Lee placing the phone back on top of the coffee table.

Bexy looks at Lee then at the phone, and again at Lee. “Are you psychic too? How did you know when the program was about to load?” Lee shrugs. So Bexy continues. “Now that you managed to get the labels off, can you get them on again?”

Bexy is about to continue explaining but Lee, looking at his phone, holds his index and middle finger over the phone and thinks ‘information’ at the same time he jerks the fingers upwards.

As Lee finishes with the gesture, a label with the phone's description is visible, then as Lee looks at something else, only that thing gets an information label of what it is.

“That was very good; how did you know how to get the information?” asks Bexy, as for Sue and Kenji just look confused, not sure if what Lee is doing is normal or not.

Lee shrugs. “When I waved the labels away, it looked like they went inside the objects, so now I just thought about pulling the information off the object I am looking at.”

“Okay, that was a smart move,” says Bexy, but it sounds like it is more to himself. “Now, I would like you to go into the menu and press, ‘call AI’.” As Bexy explains showing on the phone's hologram, Lee follows along.

As Lee selects ‘Call AI’, a message says ‘No compatible AI found’. “It’s not working, Master Bexy.”

“Why not? When I tested the glasses software, the AI doctor came up on the glasses,” says Bexy, the lights on his head flashing fast.

“Did you have the glasses connected to your phone?” Lee asks Bexy and the latter nods in confirmation. “That explains it. The AI you called was the one from your phone; I only have a simple AI assistant on my phone.”

“So if I send the AI to your phone...” Bexy opens his phone, and the AI of Dr Robert Winston appears straight away, so Bexy speaks to it. “Hello, Lee can't access you as you are on my phone and the glasses are pair to his phone.”

The AI facepalms and shakes his head. “How can such advanced beings be so dumb? That is an obvious outcome; why did it take so long for you to know that?” The AI says, leaving Bexy speechless. Then the AI gets his own phone and starts to tap on it, then in seconds Lee’s phone starts to beep like a knock.

On the glasses, Lee gets a message. ‘Dr AI R.W. is trying to communicate.” Then there are two buttons, one with ‘OK’ the other with ‘Ignore’. After selecting okay, Lee sees a life-size door appear on the glasses display, and the AI steps into the room.

“Hello, Lee, how are you doing?” says the AI, greeting Lee.

Lee smiles. “Hello, Doctor AI. I am doing fine.”
