Chapter 6 - Magic (intermission)

I rush over to Ian by the tree, leaving the sword behind without a thought. I shake Ian, "Ian! You still with me?" He groans, but does not open his eyes or verbally respond. [Life signs: Fading. Administer emergency first aid quickly or end his suffering]. "End his suffering? I swear to god I would hit you if I could... But I also need your help. Please, I need to save my friend." [...] [Granting reward from last quest: Single Use Health Potion. Tip: Pour half on his wounds to heal external damage, and the other half in his mouth to heal internal damage.] A plastic bottle filled with a pink liquid appears into my hand. "I do not know if I trust this, but I have no other choice..."

I quickly pour half of it into his mouth, and the other half onto his broken and mutilated limbs. I watch, as the pink liquid solidifies, likes tentacles, and starts pulling his body back into proper shape, with snaps and cracks as the damaged bones are broken, untwisted, and reformed. Ian screams in pain as the process happens, making me panic, but my panic has no place here as there is no way to back out now. Instead, I squeeze his good hand, as I watch the damaged limbs, now in the proper place, start healing from the inside. "Please Ian, stay with me." Finally, his limbs heal all the way to the skin, as I watch the skin seal and blood on his skin evaporate, leaving the only evidence of his injuries lie in his damaged and bloody clothes. [Restoration complete.]

I collapse in relief onto my back, letting go of Ian. "Thank you, but if you ever suggest ending his suffering again, I will end you instead.." Ignoring my statement, the screen pops up with a suggestion, [User is exhausted, and suffering from minor internal and external wounds. It would be in your best interest to take the other potion]. "Screw you, I cannot take the risk of taking the last one. It seems potent, and it would be a waste to use it for minor wounds." [Suit yourself].

I hear movement next to me and I sit up to meet Ian who has also begun sitting up. "Ian!" I exclaim as I hug him. He looks at his now intact hands and feet and his bloody and damaged clothes. "What happened? I felt this wave of pain, but now it feels and seems like nothing ever happened," Ian asks. "Do not worry about it. All that matters is you are okay now! How are you feeling?" "Like I got a great night's rest. But what happened here, did somebody kill that thing?" he asks as he points at the decapitated ogre leader. I stand up, my body sore and tired, but up nonetheless. "I did but that is a story for another time. We need to get out of here. It is not safe."

The Atlas argues with a new screen popping up, [Remaining Ogres are scattered after the death of the leader but still present nearby. Proceed with confidence and caution. Tip: Monster corpses are rich with valuable resources.] My ears perk up and fingers twitch. That idea, of monster corpses as resources, felt both familiar and comforting. I shake that feeling away and grab Ian and walk towards the ogre body. "Give me a minute. I need to find my sword."

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

[Retrieving Unique Sword.] "What?" Suddenly, I hear movement nearby, and I find an object flying towards me. I instinctively, reach my hand out and catch it. I find it to be the sword I slayed the ogre leader with. "How did this move on its own? No, better question, how did I catch that like it was the most natural thing?" Ian looks at me confused after watching me catch the blade and ask these questions aloud.

Ian shakes his head, and instead asks a different question, "What now? Why did you bring us to this body? And do you plan on holding that sword in your hand forever?" I ponder his questions but the Atlas answers one of them for me. [Generating compatible scabbard. Tip: If needed, the user's inventory can be used to store whatever items the user desires.] Suddenly, a black full coverage scabbard with white accents, and a strap, appears in my free hand. I wrap it around my back to allow me to draw and wield the blade with my right hand, and I pull the scabbard tight. I laugh to myself, "All that swordsmanship I guess did pay off."

Ian quietly follows and watches as I take my sword, and slice into the ogre. The Atlas seems to kick in like it was born for this, and I reach in and grab a large blue crystal, as the Atlas stores various parts of the ogre it deems useful.

Ian and I both look at the crystal with wide eyes as I move it and analyze its every detail. Ian finally speaks up, "What is it? And how did you know where to find it?" I shake my head, not knowing the answers to either of those questions. Atlas speaks up, filling my mind with new information, [Identified: Large Quantum Crystal. Quantum Crystals, also known as Specialized Mana Stones, are available in boss monsters, granting increased power and abilities to them. Humans can use them to evolve or craft various items.] A loud alarm blares in my head. [Error: Arthur Rivers Canes is unable to absorb Mana Stones. No solution available at this time.]

I glance at Ian, his face unchanging, proving he does not seem to hear or see the Atlas as I do. I pause as I digest all this information. Yet for some reason, I do not feel an anger from being left, but instead a calmness and understanding. I repeat to Ian while ignoring his earlier questions, "It is a Specialized Mana Stone. All monsters, have some type of stone in them. Here, catch." I toss the mana stone to Ian, and as it touches his hand, it shines with a bright light, then splits into tiny orbs of light that fly into Ian. "Arthur! What is going on?!" "Ian, stay calm. It is completely safe."

As the last particle enters him, a blue screen appears in front of him, which seems familiar to me, with an appearance similar to the screens from the Atlas, but I do not see any words. Ian mumbles to himself as if reading said screen. His eyes light up with confusion and excitement simultaneously. My familiar red screen appears to me. [Congratulations, human Ian has evolved into an Awakened!]

Ian gulps and hesitantly says, "Arthur, please step back. I have something I want to show you..."
