Chapter 3 - The Escape

A chance? To kill that thing? But how? I don't even know if that thing can die. Obviously, the red screen hasn't lied yet or I'd be dead already, but how would someone even kill something like that. The creature is massive, it must weigh a ton, and it is crazy fast. Who is to say normal weapons would even work on something like that? Not to mention, it would probably see whatever I tried with those disgusting beady spider eyes.

I sigh. "This is rigged." The screen pops up on my right and I take a glance. [Time remaining: 7 minutes and 2 seconds]. "I should just wait this out, it's almost done anyways. This bush is the safest place for me it seems.

The screen disappears, revealing the gorgeous blue ocean, with crashing waves and- wait. The ocean. The cliff. The massive creature. I almost laugh out loud at my own stupidity but I cover my mouth before I do. "You lovely red screen. You want me to make it out of here, and not just by surviving. You practically spelled it out for me."

I look closely at the cliff edge. One good dodge, with the monster at a decent angle, and it should go tumbling off. But how will I manage this?

I shake such useless thoughts away and stand up. I slowly look around, and the monster isn't anywhere nearby. I start running towards the cliff, stopping just a couple feet short.

"I feel like I am going to get myself killed, but at least that way I would not have to do another boring philosophy lecture." I steady myself, and harden my resolve like steel. I take a deep breath in.

"HEY UGLY. I'M OVER HERE!" I scream at the top of my lungs. Suddenly I feel a violent vibration in the ground. A large screech follows as a wall comes crashing down. Another screech follows.

[Automatic translation: Ugly? My mother gave me this face!]. "Are you shitting me? You have to be pulling my leg now. There is no way that was real?" I sigh, "No more translations. I feel like I'm talking to a child." The screen disappears, and the beast starts charging at me. I crouch down and yell, "An elderly snail could go faster than that!" [Hypocrite]. I roll my eyes. The Chimera increases its pace, shaking the ground with its thundering steps, as my ears are ringing from its very upset screeching.

As it nears, I jump out of the way, clearing it.

Or at least I thought that what was going to happen, because as I attempt to dodge, my leg cramps, screwing me up, and its long mantis arms easily snags my shirt, and I get launched into the ocean, far from the beast as it screeches to its miserable death.

  SPLASH.

As I fly through the air, I barely see it, but the beast is sinking, and drowning. Finally I hit the ocean like concrete.

  BANG

Really? It gets a splash and I get a bang? This place is against me...

Barely a moment to think that as my consciousness begins to fade to black. Pain soars in my shattered limbs, and red begins to spill out, as I sink beneath the peaceful waves.

  [...]

[Chimera successfully defeated. Leaving mental plane.]

Just after everything faded to black, I gasp to life on top of Professor Zalkost's desk. My vision blurry, but returning, I look at my previously shattered limbs. Perfectly intact. I feel my face and find the same thing. I'm fine. My clothes aren't though.

I get up off the desk in my soaked and salty smelling clothes and take in my environment.

"Somebody help me!" I hear someone cry out. And then I hear a lot more of the same cries. People crying for help, screaming and slamming into things, and lots of loud bangs.

The system floods information into my mind in a second.

[Welcome, Arthur! Tutorial Quest Complete! You have been returned to: Earth. This was your previous location before being transported for the tutorial.]

[Congratulations! You are the first entity to defeat a Chimera! Rewards dispensed. Rewards: (Class Advancement: "Shepard". Hero's Starter Kit. Teleportation: Already Complete. ) Bonus Rewards: Atlas System Interface]

  Atlas System?

[Menu]. The familiar red screen changes, responding to my question, showing me tons of options, from stats, to languages, to inventory. A dozen different menus but I don't care about any of them. All I know is that the system has a name, and it seems it intentionally helped me. I'll worry about it later.

The screen vanishes and I notice holes in the walls and ceiling. Lots of cracks. And... Blood. Blood is everywhere. The smell of iron is thick, making my heart race, and there are severely damaged objects and mutilated body parts everywhere. The screams around me are growing fainter and more distant by the minute.

"What the hell happened here?" [Answer: The eradication of humanity has started. Last Hope Protocol already initiated.] The screen disappears then a new one takes its place.

[New Quest: Find and save human: Ian. Status: Injured. Reward: Single Use Health Potion. Good luck, Arthur.]

The Atlas screen vanishes, and in its place is a new concern welling up within my throat along with a single question. "Where is Ian?!"
