Chapter 28: The Return Journey

Kallen asked: "So according to what you're saying, Rulu, this Prince Su Wen, after coming here to be governor, won't have the same ability to live long as he did in Sanctuary?"

"That's right." Rulu's face showed an evil smile as he said, "Generally, it's quite rare for a Sanctuary prince to serve as governor. The Emperor probably has some important task for him. If he can't accomplish what the Emperor has instructed, he can forget about returning to Sanctuary. He'll have to age like a normal person and eventually die here, hehehe..."

A-Bing clapped his hands happily and exclaimed: "Hahaha, so this Prince Su Wen coming here to be governor is actually a great misfortune for him, equivalent to being exiled from Sanctuary."

Rulu said: "Yes, Sanctuary's land area is limited, and the lifespan of people living there is extremely long. To maintain the survival of Sanctuary's native population, they must clear out another portion of people. The struggles within Sanctuary are very cruel. Even royal family members can be marginalized, suppressed, persecuted, or even assassinated."

At this point, Rulu seemed to recall something unpleasant. He frowned, his eyes showing a gleam of hatred, and his expression turned cold.

Kallen said with great surprise: "This is the first time I've heard of these things. Rulu, you're really knowledgeable about these matters, as if you've been in Sanctuary before. How do you know all this? Could it be that you were once from Sanctuary?!"

"No... nothing like that." Rulu's expression changed slightly, and he quickly explained, "Actually, I've been studying at a school created by Sanctuary, specifically established to cultivate talent for Sanctuary. They taught a lot about Sanctuary, which is why I know so much about these things."

"I see." Kallen didn't doubt Rulu's words. She wanted to ask more about Sanctuary, but Rulu said Nana was still sick, and he needed to focus his attention on her. Not wanting to affect Nana's condition, Kallen stopped pressing him with questions.

After a while, Captain Guan returned, informing Rulu that everything he requested was ready. Rulu then told Captain Guan about his plan to take Nana back to the concession area for treatment.

Captain Guan immediately objected, saying it was too dangerous, but Rulu insisted this was the only way to save Nana. He assured that he had the ability to protect himself and Nana. Although Captain Guan felt Rulu's proposal was too risky, he had no way to help Nana, and he knew Rulu was very intelligent and capable. Since Rulu was so confident, Captain Guan could only let him try and agreed to Rulu's plan.

Afterward, Rulu changed into a different set of clothes, and Kallen helped Nana change as well. Rulu and Nana put on hats and decorative glasses, then applied special makeup to gray their faces. After this disguise, the two looked very different from before, appearing about ten years older.

"Nana, hang in there a little longer. Your illness will get better soon." Rulu sat in the driver's seat of the white small car prepared by Captain Guan, looking at Nana beside him who had woken up, and speaking gently.

Nana made an effort to keep her eyes open, nodded at Rulu, and said in a weak voice: "I know. I'll try not to cause trouble for you, Rulu."

Rulu then looked at Captain Guan and the others outside the car and said: "That's it then, Captain Guan. Nana and I will go now. You don't need to see us off."

Captain Guan stood by the car window, bent down, and looked at Rulu and Nana in the car with concern, saying: "Take care of yourselves. If you encounter any trouble, use the contact information I gave you to find me. I'll do my best to help you then."

Rulu said: "Thanks. After I return to the concession area, I'll visit you again if possible."

"Then go. I won't delay you anymore. Safe travels."

Rulu nodded at Captain Guan, started the car, and headed toward the concession area along the dilapidated road.

As he drove, Rulu observed both sides of the road. Along the way, he saw rundown houses, with poorly dressed people scattered along the roadside. Some people were sleeping directly on the streets, some scantily clad women were flaunting themselves to attract customers, some were drunkenly fighting in the streets, and some were even robbing others with metal knives.

As Rulu had imagined, the area outside the concession was very chaotic, without any legal constraints. After all, the Huaxia Nation's system had collapsed during the war with Sanctuary, and many places were in a state of anarchy. Currently, the most stable and prosperous areas in the Huaxia Nation were only the concession areas under Sanctuary's control.

As they approached the concession area, the buildings became more densely packed, and there were more pedestrians on the road. At the same time, Sanctuary's armored troopers and regular soldiers appeared in Rulu's line of sight, immediately alerting him. Rulu quickly lowered the brim of his hat and adjusted his decorative glasses to avoid being recognized by Sanctuary's military.

Suddenly, a purple armored trooper came to the front of Rulu's white small car, blocking its path. At the same time, a middle-aged male soldier in a gray uniform approached the car window.

"Where are you two from and where are you going?!" The soldier scrutinized Rulu and Nana in the car with vigilant eyes. Because Rulu and Nana's disguises were quite strange, his gaze remained fixed on them.

"Officer, it's like this," Rulu said with a friendly smile to the soldier. "My sister and I went to the countryside a few days ago to visit relatives. My sister suddenly fell ill during the trip, so we're now rushing back to the concession area."

"Visiting relatives at a time like this? Don't you know there are rebel organizations active in this area in recent days?" The soldier's face showed suspicion as he spoke with a heavier tone.

Rulu said: "Yes, I've heard about that, but we're just ordinary citizens. The rebels shouldn't bother us, right?"

"Enough with the nonsense." The soldier took out his handgun and commanded Rulu: "Both of you get out of the car right now. Take off your hats, glasses, and whatever else, and show me your identification. If you don't cooperate, I'll treat you as rebels. Understand?!"
