Chapter 83 – The Third Mission

We returned to the castle the following day with the legendary Tome in tow. I would've liked to believe otherwise, but the Lord of the Land was somewhat apprehensive. I guess that confirms it, then, I thought to myself as I stood before the throne room. Isis, Tamara, Cassandra, and the other Apostles were present, so I thought it wise to keep my conclusion to myself as I was briefed the details for the next mission.

"You have performed spectacurly," Isis began, acting as Lord Behemoth's spokesperson. I filtered out all the unimportant stuff, focusing rather on the main goal, which was to protect a noble from the Kingdom of Betrunia from being assassinated without alerting his political enemies of our existence. So that meant... "Quiet murders. No survivors," she expined succinctly.

Okay, seems easy enough, I thought to myself a little too early because what she said next threw me for a loop, "Daphne, you are to do this mission on your own." Huh? "We'll be assessing your ability to handle missions solo from now on, so this is just the beginning," She expined with a smile that was anything but angelic. The executives must not be happy with my performance, the thought crossed my mind as I gnced at Lord Behemoth sitting elegantly on his throne.

"You have three days to prepare, so I'd recommend re-familiarizing yourself with your skills," Tamara chimed in with a kind smile. Good idea, I thought to myself as the briefing concluded. On my way back to the byrinth, Lucia stopped by to expin the mission she was given, as we each had our individual briefings, mine ending as soon as hers began.

"Keeping the peace between a tribe of warring dragons? That sounds awesome!" I excimed as soon as she'd finished.

"No, it doesn't!" She protested. "There's far more politics involved than I'm comfortable with!" She compined.

"Then, you should consider it as training for the time you'll be stepping up as the leader of our new Theocracy!" I tried to encourage her, but she only pouted her cheeks and harrumphed before going to prepare for her own mission. So cute, I thought to myself before shortly arriving at my destination.

The byrinth was as confusing as ever, but through Tamara's guidance, I'd learned to navigate it and was quite confident in my ability to not get lost anymore. Take a turn left and then a right before... Here we are! I rejoiced internally as I sat down cross-legged at my favorite spot, the same pce where I first engaged the [Recssing] skill. The pain was always the worst part, but I'd have to bear with it to recss into my st main pick: The Assassin.

"Understand your enemy, Dougs." I remembered my uncle's visage at that very moment. It was a lesson I'd learned from him that served me well in both of my lives and at that very moment, I was quite keen on doing just that, so I engaged the skill, only to be assaulted by the usual pain. Looking through the css list, I quickly found the css I wanted, and the familiar message popped up.

  Change Css?

  Yes!

And with that, a new stat screen appeared before me:

  DaphneLV 100HP896 + 40%Str605 + 40%Dex750 + 40%Spd736 + 40%Luck 688 + 40% P-DEF402 + 40%M-DEF431 + 40%Status-----CompatibilityLucia

Skills:Sensor, Killing Intuition, Killing Strike, Nature's Bounty, Recssing

Not bad. Like the Swordmaster, the Assassin's stats were skewed towards dexterity and speed while the other stats were still okayish, but that wasn't my main focus. Sensor? Intuitively, the mystery of the new skill began to unravel. It basically gave Assassins the ability to sense the presence of life in their immediate surroundings.

Hmm, that could really come in handy, I thought to myself with a devious smile as I started tweaking it with [Recssing], not forgetting the words of my predecessor, "Those two are more conniving than anyone I know in this world..." I don't know how he got to that level of power, but one thing is clear... I'm being monitored. It was an uncomfortable thought and one I wouldn't dare to think before mind readers like them, but it also begged the question: If Lord Behemoth is one of them, who is the other one?
