Chapter 5: A seat on the council.
“Did I just hear him say put your pants on?” Sean asked.
“Uh, yeah.” Daniel replied.
“What the hell are those two doing?”
“I really don’t know,” Daniel said, putting his phone back into his pocket. “But it does sound like the blood was tainted and that’s what caused the royal to go after Lamar.” They all were relieved but that posed a bigger question now.
“I know we are all thinking it, why this royal and why Lamar.” Mycal said.
“Hard to say, everyone loves Lamar.” Daniel replied.
“Apparently not everyone.” Sean said.
The three stood around in the middle of the woods, they still had a few hours left on their patrol so they finished up burying the werewolves they took down and headed back out deeper into the woods discussing the results of the blood test.
As they walked the moonlit path they continued on with their conversation, “You don’t think it’s the council do you?” Sean asked the other two which they felt was out of nowhere.
“I mean they aren’t squeaky clean and there has been some major sus movements with in them, but what would they have gained by doing that, all it would of done is start a war that I hate to say it we couldn’t win.” Mycal said.
There are duskers all over the world, but Toledo had the smallest amount. They all knew if the any supernatural force decided to go to an all-out war they would have no chance of winning and if they did the causalities would be great.
“Sean you’re awful quiet.” Mycal said playfully pushing him.
Sean stopped walking and so did the other two, he looked up at the sky as the moon reflected off his blue eyes, he took a deep breath. “So I might know something and this goes in the vault,” Mycal and Daniel looked at one another, “even from Lamar.” Sean said. Daniel was hesitant they never kept things from one another and if they were doing so now it must be something big.
“Okay, what is it.” Daniel said.
“About a week ago I was going to Lamar’s workshop to pick up some potions and a few other things. When I got there the door was unlocked but he wasn’t in the front like he normally would be, so I made my way to the back and as I got closer I could hear he wasn’t alone.”
“Who else was there?” Mycal asked.
“Councilwoman Mary was there and I could hear them talking about the council, and how they were offering Lamar a seat.”
“Wait what!” Mycal was shocked and so was Daniel, Daniel found a knocked over tree and sat down.
“Are you sure that’s what you heard?” Daniel was skeptical.

“Yeah that’s what she said, I ran out of there before they saw me, but I’m sure Lamar picked up on my aura, so I waited until the councilwoman left and I went back in and confronted him about what I heard. Apparently this isn’t the first time he has been approached by a council member. Councilman Thomas is retiring and he wants Lamar to take his seat.”
“Whoa, this is big, why are you just now telling us?”
“Better yet why didn’t he tell us?” Mycal asked.
“He asked me not to, he said he had no plans on joining so it was pointless in getting us all concerned.” Sean said.
“But that doesn’t make any sense, why would the council try to kill him if they want him to join.” Daniel said what they all were thinking. The three were quiet for a moment, so many thoughts were running through their heads.
Sean finally broke the silence. “Maybe it wasn’t the council then. If Lamar would of killed that royal they would’ve offered him up to the vampires to keep us from going to war with them.”
“Yeah, but they have to know we would go after the vampires if something would of happen to Lamar.” Mycal responded.
“True, so a war would have been inevitable.” Sean said. Daniel interrupted “we are forgetting one thing, maybe this has nothing to do with a war but more to do with exposing Lamar. Think about it, there have been whispers in the dusker community about him being an Uber class. What if they are trying to expose that?”
“How would anyone know, only use three and Elle know anything about Lamar being an Uber.” Sean said.
“Nothing in this community stays secret for long, and you have to admit Lamar has been slipping up lately on hiding it. He gets away with it most of the time because people believe he is an Arcane mage, but there has been times we have been fighting with other duskers and he would do something that not even an Arcane mage could do.” They both knew Mycal was right. They just couldn’t figure out who and why would someone benefit from exposing Lamar, everyone knew being an Uber class was an automatic death sentence.
“No one would gain anything from exposing him.”
“What if it could guarantee them a seat on the council?”
“What do you mean?” Sean asked.
“Look at it this way exposing Lamar is going to bring a bunch of attention to the person that does it, which they can use in their favor. We all know the council is just one big political popularity contest, but even still they hold a lot of power.” Mycal was right about the council and they were smart not to trust them either.
The council was made up of 8 individuals, one male and one female from each class. There are a few of the members now are getting to the cut off age of being a member, serving for 75 years, that’s if they don’t get killed off or voted out. Duskers aren’t immortal, their life span is 4 times of a normal human life span which is about 75 years give or take a few years. Councilman Thomas 75 years was coming to close and he wanted someone he can trust to take his seat, that’s were Lamar came in. Elle and Councilman Thomas were once married, they got divorced 10 years ago, but they still remain good friends. Elle already told Thomas that she was not going to help him convince Lamar to take his seat. That’s the one thing Elle despised in their marriage was the fact that Thomas was a council member.
She didn’t always hate the council, in fact Elle was once a member, but after the tragic death of Thomas and her twins and how the council forbid them from seeking revenge against the werewolf royals that killed them Elle turned her back on them. But Thomas stayed, he thought by doing so he could get some answers. Elle grew to resent him for that decision, and that decision was the catalyst of their divorce.
“I think us four need to sit down and talk about this, I don’t think this should be vault.” Daniel said to them as he stood back up. He grabbed his phone out of his pocket.
“What are you doing?” Sean said.
“I’m sending Lamar a text to meet at Elle’s in the morning, we need to figure this out and all the secretiveness isn’t going to help anything.”
“You know he is right.’ Mycal said to Sean.
Sean just nodded his head and Daniel sent the text.
“Done, I guess we have a couple hours to kill until then.”
“Do you think we should just head back now, I really don’t like the royal being alone with Lamar for to long.” Daniel phone rang. Lamar’s name popped up on the screen so he answered.
“What do you mean you almost killed Roberto, and who the hell is Roberto?”
