Charlie:
Highschool isn’t the best place, especially when the one you go to is a private Christian school. The expectation to “fit in” is always there. But that doesn’t matter to Evelyn. No, she actively tries to be different. She keeps her hair short, dying it green or blue. She refuses to be talked down to, and will not “take crap” from anyone. Students in the school admire her, parents and teachers despise her. She is a rebel, through and through.
As Evelyn walks down the hall, she sees Michel, and waves.
“Hi Evelyn!” says Michel.
“How’s it going Mike?” Evelyn said, hiding some excitement. Her and Michel had been friends since kindergarten, and they often hung out with each other.
“It’s going. Do you think that your parents will let us hang out?”
Evelyn shook her head. “Especially since I told them I have a boyfriend now.”
“Who’s your boyfriend?”
“Well… I don’t exactly like like any boys. And, I haven’t really decided. Maybe you?”
“I mean… sure?”
“Great! This makes it a lot easier because my parents won’t interrogate you.”
“Alright. Sounds… good?”
They went on to their classes.
shoot she’s coming this way what do I do? My face turned red. “Not that!” I thought. I looked at the floor.
Evelyn walked towards me, and then said “you know that’s my locker, right?”
“oh… yeah.” I said, hiding my handwritten note in my pocket.
“Hey, are you ok?” Evelyn asked.
“yeah.” I mumbled, blushing more.
“Ok. You don’t have to tell me.”
I moved out of the way, but before Evelyn went on her way, “Actually, Evelyn…”
Evelyn stopped “yeah?”
“Could we… go- never mind.”
“You want to hang out sometime?”
“yeah.” I mumbled again.
“Great! I’ll get a time arranged. What’s your phone number?”
We exchanged phone numbers.
Michel:
I can’t believe it. I have a girlfriend. Well, Kind of. Evelyn is my best friend, and I know her better than any other girl in the school. It should seem like a no-brainer, but it felt wrong. It feels forced. I shook my head, clearing the thoughts. “what should it matter anyways? My parents will finally stop getting on my back over me dating.” I thought to myself.
The bell rang. I looked up, and walked out to the halls. I began to get up.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Ms. Hammond said.
“Sorry,” I responded
“You better be. You know I dismiss you, not the bell.”
I stared at my desk
“You are all dismissed!” 5 minutes after the bell. “I’m gonna be late,” I thought angrily.

I walked out into the hallway to see Evelyn and Charlie, both talking.
I didn’t think anything of it, and said “Hey Evelyn, how’s it going Charlie?”
“It’s going good. Me and Charlie were just arranging a time for us all to hang out.” Evelyn said.
“Great!” I said. In all honesty, I’d been wanting to hang out like we used to. Charlie and I have known each other since the beginning of last year. She had told me her deepest secret, one which I have promised to keep from everyone. Especially her crush. I still remember that day…
Last year:
“Hey Mike… Can I tell you a secret?” Charlie said.
“What’s up?” I asked.
“I’m… I have a…”
I tilted my head.
She whispered in my ear, “I have a crush on Evelyn.”
I looked at her, smiled gently, and said “Does she know?”
Charlie shook her head.
“Do you want her to know?”
Charlie looked surprised “What? Of course not! You know what will happen if anyone finds out… Especially her parents.”
I nodded. “Maybe you should tell her whenever you feel comfortable enough to do it.”
“That’s my plan. Until then, no one, and I mean no one knows.”
“You can count on me.”
Present:
“Hey… Mike… you’re… staring at me again.” Charlie said.
“huh what?” I said
Charlie chuckled and shook her head
“Sorry I spaced off.”
“It’s fine. I’m ugly anyways.”
“You aren’t ugly” I say reflexively.
“Seriously dude? Right in front of your girlfriend?”
“No, I agree with Mike,” Evelyn said.
“Seriously?” Charlie said.
“Yeah. You look… cute?”
“Thanks… I guess. But you’re lying.”
“No. You look extremely cute. You could ask anyone out and I-” Evelyn caught herself “I mean he would immediately say yes.”
“I… I like… I have to go.” Charlie ran to her class.
“Was it something I said?” Evelyn asked.
I shook my head “She just gets nervous around you, that’s all.”
“Oh. Right! I forgot.”
As I turned away from Evelyn, she stopped me.
“Michel?” She asked nervously.
“What’s up?” I responded.
Instead of saying anything, She hugged me.
I just hugged her back.
Evelyn:
It was the day after me and Michel got together. We had plans for the hangout, and Michel said it was ok that I invited Charlie. My face turned red as I saw Charlie. She was wearing a gray sweater, and blue pants. I watched as she put a note in my locker. I gulped, and shook my head. “Don’t do anything stupid, Evelyn. We don’t want people thinking you’re a… Lesbian.” The words from my parents crossed my mind.
“Hi Charlie,” I said, with a fake tone of confidence.
Charlie jumped, “Were you here the whole time?”
“Yep.”
“oh. Then read the note in private. When no one is around. Except maybe Michel.”
“My… bro- I mean boyfriend?” Why did I want to say “brother”? That’s the type of thing that would get me in trouble.
“Yeah. He already knows. Maybe we should… hang out? Just you and me?”
I shook my head “My parents wouldn’t like that.”
“Oh. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.”
Charlie started to cry.
“Shh… It’s ok. You don’t have to-“
I was cut off by a quiet “I don’t deserve your love.”
“What? What do you mean?”
“I mean I don’t deserve love. I don’t deserve happiness. I don’t deserve anything! All I deserve, is to die alone.”
“What the hell are you talking about Charlie? You know if my parents didn’t…” I stopped myself before I told her the truth.
“What? Your parents do something?”
“Hey!”
“Well you started it!”
“What the fu**,” I heard Michel say.
“Sorry honey. Nothing’s happening,” I respond
“Evelyn, I know we’re dating and all, but you never call me ‘honey’. It’s kinda… weird? Like, I don’t think you really want to call me that.” Michel shuffles nervously.
“Sorry. I think I’ll go.” Charlie said.
“Charlie, wait!” I rushed to stop her.
“What is it?”
“I… I have something to show you and Mike. When we hang out, I mean. Just promise you won’t tell anyone?”
“I promise.”
“Thanks.”
I go off to class. Another boring day.
