59. Jenny

Jenny was so proud of herself it was hard to sleep. She lay there on the cozy bed inside of a glass room and stared at the metal ceiling. How could she sleep when she was this excited?

After one day, she had been able to make her Frankenbug self much smarter; it was already able to turn into ten different bugs. Mister Chuck had been super surprised when the chrysalis stage of her Frankenbug happened and finished way faster, but Jenny had a secret. After staring at her Daddy’s Frankenbug chrysalis for so long, when she stared at her own, she was able to help it speed up. It felt kind of funny all over her body and made her lightheaded to do it, but it made it so she could make her Frankenbug eat more and get smarter way sooner. She didn’t tell mister chuck since she wanted to surprise her Daddy with it and she wasn’t sure how good mister chuck was at keeping secrets, but she managed to do it and speed up the chrysalis three times today. For a first day, that felt pretty good.

She had done so good, mister Chuck let her keep her Frankenbug in the room with her. He said it was still necessary to keep under the glass ball, but that was okay. If she kept working hard like this, her own Frankenbug would be as smart as her Daddy’s. Then she could start figuring out how to save him.

She missed her Mommy and Daddy a lot. It was hard not to, but she stopped herself from crying. She had to be brave so she could save them.

Jenny rolled on her side on the bed and stared at her Frankenbug. She squeezed her eyes and concentrated and was able to make the Frankenbug move. It scooted around the cage and she even got it to turn into a stick-bug and wave to her. She waved back and giggled. It was kind of weird to say hi to yourself. Jenny squeezed her eyes again and turned the Frankenbug into a blue butterfly and flapped it around the glass ball. She wanted to make it pink, but she had only eaten a blue one so it didn’t work. After a few flaps, the Frankenbug snapped back to being a silver-green blob and plopped to the floor of the cage.

Jenny wiped the small trickle of blood coming from her nose and tried to catch her breath. She smiled wide at what she just did. Another surprise she couldn’t wait to show her Daddy.

After she caught her breath and the headache went away, Jenny started playing with the Frankenbug again. She felt herself getting better at this every time and the feeling was amazing.

Now it was only a matter of time before she was going to save him and then become the best superhero hero ever, so that no bad guys could ever hurt her family again.

In order to get there, she had to work hard and practice, but that was easy to do when it was so fun and only hurt a tiny bit.
