62. Give up?

The police seemed to understand my stance on Greta’s crime. They also said that they would do their best with the investigation.

After the interrogation they offered me a tour of the department, however I refused and was instead sent back with a huge bag full of food. It was obvious that they were trying to make up for what happened to me previously, but I wondered how far they would go with it.

I was dropped off at my house by the two officers, which made me focus.

I opened the front door, and inside was the smell of a pizza, a food that I normally didn’t eat. I had spent most of my life pinching pennies by cooking for myself, and once I got old enough to not be scared of eating out alone I was already a better cook than most restaurants.

Unfortunately, today I would not partake in such food. I had already eaten enough at the police department, and I knew where the pizza must have come from.

I walked past the kitchen on the way to my room.

“Azure, your home, I ordered a pizza.” My father spoke in a hopeful manner.

“No need, I already ate.” I replied and continued walking into my room.

Certain facts stood out to me; the time, my father, the whole pizza. For a normal person that might be kind, but for me it would not make up for the past dozen years.

I decided to call Jane, since I didn’t get to talk with her at lunch.

“Hello.” I started the call with my normal tone.

“Hello.” Jane replied in a lazy tone. She was waiting for me to bring up the topic.

“Could you tell me about what happened over the past couple weeks?” I asked.

“You mean the girls?” Jane already knew everything.

“Yeah.” I answered feeling slightly guilty.

“So you are ready now?” Jane asked in a sarcastic tone.

  “Yes.” I replied without reaction.

Jane told me about the girls, and their various shenanigans.

Apparently after I was arrested Jane had to stop them from protesting and causing a ruckus.

This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.

Then after I was released they all wanted to meet me, which Jane also had to stop.

Finally, when they saw the newspaper article, they caused the biggest problems of all. Haven locked herself in her room. And the other two tried to find me at any cost.

Jane sounded everything so I could ‘see’ how hard it was for her.

“It must have been hard.” I replied naturally.

“Hard is underestimating those three, and you don’t seem that guilty about it.” She replied sassily.

“Why should I? I owe you three favors for it after all.” I replied. A short silence followed.

“I guess you do owe me.” She broke her own weird silence.

“Tell me about Tracy Jackson, and Holly Gosdan.” I changed the topic.

“Convincing Tracy was easier than I thought. We showed up at her house and told her about us, but she refused at first. I copied one of your fiery speeches, and then she was on board.” Jane said all of this quickly, but I did not miss a single word. However it confused me.

“One of my fiery speeches?” I asked, confused.

“Yes, don’t you know that you get quite passionate sometimes?” Jane teased me.

I decided to ignore it, “What about Holly?” I moved forward.

Jane said in a disappointed voice, “We didn’t get to convince her in the end.” I waited for her to start explaining.

“Haven and I went to Holly’s house, with some difficulty and disbelief her mother let us in. We then approached her room, but she acted like she wasn't there. We tried so many things, but nothing worked. In the end, she only spoke three times. She asked us to stop once, told us she wasn’t worth it, and finally asked us to leave. Her mother made us leave then.” Jane summarized their encounter skillfully.

“When should we go meet her?” I finally asked.

“Didn’t you hear any of what I said, she is a shut in.” Jane complained.

“So I should just give up?” I asked knowingly, this was not the first time I had this conversation.

“That isn’t what I mean.” Jane argued.

“I know, just watch your wording.” I replied.

“When are you going to meet with the girls?” Jane asked with a calm voice.

“Can you put something together?” I asked.

“Aren’t you the one that is supposed to owe me?” Jane replied.

“Is that a no?” I asked in an innocent voice.

“No, but you should bring the food then.” Jane replied.

“Perfect.” I answered, while looking at my huge sack of food from the police station.

“Okay I will ask everybody about the dates.” Jane replied happily.

“Thank you.” I said before we ended the phone call.

After the call I started to work on my homework. The sun was starting to go down again before I stopped. At least I was finally a third of the way done with all my missed work.

As I fell out of my focused study frenzy I noticed my hunger. I walked out of my room and into the kitchen. I looked around the room for my father, and found him missing.

I noticed that there was something in the oven, and that it was still on.

I opened the oven to find the pizza my father had ordered. It had a couple slices taken from it, but it was still warm.

Seeing the appetizing pizza made me suddenly too lazy to cook anything. I quickly ate a few slices, and it was delicious, something that I hadn’t enjoyed in a long time.

A wispy voice under my breath muttered, “Thank you.”
