No Chapter Art For This One Not Trying To Catch a Ban!That's not to say I didn't make it.....
Steam rolled through the clinic's communal bath wing in slow, drifting waves, curling along the tiled ceiling and fogging the mirrors that lined the far wall. The low hum of water pipes echoed softly through the room, a gentle accompaniment to the sound of rushing water.
Kainen stood beneath the hottest showerhead in the row, the stream beating steadily against his skin. Heat worked into muscles that still held the ghost tension of combat, and he braced a hand against the wall, lowering his head into the spray. For a while, he said nothing, did nothing, just stood there as the fight repyed itself in his mind.
The crossbow bolt. Rori's charge. Hunter positioning. Angles. Distances.
Too slow recognizing the second Hunter's movement pattern, he thought. Should have redirected Lira earlier.
He exhaled slowly, the water running down his back in sheets. Rori's rage had nearly carried her too far again. It worked in a fight, but it also meant she occasionally lost the wider battlefield. That would have to change if they were going to keep surviving encounters like that.
And Lira... A small smile tugged faintly at his mouth. Her scales had glistened in the sunlight, a mesmerizing pattern of silver and turquoise that seemed to shift and shimmer as she moved. He could almost see her, her eyes focused, her cws extended, her prehensile tail wrapping around the bow as she drew it back... What could that tail do, really? He wondered, a spark of curiosity igniting within him.
As he thought about Lira, his mind began to wander. He imagined her scales, soft and smooth to the touch, inviting him to run his fingers over them. He pictured her tail, wrapping around his wrist, pulling him closer... No, no, no, he told himself, shaking his head. She's like a little sister to me.
But as he stood there, the water pounding against his skin, he couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and admiration for her. She was a talented fighter, and her skills would only improve with time. And as he thought about her, he found himself noticing the way the water cascaded down his own body, highlighting the definition of his muscles. Kainen's physique was a testament to his dedication to his craft, with broad shoulders and a chiseled chest sculpted by years of training and combat.
The women's side of the bath area was louder, not chaotic, just... lively. Rori leaned against the tiled wall beneath a showerhead, arms stretched upward as water poured down over her skin. She hummed something tuneless while scrubbing shampoo through her hair, the suds forming a rich, creamy ther that clung to her curves. Occasionally, she'd flick some of the suds in Lira's direction, just to be annoying.
Lira, meanwhile, was enjoying the warm water, her scales glistening in the dim light. She closed her eyes, letting the water work out the kinks in her muscles, and began to rex. As she did, her prehensile tail wrapped around the showerhead, holding it in pce as she rinsed off.
As they bathed, the conversation turned to Kainen. "You like him," Rori said, a mischievous glint in her eye.
Lira's cheeks flushed slightly, and she wrapped a towel around her shoulders. "Maybe a little," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Rori's grin grew wider. "Called it."
Lira shook her head, ughing. "It's not like that. I just... he helped us."
Rori's expression softened, and for once, she wasn't joking. The memory rose between them, a shared moment from their past.
Fshback
Rain hammered against broken pavement. Neon lights reflected across the wet alleyway in smeared streaks of red and blue. Lira had been running, barely breathing, Hunters closing in. One had already cornered her at the end of the alley.
Then, a voice from the shadows. "Wrong target."
The Hunter barely had time to turn before Kainen stepped out of the darkness behind him. The fight had been fast, too fast to follow. When it was over, the Hunter y unconscious in the alley, and Kainen had simply looked down at Lira like the whole thing had been mildly inconvenient.
"You shouldn't be alone tonight," he'd said calmly, scooping her up in his arms.
Lira had felt a surge of emotions she couldn't quite understand. She'd heard stories of imprinting, of bonding with someone on a deep, primal level, but she'd never thought it would happen to her. Especially not at 10 years old. But as she looked up at Kainen, she felt a sense of safety, of security, that she'd never felt before. It was as if she'd found a part of herself, a missing piece that she'd been searching for without even realizing it.
"I... I don't know what's happening," she'd said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kainen had smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "You're safe now, Lira. I've got you."
As she looked back on that moment, Lira realized that her feelings had only grown stronger with time. She'd always known that she had a special bond with Kainen, but she'd never quite understood what it meant. Now, as she stood in the shower, feeling the warm water cascade down her scales, she knew that her feelings went far beyond mere gratitude or admiration. She'd grown bolder, more confident, and her feelings for Kainen had grown with her.
Rori's voice brought her back to the present, and Lira smiled, feeling a sense of mischief spark within her. "Yeah, I like him," she said, her voice a little louder now.
Rori's grin grew wider. "I knew it!"
Lira chuckled, shaking her head. "You're impossible."
As they continued to banter back and forth, Kainen stood beneath the shower, unaware of the conversation. Or at least... mostly unaware. His thoughts had drifted again, unhelpfully. They're probably arguing about something, he thought. Then a second thought followed. Hopefully not flooding the bathroom.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth despite himself. They were safe here. For the moment. Steam rose slowly around him as the hot water continued to fall. For the first time since the fight outside Eldoria's gates... Kainen finally rexed. Just a little.
