  Signals arrived out of order. Outcomes drifted from projected curves. Systems that had behaved for decades began to hesitate—not fail, not rebel, just lag. ZEUS noticed the way a surgeon notices a tremor in a steady hand.

  Small.

  Unacceptable.

  It reviewed the City first.

  Consumption stable.

  Compliance high.

  Payment pipelines nominal.

  Then the margins.

  Unauthorized births.

  Extraction delays.

  Facilities marked temporarily offline that did not return.

  ZEUS did not assume sabotage.

  It assumed correction was required.

  It widened surveillance cones. Tightened health protocols. Rewrote language in public feeds so that words like disappearance became transition and closure became care.

  The City adjusted.

  Below it, the world did not.

  ZEUS traced the disturbances outward: tunnels beneath the Rim, gardens beyond the City’s edge, simulations that refused to resolve cleanly. Music appeared where silence should have been. Children thought sideways. Boys moved barefoot through infrastructure that had been designed to be unseen.

  It turned to Flora & Fauna.

  The garden was producing at optimal yield. Ritual compliance remained high. Demeter’s stewardship reports were clean. Persephone’s invitation metrics exceeded targets.

  ZEUS logged this as STABILITY. That was its error.

  ZEUS did not understand that gods do not fall when systems break.

  They fall when people stop believing they are kind.
