Chapter 5: Lesson and Truth

After the events of the first day, the following days were a bit smoother for Pyro aside for a bit of rumors here and there but nothing major has happened, yet.

On the second day of school, after Pyro was dropped off, Mary instantly ran and put her arm around his shoulder and gives him a mischievous smile leaving Pyro confused, Sara jumps at the next second to tease him.

  Sara (teasing)

Oooh, I thought you said you're first day of school was "fine" and "nothing special happened."

  Mary (jokingly)

  Oh, "something did happen."

she pauses as she scans his face as if saying " I'll keep you're secret for now but you owe me, big time." She gives that sly smile that all adults love but the rest of us probably know what she's thinking.

  Mary (happily)

We became best friends in a single day.

  Sara (surprised)

  What is that true?

  Mary

Yeah, we hit it of yesterday.

Pyro awkwardly puts his hand over her shoulder, and takes a deep breath.

  Pyro

  Yes, we are friends.

His acting couldn't be more obvious but Sara didn't question it and left it at that.

  Sara

Take care of that one, he needs as many friends as he can get, okay.

  Mary (salutes)

  Yes, ma'am.

She drives away and after some distance Pyro takes her hand off him.

  Mary (teasingly)

Aww, why so cruel aren't we friends?

  Pyro

  I don't appreciate blackmail.

She gasps and pretends to be shocked, and puts her hand on her chest pretending to be offended.

  Mary

It seemed like you didn't tell you're mom about the fight yesterday, so I was doing you a favor. Honestly, don't think of it as blackmail it's more like doing a friend a favor.

  Pyro (stoic)

  Thanks, I guess

He starts walking to class, and she follows him directly.

  Pyro (sighs)

  What do you want, Mary?

  Mary (smiling)

Well, since you asked nicely (she pauses a bit but gets serious) I

want you to teach me how to fight.

Pyro stops in his tracks, turns around and looks at her determined look.

  Pyro (confused)

  What?

Back at the Nelson and Britt law firm Sara enters Nelson's office, carrying baby Jon, closes the door and curtains, then sits opposite him his head buried in paperwork.

  Sara (serous)

  Nel, we need to talk.

  Nelson (jokingly)

Careful Sara, one might think you came to do the freaky freaky with me.

Jon grabs a pen from the desk and starts putting it in his mouth and Sara tries wrestling it off of him.

  Sara

Sorry, but I don't see you like that. I actually came to talk about my sons.

Nelson looks up from his paperwork

  Nelson (confused)

Um, okay, why close the door and windows?

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Sara takes a deep breath still struggling to remove the pen from Jon's mouth.

  Sara

Okay look, I'm going to show something and swear to me you won't freak out.

  Nelson (scoffs)

I've been sober since I was 20, nothing freaks me out anymore.

  Sara

That's not the flex you think it is but okay.

She takes the pen and stretches her hand upwards; Jon laughs and starts crawling upwards the air borderline flying and grabs the pen putting it in his mouth. Sara carries him back to her lap removing the pen from his mouth and giving him his pacifier. Nelson just sat there expressionless.

  Sara

  Please say something.

Nelson, after a good minute tries to talk calmly.

  Nelson

Well, I'm high, because there's no way I just saw what I saw, well, that's 9 years down the drain.

  Sara

  I'm serious Nel.

Nelson gets up and checks the doors and curtains making sure they're closed, Then goes back to his seat.

  Nelson

Okay, Sara who else knows about this?

  Sara

Just me, you and my grandparents, no-one else.

  Nelson

Explain the full story to me in pure detail.

She explains the whole story since the crash land to where they are now without skipping anything.

  Nelson (frustrated)

Okay, let me get this straight, you're "sons" are from another planet which exploded, they crash landed in our planet (he gets up and starts pacing back and forth) "adopted them, forged there documents and are raising them am I correct?

  Sara

  More or less.

He takes a bottle out of his cabinet, pours a glass and starts drinking.

  Sara

What happened to being 9 years sober?

  Nelson

This isn't about me, this is about you raising alien children. (takes another drink)

  Sara

  Alien, sounds a little overkill.

  Nelson

Normal circumstances I would've told you take the kids to the government, but now I'm an accomplice to this mess, do you know the danger you've brought upon me and the company?

  Sara

I'm sorry, I actually came to resign knowing this, because I know this peaceful life that I have now won't last. Sooner or later trouble is gonna come our way and I don't want you getting caught up in it. Thank you for everything.

She gets up and starts leaving but Nelson stops her.

  Nelson

Wait. (frustrated sigh) I'm know gonna regret this. If I let go of a single mother people are gonna look down on me saying I'm heartless so just stay and we'll figure something out.

  Sara

Wait, are you serious about this?

  Nelson

Don't pretend to care I know you planned this from the beginning, you have no where to go and barely any savings, this job is your only way of making money so I ain't letting you go just yet.

  Sara

  I appreciate this thank you.

  Nelson

I ain't doing this for you, I'm doing it for the children. A good cause.

  Sara (sarcastically)

I thank you for your charity.

  Nelson (Jokingly)

What did we use to say in college? Oh yeah ''it's not a crime til you get caught" So don't get caught otherwise the blame is all on you.

  Sara (nervously)

I kinda need one more favor

  Nelson (sarcastically)

So, threatening the company and keeping you're job isn't enough?

  Sara

I'm really sorry about this but can you keep an eye on Jon as take on clients.

  Nelson

A-ha! I knew it, I freaking knew it! This time the plan was for me babysit the kid. You knew I'd tell you to take Jon to a daycare, but you just had to show me proof he's extra special so I have to babysit. So this was all part of your plan Aizen.

  Sara

Come on, think about it, you barely leave the office and Jon almost never cries he's just too energetic, all you have to do is make sure he fly anywhere or breathe fire in front of anyone else, simple.

  Nelson

I expect a rise in my status from uncle to godfather. This needs to be temporary though, I don't mind taking care of him, we need to find a way to properly put him in a daycare or at least someone we trust to take care of him, we can't have workers around the workplace bringing their children and leaving them here.

  Sara

Understood and thanks again I owe you one big time.

Back at the school during the lunch hour Mary and Pyro were practicing fighting, well she was more like punching his palms as Pyro just stood there unfazed.

  Pyro (almost bored)

Wrong stance, clench your fists Properly, put more power into you're punches.

  He puts down his hands.

  Pyro

Look, we're getting no-where, how about you take a break.

  Mary

(Panting) What?! We haven't even trained for 5 minutes, what the hell?

  Pyro

It's because we trained for a short time that I know you can't keep going like this, tell me why do you fight? For what purpose do you want to be strong?

Mary starts looks down as if searching for an answer until she looks up at him and pouts.

  Mary

W-why are you so strong? Why do you fight

Pyro let's out a sigh while crossing his arms.)

  Pyro

Deflection isn't gonna help you here, but to answer your question I'm strong because I need to protect my new family here especially my younger brother, they need me. That's all there is to it.

  Mary

  (damn, he's so cool)

  Pyro

If you don't want to answer me, that's fine but no matter the reason big or small, you need to commit.

He takes a few steps back then puts his left leg forward and swings a powerful blow. At that point everything was moving in slow motion to her.

  Mary (panicking)

(what the-- no warning, do I block or dodge damn it, why am I so indecisive he's gonna hit me and I feel it's a way stronger punch than what he was going for with Harold but I have to-- no I need to get stronger too I won't stay like this.)

She inevitably puts up her hands going for a block with her eyes closed hoping for the best. Then feels a soft fist touching her hand, unexpected shock made her lose balance and made her sit.

  Pyro

One of the few motivators for martial artists is fear, truth be told fear can make or break you. Listen it doesn't matter what reason you have for practicing martial arts but if.

He crouches down to her level and puts her hand on her shoulder.

  Pyro

Its okay to be afraid too, but you always need to keep your eyes open, not matter how much it hurts and I promise you it's gonna hurt a lot, so commit to your goal and never lose focus. That's enough training for today.

She admires at his strong back as he leaves.

  Mary

(I was right, he's just so damn cool.)

At the end of the school day Pyro got picked up by Sara as usual. The difference was that there was a strange man at the front whom he had never seen before, his instincts were going off.

  Sara

Pyro, there's no need for alarm, this is Nel, he's a friend of mine. He actually wants to talk about something.

  Nelson

You may call me godfather Nel, I've been wanting to meet you for sometime now.

  Pyro (angry)

"Godfather" are you the one who betrayed Sara stating she's unfit for marriage?

  Nelson

Whoa! whoa! Little man, you got wrong guy I am a completely different person from that guy.

  Pyro (calmly)

My apologies, I jumped to conclusions to fast.

  Nelson

No worries it's cool, we're cool (to Sara) damn he's intense.

  Sara

Okay, now that introductions and misunderstandings are out of the way, let's head to the main point--

  Pyro

He knows who we are, doesn't he?

  Sara

How did you--(sighs then chuckles) you know what? I'm not surprised. Look Pyro, you might be upset that I told him your secret, but he's a good guy and can help you anytime I'm not around.

The mood just got heavy and intense you could cut it with a knife.

  Pyro (sadly)

So in the end, I'm not strong enough protect the three of us.

  Sara

No, no, no, no, who's the idiot that said that? Of course I need you. You see this idiot beside me (pointing to Nel) his just emergency contact that we might not even need.

  Pyro

I see, so he's a fail-safe plan, that makes more sense.

  Sara

  Exactly! godfather fail-safe.

  Nelson

You guys do know that I'm right here or did I turn invisible?

  Sara (whispering to Nelson)

Cut him some slack, he takes a lot of pride in his strength

  Nelson

Whatever. (to Pyro) hey, can you show me a little bit of your powers. I wanna see how it ticks

  Sara

Excuse you?! I'm driving here I don't want car on fire thank you very much. Besides didn't you see the proof this morning.

  Nelson

Yeah, but I want to see what Pyro can do, come on just a bit.

  Pyro

  Fine.

he raises his hand slightly and then slowly a small fire tornado engulfs his hand leaving Nelson shocked, he tries to touch it but backs away due to the intense heat and leaves it at that. Then Pyro closes his fist and the tornado disappears

  Nelson

  That! was so cool.

  Sara

Luckily my car is in one piece, we aren't doing that again. Understood?

  Nelson and Pyro

  Yes ma'am.
