"It seems I have run out of food..." Emilia says, staring at the inside of her empty fridge. Her stomach growls and she thinks: How did I not notice earlier? Maybe I was too focused on gaming...
Emilia always loved Grand Strategy games, but she had always wished she could play as a character in the world and walk around the lands she ruled, instead of just staring at a map. So "Vera Phantasia", a VRMMORPG with Grand Strategy elements, was the perfect game for her. Diplomacy, trade, military management, in-depth demographic simulation, a dynamic economy, court politics and much more. It had all she could ever ask. Since Vera came out on November 22nd 2033 to today November 21st 2035, about 80% of her awake time has been spent playing it.
"It's time to buy some more food, I guess..." I'm planning to skip breakfast and lunch tomorrow, I probably wouldn't be able to handle that if I skip dinner today. It's the two year release anniversary tomorrow, so she wants to maximize time spent playing. They had a cool surprise anniversary event last year, I wonder what they will do this time...
Before going out, she gets herself minimally presentable to go outside, switching her pajamas for some casual baggy clothes. Regarding her physical appearance, Emilia has unkept long brown hair, tired brown eyes, very noticeable eye bags and a skin tone that makes it clear she gets no vitamin D.
Checking the time on her phone, she see it's 23:59. Eh... I could go to some 24/7 store, I guess. She opens the door of her apartment and heads out into the corridor. The elevator is disabled due to ongoing maintenance, so she has no choice but to use the stairs.
As she goes down the steps, she gets a notification on her phone. When she goes to pick it from her pocket, she accidentally misses a step and stumbles forward.
Don't tell me this is how I'm gonna die!
Her head hits the step as time hits midnight.
Emilia wakes up lying on a bed of a familiar bedroom, but it's not hers. Well, it is hers in a way... it's her character's room in her character's mansion in Vera.
This was were I last logged out, where I always log out, but... it looks more real now. She liked to imagine that when she was logged out, her character was sleeping, so she always made sure to log out lying on her bed.
It looks way too real for this to be a VR game still, I must have gotten isekai'd to the game world! When she's not playing, she's watching anime and reading novels, specially within the "Isekai" genre. In truth, she was hoping this would happen some day.
At what time did she work? She didn't. By the 2030s most of the world had adopted universal basic income policies due to a global mass unemployment crisis, so she's basically just a NEET living on government money.
She looks down at herself, noticing the even paler skin, better proportions and fancy pajamas. I have become my character Kristina Sanguis... That's... Amazing! Let's go!! She had made her character a vampire human and, with her infinite creativity, she came up with the surname Sanguis (it's just blood in Latin).
She gets up from her bed and moves to the dressing table in her room. Just like the rest of her mansion, her room is fully furnished. Most of the furniture had no purpose in-game other than decoration.
Lots of players, most even, wouldn't bother with furnishing their homes. "Why spend money on furniture, when I could use it to expand the army or the economy instead?" They thought. Those were called "min-maxers", they are the ones who would always seek to optimize their gameplay.
Emilia, meanwhile, was a "roleplayer", someone who would do their best to roleplay as their character even if it meant not playing in an optimal way. Thankfully for her, the nation she belonged to in Vera was filled with other roleplayers, so no one would try to ruin her precious "immersion" there.
The door to her room gently opens and a maid enters, "A-already awake my lady?"
"Is there a problem, Rose?" Emilia- no, rather, Kristina asks.
"No-no! It's just I usually have to wake you up, so I was surprised! That's all!"
This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.
It seems I oversleep in both worlds then...
"There's no need to be so nervous, I don't bite... or do I?", Kristina bares her fangs and Rose let's out an yelp.
She's as easy to tease as I imagined, hehe...
Vera allowed players to create custom NPCs to populate their bases. In-game they didn't do much other than just stand around, but here they seem to have become real people. Rose was one of the NPCs Emilia created, she was the only non-undead human NPC made for the mansion.
Rose has red bob-cut neck-length hair and light green eyes. Unsurprisingly, she wears a maid uniform. She's an young adult. Most people would consider her to be at least a bit pretty.
Besides the NPC's appearance, there was also an optional description section players could write. It had no gameplay effects, serving only as flavor text. As you might have guessed, Emilia spent hours writing descriptions for her NPCs. Her descriptions included the character's personality, their backstory and even a list of 'fun facts' about them.
Rose's description, summarized:
-Personality: Scaredy cat. Loyal.
-Backstory: Orphaned by war, she was given a place to live at the mansion and became an apprentice maid at a young age. By the time she reached adulthood she had become Kristine's lady's maid.
-Fun Fact: Has a crush on the head butler, Ernst.
As Rose brushes her hair, Kristina looks at her reflection on the dressing table's mirror. White as snow waist-length hair with arched bangs, red as blood eyes and skin as pale as a corpse's. Her face is perfectly symmetrical and overall her appearance would be considered conventionally attractive.
Emilia's thought process was basically: "I'm already ugly IRL, why should I make myself ugly in-game? I'm gonna make myself as pretty as I can!"
How does she have a reflection if she's a vampire? It's a common misconception that vampires don't have reflections. That actually only applies to silver mirrors, since silver is a holy metal. All the mirrors in Kristina's mansion are made of alternative materials.
"My lady, I saw Mister Ernst on my way here and he told me that there's an urgent matter he would like to discuss with you as soon as possible."
"Really? Then we better hurry."
"Yes, my lady!" She tries to brush faster.
Dressed in a casual black dress and wearing light make-up, Kristina heads out from her room and Rose follows right behind her. Well, her dress is only really casual by noble standards, a commoner would likely never wear a dress as good as that in their entire lives.
They head to the main hall, where the butler can normally be found. Soon, they find him looking through a window.
Ernst is a human vampire, just like Kristina. His eyes are red as blood and his hair black as coal. He looks like he's 20, but his real age would be closer to 50. Unsurprisingly, he wears butler clothes.
"Rose told me there was something you wanted to discuss with me?"
"Indeed, my lady."
Ernst Brennen's description, summarized:
-Personality: Cunning and diligent. Also, loyal.
-Backstory: Due to his intellect, he was able to get into a prestigious university at a very young age. At 15 he completed his education and, due to a coincidence, he met Kristina soon after. Recognizing her abilities, he pledged allegiance to her, before she even had any land or titles. When he became 20, he asked that he be turned into a vampire and Kristina complied.
-Fun fact: Used to love garlic before he became a vampire.
"Please, look outside." Ernst says, gesturing towards the window he was just looking through.
Kristina nods and approaches it. The moment she sees the outside, her eyes go wide.
"Where is my town?!" She screams. It was the only town I had to directly manage, the rest I had left to vassals, don't tell me I have lost it?! In the place where she expected to see roads and buildings, all that she saw was trees.
"I believe it isn't the town that moved, but my lady's mansion that did."
"I see..." Looking at it more calmly I can see the terrain surrounding the mansion is different than it's supposed to be. So, what Ernst is saying makes sense.
"There's a reason for concern, though."
"What? I mean this already seems pretty bad..."
"Neither warp spells nor communications spells are able to reach your duchy or anywhere else in the kingdom of Daemonia. In fact, we haven't been able to reach any area of the known world."
"That's... really bad..."
"I took upon myself to investigate the skies to find our location, but the stars look completely foreign to me. They don't match any of our star maps. I fear we could have been transported to a completely different world."
Double isekai...
"That could explain the spells being out of reach... Warp still works to get to the mansion, right?"
"Yes, we tested Warp and Message, they both still work locally."
Rose looks like she's about to pass out, the information must have been overwhelming.
"Calm" Kristina casts on Rose, making her calm down.
"Thank you, my lady."
In the game, 'calm' was a spell meant to remove certain negative status effects, like "Afraid" and "Confused". I'm glad it worked on her. Anyways, good to know voice activation of spells still works like they did in the game...
"So, when did it happen?" Kristina continues her questions.
"About 4 hours ago, around 16 o'clock I believe."
"Did any other building get transported with us?"
"None, as far as I'm aware."
Dammit, I was hoping my personal army's barracks got here with us, that manpower would be useful... I'll have to do with who I have here then.
"Please, tell all of the mansion's guards to meet me at the entrance hall."
