Chapter 15

From the very start of the ritual, the three of them felt an inexplicable bond. That sudden sense of trust turned out to be the key to facing the mission ahead. Once the formalities were over, Evelyn, Brenda, and Sean slipped into conversation like old friends, swapping insights and dissecting every scrap of information they had. Hours slipped by as they hammered out a detailed plan, focused, relentless, while the fire crackled in the hearth, its glow painting shifting shadows across their intent faces.

Spread out in the center of the table lay an ancient map, hand-drawn on weathered parchment. The route to the island shimmered in faint iridescent strokes, the colors shifting just a little every time they looked at it. Scattered beside it were notes and cryptic symbols that hinted at puzzles still waiting to be solved.

Their first priority was to reach the sailboat Sean had put into storage at the start of winter. Luckily, he’d already run checks on the plumbing, wiring, and engine. The vessel was ready to hit the water again.

It was a single-masted sailboat named Selkie, its keel painted a deep, haunting blue, the exact shade of the North Sea under moonlight.

It was a crucial step for the mission’s success, and Sean assured them that every detail had been handled with the utmost care.

As he continued explaining the Prophecy, Evelyn felt lost, like she was reaching for a shadow that kept slipping through her fingers. It was as if she were trapped in a nightmare that began the day her daughter was taken, a nightmare with no way out. What hit her hardest was learning that on the path to the Moon Pendant they’d have to face three major trials, whose nature they knew absolutely nothing about. And to make things worse, they had no clue how to use the bow with its three arrows, the rope, or the compass stored alongside the map. Every clue only seemed to open up a new riddle.

“It’s natural to feel that way, Evelyn,” Brenda said, her voice calm and steady, full of empathy. “Who wouldn’t be confused in your place? But we’re here for you. Together, we’ll figure this out.”

Sean nodded in quiet agreement. Both of them knew they’d give their lives if that’s what it takes to help Evelyn uncover the truth. Failure wasn’t an option, the consequences would be catastrophic.

Only then did Evelyn begin to piece together the meaning of her mother’s words, which were echoing in her mind like a distant refrain: Evelyn, I tried to protect you in every way I could. I prayed we would never come to this, but it’s too late now. You’ve taken on a tremendous responsibility, and the risks that come with it are beyond measure.

Those words cut into her like sharp blades. Guilt, fear, and determination tangled in her chest, squeezing the air from her lungs. With a nervous gesture, she ran a hand through her hair, fighting not to give in to the surge of emotion.

Sean picked up the plan again, his voice steady. “Leaving from Saleen Harbor and heading north, we should hit the island after just a few hours at sea. The map will guide us, but we’ve got to be ready for anything.”

He caught the hesitation on the women’s faces, both of them frozen, but listening. Evelyn’s eyes stayed locked on the map, tracing the shimmering path inked into the parchment. Two questions burned inside her: what was waiting for them on the island? And would they be strong enough to pass the trials?

“The only instructions we’ve got are to follow the path exactly as marked, no detours,” Sean went on, his tone firm but edged with concern. “If we don’t make it back to the boat with the pendant before sunrise, we’ll be trapped on that island until the next full moon. All we can do is hope luck decides to cut us a break.”

The Prophecy was clear: only the chosen woman could break the spell and claim the powers of the Moon Pendant. Evelyn arched a brow, not entirely convinced any of this was real.

“I come from a family where magic was never a mystery,” she admitted, “but what’s happening now goes way beyond anything I ever imagined.”

Sean’s jaw tightened as he lowered his gaze, hiding the unease stirred not only by the Prophecy, but also by the sea’s grim forecasts. Evelyn was ready to risk everything to find Leyla, while Sean and Brenda were driven by a deep faith in something far greater than themselves.

That night, after carefully packing their backpacks with everything they’d need for the mission and drafting a meticulous plan for the following day, Evelyn collapsed onto the couch, drained. Her body was weary, but her mind refused to rest, racing through a storm of thoughts. Before sleep finally claimed her, her eyes drifted once more to the map, still spread across the table like a fragile, enigmatic treasure. The lines sketched on the parchment seemed to pulse in the half-light, and Evelyn felt a quiet reverence stir inside her, as if she were standing at the threshold of an ancient, inescapable fate.

Brenda, watching Evelyn drift into sleep, tiptoed over and pulled a quilt over her, a small gesture heavy with affection. With one last glance around the room, she switched off the lights and slipped into bed beside Sean. He, too, seemed lost in thought, yet between them lingered an unspoken bond that thrived in silence.

That night, sleep showed no mercy to any of them. They rested, yes, but it was a shallow rest, fractured by uneasy dreams and shadows that refused to settle. The weight of the mission, the unanswered questions, the looming trials; they had all wormed their way into their thoughts, twisting their minds into a maze of doubt. Evelyn, most of all, found herself wrestling with the same haunting questions that had plagued her before she’d closed her eyes: what awaited them on the island? And would they be strong enough to face it?

The only sound in the house was the steady rhythm of Sean’s and Brenda’s breathing. And yet, even in that fragile quiet, a subtle tension hummed in the air, as though they were already traveling through dangerous waters while their bodies still lay safe at home. So the night crept on, holding the three of them suspended between waking and dreaming, braced for the unknown that would come with dawn.
