CHAPTER 15: THE WHISPER IN THE DARK
[SECURITY LEVEL: ELEVATED]
[CORE SENSORS: ANOMALY DETECTED]
[THREAT CATEGORY: UNKNOWN]
The Oasis was never truly silent. Between the hum of the Core, the clatter of excavation, and the distant shouting of the soldiers, there was always a rhythm. But at 02:00, the rhythm changed. A frequency I didn't recognize began to ripple through the basalt walls it was a vibration in the mana-field.
I didn't leave my desk nor reach for a weapon. I simply closed the ledger and opened the high-fidelity sensor array.
"Core, isolate the variance in Sector 9," I commanded.
The screen flickered. Sector 9 was a storage area for the excavation tools, located near the new Floor 3 shaft. It was supposed to be empty. But as the image cleared, I saw a shimmer. A distortion in the air, like heat rising off the sand.
"I didn't authorize any night-shifts in Sector 9," I whispered.
I didn't trigger the general alarm. If this was a high-tier assassin, the soldiers would only be a distraction—or worse, a body count. I needed someone who knew how to hunt.
"Ami. Wake up. We have a shadow in the basement."
"I'm awake," she said instantly. I could hear the slide of her daggers. "Where?"
You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.
"Sector 9. Moving toward the Core-shaft. It’s using a Void-Shrowd, Rank 6 or higher. The sensors can barely track the heat-leak."
"Rank 6?" Ami’s voice was tense. "Gray, that’s a Master-Assassin. My daggers won't even tickle someone with that kind of mana-density."
"I didn't ask you to kill it, Ami. I asked you to flush it out. I’ve adjusted the gravity-tiles in that sector to a negative-zero float. If you can push it into the center of the room, I’ll do the rest."
I watched the feed. Ami entered the sector from the ventilation duct. She was a shadow among shadows. She didn't make a sound as she landed on the stone. The distortion moved. It was fast—faster than anything I’d seen Lilo do.
"Now!" I shouted.
Ami threw a flash-powder charge. It didn't do damage, but it illuminated the mana-distortion for a split second. A figure in gray wrappings, holding a blade that seemed to drink the light.
I didn't wait for the assassin to react. I triggered the Sector 9 lockdown.
The gravity went sideways.
The assassin was flung against the far wall with the force of a falling carriage. I didn't let up. I pulsed the mana-vents, filling the room with a dense, paralyzing fog.
The figure struggled, its blade cutting through the air, trying to find a target that wasn't there. Then it stopped. It looked directly at the security camera. It didn't look scared. It looked curious.
"I'm not here to kill the Core," a voice whispered through the intercom. It was a woman’s voice, cold and musical. "I came to see the man who thinks he can own the desert."
"I didn't invite you for an interview," I said. "And I didn't give you permission to enter my facility. Give me a reason not to liquidate your mana-signature right now."
The woman laughed. She lowered her blade. "The Guild is sending a fleet. Not a caravan nor a knight. A fleet. They’ve declared you a 'Dungeon-Class Threat.' You have three days before the sky turns black with airships."
I didn't feel my heart rate increase.I simply looked at the ledger.
"Three days," I said. "I didn't think they’d move that fast. I’ll have to expedite the Floor 3 cannons."
The woman blinked. She seemed surprised by my lack of terror. "You're going to fight the Empire's fleet with a mining crew?"
"I didn't say I was going to fight them," I replied. "I said I was going to expedite the cannons. There’s a difference."
I released the gravity-lock. The woman stood up, her Void-Shrowd flickering back into place. "My name is... well, I haven't decided if you're worth a name yet. But I’ll be watching. If you survive the fleet, maybe we can talk about a real partnership."
She vanished. Not through the door. She simply dissolved into the mana-field.
I didn't call for a pursuit. I didn't ask Ami to follow her. I sat in the silence of my office and opened a new page in the ledger.
[THREAT LEVEL: EXISTENTIAL]
[TIMELINE: 72 HOURS]
[PROJECT: THE GREAT LEVELER]
I didn't make the world this way. But in three days, I was going to show the Empire what happens when you try to fire the man who keeps your world running.
