What Just Happened?

  Part 2 – Kenny Sullivan

Chapter Thirteen – What Just Happened?

Kenny's expression was full of curiosity. Who is this guy? And what the hell did he just do? Looking at him now, he didn't seem that special. He wasn't big. He didn't seem that strong or smart. He didn't seem graceful. He didn't look particularly mean. He didn’t even seem angry. Even his darkness seemed to have gone away. In fact, he wasn't put together that well. If he didn’t have that scruffy beard, he’d just be a normal guy. In fact, if he was dirty, he would look like a bum.

Benny walked up, holding his pistol under his coat. “Kenny, what's going on? Who's this guy?” He gestured with his head toward the bearded man.

The bearded man spoke. “Are you hurt?” He waved his hand in the air in front of Kenny. “Mr. Sullivan, are you okay? Did he cut you?”

Kenny was still confused. He said, “No, no. He didn't cut me. Yeah, sure, I'm fine. Everything's fine, Benny.” He waved his hand up and down in a paddling motion. This signaled Benny to put the gun away.

The bearded man replied, “That's good. A piece of advice? Next time you go to rescue a woman down an alley. Unbutton your coat. Or maybe consider leaving her to her own devices. Some people may not be worth saving.”

  Kenny nodded.

Frank looked to the woman, “Quit squirming. No one said you could move. Be glad I didn't shoot you.”

Benny had approached the men. “Can someone tell me what's going on?”

Kenny started to say, “It was a trap.”

The bearded man interrupted him, “Yes, it was. I saw Mr. Sullivan defending himself quite well. He took on two men and a woman with his gun tucked in his belt. He took that guy down with three blows with that woman trying to stab him in the back. Then he took the knife away from her and subdued her without hurting her too much. Plus, he did this while scaring off the other guy. He did this by himself, knowing that his friend would back him up. The other knife is over there.” He handed Kenny one knife and pointed towards the front of the alley on the right.

Kenny looked to where the other knife landed.

“I don't know. That's not what I saw.” Benny offered meekly.

“That's exactly what you saw. Isn't that right, Mr. Sullivan?” He stayed in front of Kenny. He didn't turn to look at Benny. He didn't have to. There was force in the words he spoke.

Kenny nodded and said, “Yeah. If that's the way you want it? You kind of saved my butt. I guess I can tell it that way. Until I can't.”

  The man nodded at Kenny.

“Thanks for that. All that was kind of crazy. Out of left field, you know.” Kenny pointed to the man on the ground and at the woman. “I'm Kenny Sullivan.” With his head, he gestured toward Benny. “That's Benny. I really hate to put it this way, but who are you and what the hell just happened?”

“I'm Frank. Well, maybe not so much. But that's my name. You'll meet Fred in a minute. I came here for the guy on the ground. I had a message to deliver. My business with him is done now.” He was pointing at the man on the ground.

Kenny said quietly, “Yeah, no more business with the white-haired man. Nah, that's not an odd thing to say.”

Frank continued, “Mr. Sullivan, there are some things you don't want to know.”

  Kenny nodded.

Frank said, “I only guessed that Benny might be doing surveillance. I wasn't sure. He looks like police. No offence meant.” He glanced at Benny.

  Benny shrugged.

Frank continued, “Mr. Sullivan. I didn't spot you until after the trap was set. So, I guess, you were tracking the guy that ran away?”

Kenny gave one slight nod. He was going to let Mr. Frank talk. There were pieces missing from this story. If he waited long enough, they might come out.

Frank smiled as he watched. The woman was trying to inch her way down the alley. Calmly he walked over to her. He placed his hand lightly on her back between her shoulder blades. Slowly, he began to force her body against the wall. He spoke to her softly and sternly. “Be a good girl and stay where I put you. If you run, I'll shoot out your kneecaps. It will be hard for you to get any kind of work without legs. Now come on and scoot back where I put you.”

Janice squeaked like a mouse and did what she was told.

He released the pressure on her. His hand stayed on her back while she moved. When she returned to where he put her, he spoke. “Thank you. Now be a good girl and stay right there. I know you can do this for me.”

  She nodded meekly.

Frank turned back to the men. "As I was saying. I was tracking the guy on the ground. You were tracking the guy that ran away. The guy that was in the building didn't get out. He's still hiding in there somewhere.” Frank gestured toward the building with his hand.

Kenny asked, “How do you know me?”

Frank pointed at the man lying in the garbage by the wall. When he spoke his voice was emotionless, “We have people in common. When I was hunting Johnny there, I came across people who knew you. I knew about Johnny and the girl from another state. He was on a list I found. I wanted to see how he was linked to someone I'm interested in. I have some interesting stuff about a Prosecutor. I'm going to send it to you.”

Kenny spoke solemnly. “I never spotted you, but I thought I was being watched.”

“You were looking for surveillance. I wasn't doing surveillance. I was hunting. They're not the same thing. My business here will be completed as soon as the item is delivered. Then I'll be on my way. At least, for now.” Frank finished speaking.
