Chapter 18: Surrounded

When Xiao Ning heard that strange roar, echoing amidst the rustling of the leaves, he automatically raised his head and looked in a certain direction. In the distance, it was possible to see the tree branches being shaken. Something big was approaching and fast.

"If I'm not mistaken, it's a Bone Breaker Gorilla," commented Xiao Ning, who after hearing the roar had a shock when the memory came to his mind.

And as he had predicted, jumping from one branch to another, a giant creature with muscular arms appeared. The Bone Breaker Gorilla was over two meters tall. Covering its body was a layer of gray hair mixed with black. Its eyes were dyed red, and its large arms, its greatest weapon, were as wide as Ning's body.

When he saw the Bone Breaker Gorilla running in his direction, Xiao Ning jumped to the side and stayed as far away as possible from the lower branches of the trees. He knew very well how this Demonic Beast attacked. Therefore, with the spear pointed upward, he waited. Suddenly, a fierce Energy, loaded with anger, swept toward him. The monster was trying to intimidate him.

However, he was unshaken and calmly analyzed that this Demonic Beast was at the 4th Layer of the Mundane Realm, just like him. Luckily, the Gorilla hadn't evolved too much, because this type of monster can easily reach the Awakening Realm.

Beating its chest as if it were beating drums, the monster stopped on the branch that was closest to Ning, right above his head.

The moment he noticed the astute change in position, instead of moving away, Xiao Ning crouched, stuck the back of the spear into the ground with the tip pointing up, and stopped moving.

"HUUHUH! HUUHUH!" shouted the beast, bearing its yellow teeth and beating its chest like crazy. Seeing that its prey didn't react, it became even angrier and started jumping on the branch it was on.

As Xiao Ning did not move, the Bone Breaker Gorilla became increasingly irate. It started beating its chest harder, making hollow sounds reverberate through the forest. Its roars became maddened. And due to the great weight of its muscular body, not only the branch, but the entire tree seemed to shake.

Suddenly, losing its patience completely, it jumped with its arms and legs spread. It wanted to crush that irritating creature, which didn't move, with its large muscles. Thus, it clenched its fists, which proved to be the size of a human being's head, and dove toward the ground.

Xiao Ning, when he saw the Bone Breaker Gorilla falling in his direction, rolled to the side, leaving his spear stuck in the ground behind, and got out of the way. The next moment, a "Boom!" sound was heard. The ground around trembled, and a miserable scream arose.

The fall took only a few instants. It was so fast that Xiao Ning barely had time to dodge, but in the end, he came out without any injuries. With his clothes stained with dirt, he stood up and looked at the place where the Gorilla fell.

With the spear piercing its chest, the monster was lying on its side—due to the fall, the spear ended up detaching from the earth—with its eyes closed and its fur dyed red. It was already dead.

Normally, piercing its body like this would be difficult even for an Awakened (someone in the Awakening Realm), but its weight, added to the fall, facilitated the weapon's job of piercing it and reaping its life.

After having killed the Bone Breaker Gorilla, Xiao Ning pulled the spear from its body. Luckily, it hadn't broken. Then he started to prepare to remove the parts of the monster that could be sold.

He was truly thankful for knowing the behavior of this Demonic Beast so well. Because of that, he could defeat it without many problems, therefore, he wouldn't have to worry about continuing hunting.

The Bone Breaker Gorilla is a monster that loves to battle. Whenever it encounters a possible opponent, it immediately challenges them by beating its own chest. But when the other party ignores it or runs away, it chases them until it kills them. It was a hot-blooded beast.

And because he knew such hot-headed behavior, Xiao Ning succeeded in his trap. The only problem with his plan would be if the spear hadn't resisted the blow. However, luckily, the Gray Sequoia proved to be quite resistant.

It didn't take long to remove the parts he needed. The organs were placed in the glass jar, which in the end proved not to be big enough. And the arm muscles, which could be used to make body strengthening potions, were put in the cloth sack.

Everything was almost ready for Xiao Ning to return to the hunt. When suddenly:

  "HUUHUH!"

  "HUUHUH!"

Several roars, from different directions, emerged from the forest. Apparently, all the noise made by the Bone Breaker Gorilla had attracted its friends. Or it could just be Xiao Ning's scent, since humans are one of the favorite dishes of Demonic Beasts.

Feeling a large amount of dangerously wild Spiritual Energy approaching, the lazy one (on other occasions), tightened the handle of the spear and prepared himself. The surrounding trees began to rattle intensely. They weren't coming from a single place, but from several different points. Xiao Ning didn't know very well how many there were, but with all certainty, at least one of them was at the 7th Layer of the Mundane Realm.

Among human cultivators, when one is in the Mundane Realm, the difference in power from one layer to another is not very large. However, when it comes to monsters in general, things are a little different. Some possess strong bodies that compensate for the lack of level, others are armed with deadly poisons.

In the case of the Bone Breaker Gorilla, its overwhelming strength allows it to face cultivators with an even higher Realm. For example, a gorilla that is at the 7th Layer of the Mundane Realm would be capable of even killing a cultivator at the 1st Layer of the Awakening Realm, depending on the situation.

And as much as this difference in levels doesn't seem that big, one must know that a human cultivator at the 1st Layer of the Awakening Realm has at least three times more Spiritual Energy than someone at the 7th Layer of the Mundane Realm, or more. And the difference between their strengths isn't even worth mentioning.

For Xiao Ning, who was still far from being a 5th Layer Mundane, facing a Bone Breaker Gorilla that was three levels higher than him would be quite problematic. And that is if the monster were alone.

While waiting in a battle stance, he let the electricity of the Electric Palm run from his hands to the body of the spear. The bluish beam, normally timid, now shone with liveliness, releasing threads of discharge through the air, as if they were small lightning bolts.

In part, this increase in power in such a simple technique was due to the fact that Ning's cultivation had increased in recent days, due to the Eternal Sleeper Technique. However, the main reason was the Lei Gong Bracelets, which doubled the power of the Lightning Element.

With his sharpened Spiritual Sense and his Combat Techniques ready to be used, he was prepared for the battle. However, unfortunately for him, this time he wouldn't be able to use the same tactic as before. And fleeing also seemed out of the question. That being said, this was a truly dangerous situation.

The noises were getting louder with roars and bellows closer. Leaves fell like rain from the trees, which swayed as if they were being ravaged by a storm. Suddenly, several Bone Breaker Gorillas appeared in Ning's field of vision. With a quick glance, it could be seen that there were at least ten. And two were at the 7th Layer of the Mundane Realm, and the rest between the 4th and 6th.

It was indeed a desperate situation. An Awakened cultivator, who was alone, might not survive such a large attack, not even if he tried to escape.

Fleeing seemed the sensible choice to make, but Xiao Ning knew that if he did, he would be dead. First: Bone Breaker Gorillas are faster, they have the advantage of moving atop the trees. All they needed was a jump to cross dozens of meters. Second: As already mentioned, these monsters go crazy, bloodthirsty, when they see their prey fleeing in fear.

Now there was only one option: kill them all! This was one of the reasons that made Xiao Ning like Alchemy so much, because, apart from the occasional explosions, he didn't need to face such dangers.

Above the trees, the Bone Breaker Gorillas started making noise and beating their chests. Each trying to overpower the other. When suddenly, one that was at the 5th Layer, the most impatient of all, dove with its fists clenched.

Seeing it falling in his direction, Xiao Ning jumped to the side. He spun his spear and prepared to deliver an attack the moment it hit the ground. But then, a second jumped; a third; Fourth... Above Xiao Ning's head, the landscape was painted with Demonic Beasts.

Concentrating Spiritual Energy in his legs to try and be a little faster, he started running while dodging the monsters, which fell like leaves in autumn. While dodging, he gave thanks that those things didn't know how to fly, because if they could change the trajectory of their fall just a little, he would end up flattened.

When the last Gorilla fell to the ground, Xiao Ning, knowing he had to act first, jumped towards the one closest to him. The monster, excited by the challenge, beat its chest twice and raised its arms; fists clenched.

"Dragon's Breath: Tongue of Fire!" he roared, as he pierced with the spear.

A flame exhibiting an intense orange glow leaped toward the Bone Breaker Gorilla. The monster, feeling the temperature rise, tried to protect itself but was swallowed by the fire.

The Gorilla let out a miserable scream as its body was burned. Its fur was turned to ashes instantly, and its skin gained a ruby tone. However, the attack was not enough to kill it. It only managed to make it even angrier.

However, Xiao Ning already expected this, because without stopping the attack of his spear, he thrust forward, piercing its eye and going through its head.

With a pull, he ripped the spear back and prepared to attack the second Bone Breaker Gorilla. But at this moment, two of them jumped together, ready to crush him with their clenched fists.

Xiao Ning jumped backward, managing to avoid the attack from both. However, he didn't notice the third one that approached from the right flank.

Then, as if swatting a fly, the Gorilla swung its arm, throwing the back of its hand against the target's head.

At the last second, Xiao Ning used his spear to block the blow. However, he realized too late that that was one of the Demonic Beasts that was at the 7th Layer of the Mundane Realm.

The spear, made of Gray Sequoia, bent as if it were green bamboo. And when it couldn't take it anymore, it snapped in two.

With the force of its attack only slightly reduced, the beast's right hand hit Xiao Ning, who in a final attempt to protect himself, crossed his arms anyway he could in front of his face.

Hit by the Gorilla's attack, he was sent flying into the trunk of a tree. His back slammed hard against the hard wood, letting the air escape from his lungs. And blood ran from his nose, which had been injured by his own arms, which ricocheted during the block.

Still holding the fragments of the spear in each hand, Xiao Ning tried to get up. But his arms, which luckily weren't broken yet, creaked with pain, making him let out a groan of lamentation.

He wanted to sit down and tend to his wounds, which even though they weren't severe, hurt a lot. However, there was no time for that. When he raised his head, there were already three Demonic Beasts running towards him, with one of them being the one responsible for sending him flying.

Xiao Ning tightened his grip on the spear fragments, and in his left hand, sparks of electricity flashed, and in the right, an incandescent spark shone.

Refusing to flee, he swung his right arm with momentum, and a flame of fire flew as if it were a blade cutting horizontally.

Frightened by the flames flying towards them, the Bone Breaker Gorillas suddenly stopped their movements. But when they did, even before the fire hit them, Xiao Ning passed through the flame, not caring about getting burned, and with the fragment in his left hand, struck the 7th Layer one.

The monster fell, convulsing on the ground. The discharge it received was too strong to withstand. However, it wasn't enough to kill it. And Xiao Ning, knowing the limits of his technique, pierced the creature's heart with the tip of the spear he held in his other hand.

Having its heart pierced, the Bone Breaker Gorilla couldn't react and died right there. Xiao Ning, with no time to celebrate, tried to pull the spear fragment, but before he could, another Gorilla jumped on him, jaw open, showing its yellow teeth, trying to tear a piece off him.

Xiao Ning ducked and rolled to the side, managing to escape, but the best weapon he had to exterminate the monsters remained stuck in the body of the last one he killed. And getting it back wouldn't be easy, because at that moment, there were six bloodthirsty beasts coming his way.

"Damn it!" he cursed, his situation worsening by the second.

If he knew he would face such a circumstance, he would have practiced a few more Combat Techniques or advanced to the second form of the Dragon's Breath. That's it! When he returned to Uncle Chang's house, he would definitely train some Combat Techniques. Well, that is if he managed to return. Should he try to escape? No. That was never an option.

So, there was only one choice...

Xiao Ning peeked at the spear fragment stuck in the chest of the dead Bone Breaker Gorilla, and then looked at the others that were heading towards him. Then, he held the only part of the fragment in his possession as if it were a baton. It was all or nothing. He could no longer afford to be careless.

  Stolen story; please report.

The first Gorilla ran up to him, using its feet and hands. When it got close, it swung its arms from top to bottom, trying to nail him to the ground. Unlike the other times, Xiao Ning didn't jump back or try to run, he just stood in the same place, and when those gigantic hands approached, he spun his body, thus managing to dodge by inches.

The Bone Breaker Gorilla's blow passed so close that he could feel the hiss of the wind created by the large arms blow against his face, as well as the creature's body heat. It was a risky maneuver, but worth the risk. Because at the same moment, while spinning, he launched his arm, holding the baton, against the beast's head.

That spear fragment, used as a baton, couldn't even scratch the fearsome monster. But the electricity from the Electric Palm, together with the Lei Gong Bracelets, immediately numbed its senses, making it fall stiff backward.

Taking advantage of the opening, Xiao Ning ran towards the spear fragment stuck in the dead Gorilla's chest. But then, a second Demonic Beast stood in his way and swung its arms horizontally. Even so, he didn't stop running. When those hairy things got close, he let his body drop and slid across the dusty floor.

While he was still down, a third jumped into the air and tried to crush him with its heavy body. Seeing it falling in his direction, Xiao Ning invoked the Tongue of Fire and threw it at the Gorilla. He then rolled to the side and got up.

The beast, trying to put out the fire burning its skin, completely forgot about the prey, who took advantage of the momentary chaos and threw himself toward the other spear fragment.

But then, two Bone Breaker Gorillas surrounded him. The one on the right, which was closer, opened its jaw, and thick drool ran from its mouth, which released a putrid smell, making the nostrils of anyone who smelled the stench contract. And the one on the left swung a giant rock it had found somewhere.

Xiao Ning, in an act that seemed more like desperation, threw his arm against the mouth of the monster trying to tear off a piece of him. Although the strength of this type of Demonic Beast lies in the power of its limbs, its fangs were capable of tearing a human apart without problems.

However, when the Bone Breaker Gorilla's mouth was about to close, Xiao Ning grabbed its teeth and pushed its jaw down, as he invoked the Electric Palm. The monster, with its senses numbed, started to collapse. But Ning pulled it by the chin and threw it against the other Gorilla, which was hammering the rock in his direction.

The electrocuted monster, whose strength was at the 4th Layer of the Mundane Realm, had its head crushed. And, Xiao Ning finally managed to reach the other spear fragment, which contained the Rock Steel tip. And with a pull, he ripped it from the dead beast's chest.

Now that he had recovered his best chance of killing the Bone Breaker Gorillas, it was time to counterattack.

When Xiao Ning heard that strange roar, echoing amidst the rustling of the leaves, he automatically raised his head and looked in a certain direction. In the distance, it was possible to see the tree branches being shaken. Something big was approaching and fast.
