Rescue the princess, Part 1 - Breaking In

The prison of Mysore was located in Asur kingdom, on the southern banks of Kaveri river. It was considered as one of the most secure prison in Asur Kingdom. Many high ranked individuals, traders or common people alike, who broke the law in one way or another, found their way here, waiting for their final judgement.

Many of the feared nobilities and ruthless traders are kept here due to its reputation of being a fortress.

The prison stood under relentless guard, with more than 100 guards stationed along the perimeter, working in two shifts. Any trespassers were executed on sight. Each cell had its designated guard, assigned to keep a keen eye on prisoner's activities.

The prison was secured from all four directions by tall walls, each wall had a huge gong, which tolled loud enough to alert entire prison. A platoon of 10-20 guards patrolled the outer wall, using its height to keep a watch on any sign on intrusion.

But in last few weeks, the prison raised its security to accommodate a royalty by doubling the numbers of the guards in each shift.

It was foggy tonight, fog was so thick that the guards could only see things which were an arm's distance away.

A guard was patrolling the northern wall of the prison when he saw a small anchor stuck in an arrow slit, a rope was attached to the anchor whose other end was lost in the dense fog.

It took him a few moments to process the situation, but when his senses ticked, he started running towards the gong. The guard soon dropped dead, twin dagger wounds were glistening on his back. Yakshini pushed the dead guard from the wall and watched until the falling body disappeared in thick fog. A distant thud soon followed.

The Jailor's office was on the top floor of northern wing. It had tiny balcony with few flowerpots. Yakshini attached the small anchor to the arrow head and tied one end of rope to tail of anchor. She shot the arrow, which followed an arc and landed on the railing of balcony. Yakshini checked the grip of the rope and tied other end to the lamp post mounted atop the wall. Then she used her bow as a handle and glided towards the jailor's office. Even while on the top floor, the building's height was still less than the outer wall, making Yakshini's gliding a descend.

Yakshini landed on the balcony with light steps and quickly retrieved the arrow and rope. Then she pulled out a lock picking tool from her belt's pocket but to her surprise the door was already open. Cautiously, she peeked inside the office but found nobody other than jailor himself, who was snoring loudly with his head on the desk.

Yakshini went through the catalog, which was lying open on jailor's work desk. It mentioned that princess was imprisoned in the cell on second floor of the same wing. Yakshini memorized the cell number and calculated where that cell will be. Yakshini peeked through the office's door and found two guards guarding the door, now she has to take the longer route. Yakshini again came out in the balcony and started climbing towards the roof.

Instead of a flat terrace, buildings in this prison had slanted roofs covered with roof tiles. The northern wing was so close to the northern wall that on a clear night one could have easily seen the intruder running on the roof, but tonight was nowhere near clear and Yakshini's soot black cape was a good camouflage in darkness. Yakshini ran across the roof, calculating the distance between her and the room number. When she arrived on the calculated spot, she tied one end of the rope to drain pipe and wrapped other end around her waist.

Then she descended cautiously till she reached second floor and peeked through the railings of the window.

A man was reading something on his bed.

A disappointed groan escaped Yakshini's breath. A dim glow was flickering through the window on her left.

'Could that be the cell?', she thought, but that cell was far beyond her reach. Her only option was now to go on the roof again and start her descend from new spot.

'There is no time for that, I must escape with princess before the fog wanes out', Yakshini thought.

An idea soon clicked in her mind.

She stood upright, pressing her sole against the wall, her body was now facing the window on her left.

'But the rope is not long enough', a doubt rose in her mind.

Yakshini took a few steps back and started running towards the window, when she gained enough momentum, she took a leap. In air, she let the swinging motion control her path. When she reached a good enough point, she untied the rope knot mid swing which threw her away on a tangential trajectory. Yakshini saw the window's railings getting in reach.

Yakshini's calculations worked this time as she grabbed window's railing to stop her fall. The sudden jerk sent a jolt of pain throughout her torso, but she ignored that. She tried to grip her foot, a loose stone fell into the darkness below.

Yakshini peeked through the window again, this time she saw a teenage girl sleeping on her bed. A dimmed nightlamp was flickering on the desk beside her bed. Yakshini observed that the sleeping girl had same face as queen Sachi, if she was still a teenager.

Satisfied with the target, Yakshini took out a glass tube containing an acid. She broke the neck of the tube and poured it on the joints of the railings. The iron joints melted away in no time. Yakshini removed the railings and entered the room with feather steps.

Yakshini took a chair and placed it beside Devsena's bed. She gently pressed her palms on Devsena's mouth to muffle the screams and then woke her up.

Devsena opened her eyes and saw an emerald eyed hooded figure sitting beside her on a chair, she tried to scream in terror but hand on her mouth didn't allow her to do that. She tried her best to scream but more she struggled, more tightly the palm got pressed against her mouth.

With the free hand, Yakshini lowered the hood.

"Don't shout, I came here to take you to your mother!", whispered Yakshini.

Devsena's eyes still showed a shade of disbelief.

Yakshini pulled a golden bracelet, studded with diamonds and rubies, from her waist pouch.

"Your mother told me to show this to you", whispered Yakshini again, her palms were still covering Devsena's mouth.

Devsena took the bracelet and observed it for a few seconds, then she looked at Yakshini again.

In Devsena's eyes, Yakshini now could see minor glimpses of trust along with disbelief.

"I am going to free your mouth now, do not shout. Understood?", questioned Yakshini, still whispering.

  Devsena nodded.

Yakshini slowly removed her palm, with each move she was making sure that no screaming attempts were made .

Devsena now sat on her bed, looking at this strange woman who was claiming to be her savior.

A few moments of silence passed, nobody moved a muscle.

At last, Yakshini stood up from her chair, Devsena's eyes followed her every movement.

"Let's get you out of here", Yakshini said finally, Devsena could see the emerald eyes filled with determination.
