Bombs!

Everybody ran to take their places. The honey badgers ran to the cannons. Each cannon would have one badger aiming it and two other badgers feeding it carrots. The first cannon was positioned on the road the fake infirmary had been on. This had Harvey and Harold as the feeders and Millicent as the aimer. She was Sarge’s wife and had plenty of experience in war tactics. Badgers were not exactly the type of animal you could push around. The second cannon was placed on a hill, overlooking one of the forest gardens. This one was particularly important because all of the babies and children of the good creatures were being transported up on that hill to a nice, big cave for safety and protection. The badgers running that cannon were Hildegard, Jehosaphat and Jonathan. The third cannon was placed where the three badgers could keep the ford in the river in view. This was manned by Steve, Tim and Gary. They were anxious to see if the dark creatures would use the ford to access the good creatures’ part of the forest.

Lester had almost reached the area where Nogdorf was when he realized he had forgotten the bread bag of the blessed basil for the basilisk breath. He hopped like mad back to his burrow to get it. The birds ate plenty of seeds so their poop ammunition was full. They were divided up into three regiments by Nogdorf and stationed near the cannons until they received notice to fly.

Bobby Bear came sauntering into the dark creatures’ camp with ten other bears and they were all grumbling about the hot day, as they had just come from the mountains where it was ten degrees cooler. Juniper wolf and wolfpack were actually in a good mood, after eating the nice meal Lucent had prepared for them. Lucent took full advantage of their good mood and sent them in three directions. They would be testing the waters and, if they survived the first attack, be reporting back to Lucent about what the dark creatures should expect to face. Each of the wolves in the wolfpack carried a rapier in his or her mouth, as they ran to the good creatures. Lucent couldn’t wait another minute. He pushed the button on the detonator and the first bomb went off, taking out Sammy and Mason Squirrel’s treehouse! The huge tree fell down across the road, narrowly missing Margarite Squirrel’s house! The rats below were not so fortunate. Lucent had failed to tell them he was exploding the bomb and several of them had gone back into the tunnel to finish up their business. The Rifferty Rat family lost two rats and another went soaring thru the air, head over heels. Nobody recognized who this was because he was not identifiable.

Jacob Mole came running up to Nogdorf and said, “Excuse me Mr. Nogdorf, we have a problem. I didn’t know until now, but I heard digging for days and now I know what it was. Those good-fur-nuthings dug tunnels and put bombs in them. Nogdorf thanked him and wondered how he would be able to find the places the other bombs had been placed.

The wolves were now running full speed. The ones who ran to the ford were just boarding the ferry raft to get to the other side of the river when the badgers caught sight of them and Gary said, “Load the cannon. Now.” As fast as Tim could put a carrot into the cannon, it shot through the air. The first carrot landed in the river and Steve’s hit the raft, but the badgers got better at aiming and the next one hit Juniper right on the nose and knocked her plumb out. The three other wolves realized what was happening, but couldn’t get off of the raft unless they jumped into the deep water, so, despite moving around a lot on the raft, one received a carrot deep in the skull, one in his side and the other one hid behind the other wolves. He made it to the other side of the river and began his hunt for the good creatures.
