Chapter 24: Looting the Deep
The sound of the team’s footsteps echoed in the damp, narrow tunnels as they made their way deeper into the submerged labyrinth of the Mandaue Subway system. The pulse of the Sub-Core still hummed in the air, but there was no time to waste. They had completed the first part of their mission: securing the Sub-Core’s energy and stabilizing the unstable power grid. But Adrian knew that the real treasure was still ahead of them—the deeper, hidden secrets beneath the flooded city.
“We’re getting close,” Sarah said, adjusting her device, her voice tense as she scanned the readings. “I’m picking up strong energy signatures. There’s something here—something valuable.”
Adrian’s mind raced. The team had already faced enough dangers in the tunnels, from the Aswang Eel to the boiling waters that tested their limits. But Sarah’s words signaled something else—something far more critical than just survival. The key to their future lay deeper within these ruins, in the form of Aether-Steel, the rare material needed to complete their Aether-Skiff.
“We need to find it,” Adrian said, his voice steady. “If we’re going to build the Skiff, we need to get this material. Let’s move fast.”
Mike cracked his knuckles, always ready for action. “Aether-Steel? Sounds like a good reason to keep going.”
Eva, who had been quiet since the last fight with the Aswang Eel, was now more focused than ever. She knew the importance of this mission—Aether-Steel was a rare resource that could help them secure the tools needed to navigate the System’s shifting forces. But it wasn’t just about getting the material—it was about securing their future.
They pressed forward, the pressure of the deep tunnels increasing as they moved closer to their destination. The water level rose higher, now up to their knees, the temperature still uncomfortably hot. The environmental suits they wore kept them safe, but the exhaustion was starting to weigh on them.
“We’re not far,” Sarah said, her voice filled with quiet excitement. “There’s a submerged vault ahead. It’s massive, buried beneath the wreckage. The energy readings are coming from inside.”
Adrian’s pulse quickened. A vault buried deep beneath the subway system could mean they were on the verge of a monumental discovery. He signaled for the team to follow, and they pushed forward with renewed determination.
The deeper they went, the more unstable the environment became. The tunnels seemed to grow narrower, the walls closing in. Adrian’s mind was focused on the vault ahead. This was the key to unlocking their future—the Aether-Steel would allow them to complete the Aether-Skiff and give them the mobility they needed to traverse the System’s broken world.
Finally, they reached the entrance to the vault. The door was massive, made of thick steel and partially covered by debris. It had once been a secure storage facility, but now it was just another relic of the world that had crumbled beneath the weight of the Cosmic Tides.
Sarah pulled up a scan on her device. “There’s a lock—old-school, but it’s still active. Give me a moment.”
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
Adrian watched as Sarah worked, her fingers moving quickly over the interface, her concentration absolute. The door groaned as it slowly began to open, revealing the dark interior of the vault.
A sudden sense of awe struck Adrian as the door fully opened, revealing the treasure hidden within. The vault was lined with shelves, each one holding gleaming chunks of Aether-Steel. The material glowed faintly, casting an ethereal light across the vault’s interior. It was like nothing Adrian had ever seen before. It was heavier than steel, and yet it shimmered with an almost otherworldly quality.
“This is it,” Adrian said quietly, his voice filled with reverence. “This is what we need.”
Sarah’s eyes shone with excitement as she took in the sight. “This is more than enough Aether-Steel to finish the Aether-Skiff. We could use this material to reinforce the hull, make it impervious to the System’s attacks.”
Mike grinned, his eyes gleaming with the thought of a successful mission. “So, we’re rich now, huh? Well, rich in Aether-Steel, anyway.”
Eva stepped forward, her gaze lingering on the glowing material. “But it’s not just about the Skiff. This material could change everything. We can use it to build better equipment, armor, tools. It could give us the edge we need.”
Adrian nodded. “It’s not just about surviving—it’s about rebuilding. This is the foundation we need to start building something bigger.”
But before anyone could take another step forward, a deep rumble shook the floor beneath them, and the vault door slammed shut, trapping them inside.
“What the hell?” Mike shouted, turning toward Sarah. “Did you trigger something?”
Sarah’s eyes widened as she frantically checked her device. “No. The lock is still secure. But... something’s wrong. The energy in the vault is spiking.”
Adrian’s instincts flared. "We’re not alone."
Just as he finished speaking, the water in the vault began to churn violently. The glow from the Aether-Steel flickered, casting long, ominous shadows. From the depths of the vault, something massive stirred. The ground trembled again, and a monstrous shape slowly rose from the flooded depths of the vault.
A creature, unlike any Aswang they had encountered before, emerged. It had a sleek, serpentine body, covered in dark, chitinous armor. Its glowing yellow eyes locked onto them, its massive jaws snapping open as it hissed, revealing rows of jagged, serrated teeth.
It was an Aswang—mutated by the deep corruption of the System. But this was no ordinary Aswang. It had adapted, evolving into something more deadly, more intelligent. It was a mini-boss—a guardian of the vault, designed to protect its treasures.
The creature lunged forward with terrifying speed, its massive tail whipping through the air and sending debris flying. Mike barely had time to react, ducking under the creature’s strike.
“Get back!” Adrian shouted, raising his hand to manipulate the gravity around the creature. But it was resistant to his control, its body too powerful to bend so easily.
The Aswang’s tail struck the ground with a deafening thud, and Adrian realized the full scale of their situation. This was no regular fight. They were facing an evolved creature, one that was built to protect the very thing they had come to find.
“Eva!” Adrian shouted. “We need to stop it now!”
Eva stepped forward, her hands glowing with intense radiant light. She focused all of her energy into a concentrated burst, the light radiating from her hands in brilliant streams. The creature howled in agony as the radiation burned away its corrupted form, but the creature wasn’t done yet. It continued to thrash in the water, growing more aggressive as it adapted to the damage.
“We need to finish this!” Sarah yelled, her device beeping loudly. “It’s drawing energy from the vault! It won’t stop until we defeat it!”
Adrian’s mind raced. He needed to act quickly. The creature was too powerful for them to defeat with brute force alone.
"Mike, hold it still!" Adrian commanded.
Mike charged forward, using his brute strength to grapple with the creature’s tail, trying to pin it down. Eva, seeing the opening, released another burst of radiant energy, focusing it on the creature’s vulnerable underbelly. The light burned through the creature's armor, and with a final, deafening screech, the Aswang collapsed, its body disintegrating into the boiling water.
The vault was silent once again, save for the gentle bubbling of the water.
Adrian stood panting, his heart still racing. “We’ve done it. But we’re not out yet.”
The Aether-Steel was now theirs, but Adrian knew that with every victory came greater danger. They had just scratched the surface of what the System had to offer, and it wasn’t going to make it easy for them to succeed.
Sarah walked forward, looking at the pile of Aether-Steel with a mixture of awe and relief. “We’ve got what we came for. Let’s get back and finish the Skiff. But this fight... it’s just the beginning.”
Adrian gave a grim nod, his mind already calculating their next steps. "Let’s get out of here. The next phase of this war is about to begin."
The Aether-Vanguard was one step closer to completing their mission, but Adrian knew that the real challenge lay ahead. The System was still evolving, and so were they.
