Inside the blackblade

Ren stopped beneath an ancient oak.

Its roots twisted deep into the earth, thicker than stone, its branches stretching wide as if shielding the land beneath it. The wind whispered through its leaves, yet the world felt unnaturally still. Ren leaned against the trunk, his breathing heavy, his body finally giving in to exhaustion.

The cursed mark at the back of his neck burned.

  Not violently.

  Calling.

  Ren’s vision blurred.

  The forest faded.

  Darkness swallowed everything.

  ---

He stood in an endless void.

No ground. No sky. No direction.

  Then steel rang.

  Ren barely moved in time.

A blade cut through the space where his head had been a moment before. He stumbled back, heart pounding, eyes wide.

Emma no Kage stood before him.

  Not flickering. Not incomplete.

  Whole.

“You hesitate,” the demon said calmly, circling him. “That is why you lose.”

Ren raised his fists instinctively. “This isn’t real.”

Emma no Kage smiled. “Does pain feel unreal?”

  He vanished.

Ren screamed as a blade tore across his side. Blood spilled freely, floating like crimson mist in the void. Ren dropped to one knee, clutching the wound, gasping.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Emma no Kage reappeared behind him and kicked him forward. Ren hit the unseen ground hard, pain exploding through his ribs.

“You fight as if you fear yourself,” Emma no Kage said. “That weakness will kill you.”

Ren pushed himself up, trembling. “I won’t become you.”

The demon tilted his head. “You already have.”

Emma no Kage attacked again—faster, sharper, relentless. Ren barely blocked a strike before another cut opened his shoulder. He stumbled, vision blurring, blood soaking his torn clothes.

  Ren fell.

  Panting.

  Bleeding.

Emma no Kage stood over him, blade resting casually on his shoulder.

“You see?” the demon said softly. “You resist what you are.”

Ren clenched his teeth. “I resist *you*.”

Emma no Kage laughed. “Then stand.”

  Ren forced himself up.

His body screamed in protest. His legs shook. His hands trembled. Yet something deeper stirred—anger, humiliation, rage.

  No.

  Resolve.

  Ren exhaled slowly.

  “Haraka,” he whispered.

  The world shattered.

His senses exploded outward. Every movement slowed. Every sound sharpened. Emma no Kage’s aura burned bright and clear, each flicker of motion traced perfectly in Ren’s mind.

  Lightning coursed through his veins.

  Emma no Kage struck.

  Ren vanished.

In an instant, Ren reappeared at the demon’s flank, fist driving into his ribs. Emma no Kage staggered back, eyes widening—not in pain, but delight.

“So you finally stop thinking,” the demon said.

Ren attacked again—faster than before. His strikes were precise, vicious, fueled by raw instinct rather than hesitation. Each blow landed with brutal efficiency, driving Emma no Kage backward.

For the first time, the demon blocked.

  Steel clashed.

“You learn quickly,” Emma no Kage said, parrying a strike aimed at his throat. “Because you were born to.”

Ren snarled and pressed harder. “Shut up!”

They clashed again and again, lightning-fast movements tearing through the void. Ren’s wounds still burned, blood trailing behind him, but he didn’t slow. Pain sharpened him.

  Emma no Kage grinned.

“You feel it now,” he said. “The joy of power without restraint.”

  Ren froze mid-strike.

“No,” he said through clenched teeth. “I feel control.”

Emma no Kage leaned in close. “Liar.”

Ren screamed and slammed his head into the demon’s face. Emma no Kage laughed as they separated, wiping blood from his mouth—his own.

They stood facing each other, both breathing heavily.

“You hate them,” Emma no Kage said. “The elders. The clans. The blade law.”

Ren’s fists shook. “I hate what they did.”

“And what they turned you into.”

  Ren said nothing.

Emma no Kage stepped closer. “You and I were both betrayed. Both sealed. Both feared for refusing to bow.”

Ren’s aura surged violently, tearing the void apart in cracks of light and shadow.

“I am not you,” Ren shouted.

Emma no Kage spread his arms. “Then why does the blade answer you?”

Ren’s clothes ripped under the pressure of his aura, torn by unseen force. Blood dripped from his wounds, yet he stood taller now, eyes blazing.

  “I won’t become a monster,” Ren said.

Emma no Kage’s smile widened. “Neither did I.”

  Silence fell.

  Ren took a step forward.

  Then another.

His rage rolled off him in waves—raw, focused, undeniable. Each step sent tremors through the void. His wounds no longer slowed him. His fear had burned away.

  Emma no Kage’s laughter echoed.

“Yes,” the demon said, eyes glowing with excitement. “Come.”

Ren stopped inches away from him.

His body trembled—not from fear, but from restraint. Blood dripped from his torn clothes, staining the unseen ground beneath them. His breathing was slow now, controlled, deliberate.

“I hate that I understand you,” Ren said quietly. “I hate that part of me agrees.”

Emma no Kage leaned closer, his presence pressing down like a mountain. “Then stop lying to yourself.”

The cursed mark burned hotter than ever.

  Ren closed his eyes.

Memories flooded him—Akari’s scream, the elders’ judgment, the blade breaking, the world turning against him for choosing mercy. Rage and resolve intertwined, inseparable.

When Ren opened his eyes, they burned with a steady, terrifying clarity.

“I accept,” he said, voice low and unwavering, “that we are alike.”

Emma no Kage’s smile widened, sharp and satisfied.

  “Yes,” he whispered. “Now walk.”

Ren’s clothes tore further as his aura surged, raw and unrestrained. Power rolled off him in crushing waves, the void around them trembling in response. His wounds no longer slowed him. His hesitation was gone.

Step by step, Ren walked toward Emma no Kage.

  Not as prey.

  Not as a victim.

But as something that could stand before him.

  Emma no Kage laughed—excited, exhilarated.

The fight was only just beginning.
