Chapter 03

"Looks like more than one person died here," Greg said, kneeling down.

The whole place was almost covered with moss, and if he had come here in two to three months, he wouldn't be able to find these bones anymore. The local flora and fauna had almost taken over the place where these knights or adventurers died.

And yes, these people were not normal citizens, because they were wearing armor and carrying weapons. It was just too bad the armor between the three had fused with their remains and the swords and daggers they were carrying had rusted with time.

One of the spears was also broken and nothing seemed all that useful here. But Greg kept digging through the moss and soon found a wet bag that was also rotting.

He tried to pick it up and the thing broke from the middle and its contents spilled out. Inside was some kind of food these people were carrying, and it had spoiled a long, long time ago.

Greg also found some kind of parchment that was made from animal skin that somehow had survived, but he didn't immediately pick it up, but instead spread the thing slowly to see what was inside.

The old thing turned out to be a map, or it should be called an incomplete map, because it looks like these dead adventurers were the ones that were mapping this cavern. It had some text Greg could not read and also showed a way to get out.

Apparently, Greg was heading away from the exit, and if he kept going, he’d eventually wander into the uncharted areas these people never get to see.

Greg searched the bag more and went through all the wet mush that was probably something important once, but he found nothing useful. He hoped to find some kind of firestarter or something he could use, but when he didn't, he decided to climb the walls.

Greg had two objectives: the first one was to check his climbing ability he got from eating spider cores, and the second was to see what was ahead. Maybe from a higher place he could find what killed these people or just get an idea of where this cavern led to.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

So he went to the closest corner and scaled the wall. It took him less than twenty minutes to reach the vantage point where he found a good spot to hang from.

He was constantly using the strength he got from eating all those centipedes to pull his weight up, and even after all that work, he didn't feel much tired. His body had truly evolved into something better than when he got here, but Greg was more focused on seeing what was ahead.

And he didn't see anything that looked scary or that could take the lives of some armed, experienced men. There were only these pale stones in the distance that raised his suspicion.

Greg decided to wait and watch and continued to hang until one of the stones moved. Soon it became very clear that the pale, almost transparent stones were some kind of scorpion-like creatures that slept by rolling their bodies into a stone-like shape.

And there were hundreds of these creatures in the later part of the cavern, and it was probably their lair.

"They are probably poisonous too," Greg guessed and decided to come down.

He had been hanging here for some time now and his arms were starting to strain from carrying all that weight. When he was at the floor again and back to the bones, he said a quick prayer to the people that had died here and started to go back.

Along the way, he avoided fighting any more creatures because he was more focused on the people that had died here. He could already guess he was under a huge forest, and the map only showed small parts of it.

Also, this is some secluded land or some far away place that not many people visit. The existence of humans alone is very interesting, but now that Greg was no longer a human, he could not just go and live with them.

"No, I would be immediately hunted down and killed," he said, shaking his head.

Greg was already back at the bubbling water place where he woke up, and he decided to pack up and walk in the direction that was marked as the exit on the map.

Along the way, he fought some more of the spiders, but they were easier to deal with because the more he moved towards the outside, the weaker the beasts became.

Finally, he heard the sound of running water and he knew he was close to the waterfall mentioned as the entrance to this cavern. The more he moved in this direction, the smaller the cavern became, and at one point, it was just about the size for a normal human to freely walk through.

Greg was smaller than a normal human and was close to the height of a modern-day teenager, so he ran into no problems. Soon the cave opened up and the entrance was just behind a giant waterfall.

Greg circled around the place and made his way out to the evergreen forest waiting for him. It was nighttime already, and the red moon was shining on all those massive trees with a pale light.

The surroundings were calm, and only noises from small creatures one would expect in a forest like this were present. Greg didn't want to stay down here and immediately found a large tree that he climbed and made his way to the top branches.

There, he looked around and found some light in the distance. Actually, there were more lights in different directions, and he just picked the closest one to scout out tomorrow.

For today, though, he ate from his dried meat supply and later made a bed using leaves and branches from the same tree and slept the whole night.
