Chapter 22: The Exam of Silence

A few days later — Exam Day.

The first light of dawn spread across the city sky. A faint chill lingered in the air, and the leaves of the trees swayed gently. From afar came the sounds of car horns and tires on the road, carrying with them a strange tension beneath it all.

  Today was Exam Day.

The kind of day where even breathing felt heavy. In front of the school’s main gate, cars began to arrive one after another — black, white, blue — students filling out of them.

Some stepped out and immediately opened their books with tense faces, while others made last-minute revisions inside the car before getting down.

Everyone carried fear in different ways — some openly, some pretending it didn’t exist.

As students got out, they walked in groups toward the corridor. The girls’ long skirts and the boys’ blazers swayed in the breeze, and the sound of shoes echoed sharply across the floor.

Some laughed and chatted with friends, while others stayed completely silent, the nervousness clearly visible in their eyes.

A few students walked in holding coffee cups — their final attempt to stay awake. Sleep-deprived minds clung desperately to memory. Others kept asking each other over and over again:—“Hey, did you study that chapter?”

The entire atmosphere was filled with a quiet tension, yet mixed with excitement. Sunlight streamed in through the windows, casting long shadows across the floor. One by one, all the students entered their classes and sat at their assigned seats.

Each step felt like walking into judgment. The moment the last student entered, within a 3-kilometer radius of the school, every sound was silenced. No car horns, no construction noise, not even the chatter of people outside. For today, this school seemed truly different from all the others.

As if the world itself respected the exam. Inside, most of the students looked worried — and even many of the teachers carried the same expression.

But Rayn and Yuqeen showed no signs of worry on their faces. Mayya and Haarun looked more excited than nervous. And Saamyn, as always, sat calmly, while Ymraan looked completely relaxed, as if the exam meant nothing to him.

Calmness itself felt unnatural in such a room. After a while, the teacher handed out the exam papers and glanced at his wristwatch.

The entire class was silent — so silent that the only sound was the ticking of the teacher’s watch. The silence pressed against their ears. At exactly 9 o’clock, the teacher announced:— “Time starts.”

Time began hunting everyone. As soon as he said it, all the students quickly began writing. The teacher stood in one place silently, as though he too wasn’t allowed to make a sound.

The only noises in the room were the ticking of the watch, the scratching of pens, and the sound of everyone’s breathing. Every second felt loud.

In another classroom, Sa’ut, Hinnah, and Riyy were also scribbling furiously on their papers. Looking at Riyy, it didn’t seem like he was a president anymore, but just an ordinary student.

Similarly, Nazar too looked nothing like a president today — just another student taking an exam. Meanwhile, twenty minutes later, Saamyn spoke in a calm voice:— “Sir, paper.”

The words sliced through the silence. The teacher walked over to him and handed him an extra sheet. But upon seeing it, Saamyn said in a deep voice:— “I don’t want a loose sheet. I want my next exam paper.”

Shock rippled across the room. The entire class was stunned — even the teacher. Until now, no one had ever completed a paper so quickly.

Yet, despite the shock, no one paid him much attention. Everyone knew this wasn’t the time to be distracted.

The teacher gave Saamyn the next exam paper. And as he did, Ymraan spoke up in a chilled-out tone:— “Next exam paper for me too.”

Disbelief replaced fear. The teacher was stunned again — but without wasting time, he handed Ymraan the paper as well.

The same routine continued. Everyone wrote their exams in complete silence. Even in the air-conditioned classrooms, many students began to sweat, while some could only stare at their papers, unable to write. Pressure crushed even the confident ones.

Meanwhile, the principal quietly sat at his desk in the head office — no sounds, no activity. After another twenty minutes, Saamyn calmly spoke up:— “Next exam paper.”

Hearing this, everyone’s hands froze for a moment. Even the principal’s eyes widened in surprise. Something abnormal was unfolding.

As the teacher went to hand Saamyn the next exam paper, Ymraan immediately spoke in a chilled tone:— “Next exam paper for me too.”

Everyone was stunned, but no one stopped writing.

Ymraan glanced at Saamyn and, with a mischievous smile mixed with attitude, thought to himself:— ‘I know, I’ll never be able to outshine you in life. But I can stay by your side forever.”

Loyalty burned brighter than pride. Saamyn and Ymraan resumed writing. Within the next ten minutes, Yuqeen, Mayya, Rayn, and Haarun each requested their next exam papers one by one.

A quiet chain reaction had begun. Soon, a full hour had passed since the start of the exam. After the complete hour, Saamyn calmly announced:— “Exam completed.”

Right after Saamyn, Ymraan also said:— “Exam completed.”

The room froze. This time, it was as if everyone’s hands froze in unison, and all eyes shifted toward Saamyn and Ymraan.

No one could understand how the two of them managed to finish the exam so quickly. Some even started thinking that maybe they hadn’t written their answers properly.

For a few moments, almost everyone stopped writing. Seeing everyone staring, Jealousy, doubt, and awe collided.

Ymraan spoke in his usual chilled, confident tone:— “Don’t look at us — focus on completing your own papers. Maybe you’ll end up with a few extra marks.”

His tone carried invisible blades. Hearing Ymraan’s words, everyone realized they didn’t have time to waste. So, they quickly turned their attention back to their own papers, ignoring Saamyn and Ymraan.

While writing, Rayn thought to himself:— “I know Saamyn has a vast amount of knowledge, but finishing Lumynara High’s exams this fast is almost impossible. And on top of that, Ymraan also completed his papers.”

Meanwhile, Haarun, just like Rayn, was thinking while writing:— “How did they complete three exams within just one hour? And that too, giving exactly twenty minutes to each… how is that even possible?”

Logic failed where they stood. After finishing their papers, Saamyn and Ymraan remained seated in silence. Because until the exam time officially ended, they weren’t allowed to leave the classroom.

Because an hour had passed, Sir began collecting the first exam papers from everyone and handed out the second exam papers.

This continued until 12 PM, when the first session ended and the lunch break began.

As soon as lunch break started, a crowd of students suddenly surrounded Saamyn and Ymraan. Expressions of surprise and curiosity mixed on everyone’s faces — some looked on in disbelief, while others were filled with admiration.

Attention clung to them like gravity. A boy (Student-A) asked in astonishment:— “You didn’t skip a single question on the exam?”

Immediately, a girl (Student-B) beside him spoke sharply:— “How did you complete such a huge paper in just 20 minutes?”

Another boy furrowed his brow and asked:— “Did you already know the questions beforehand?”

A short-statured girl spoke in a calm yet suspicious tone:— “Did Sir give you special lessons?”

Student-C, a boy, chuckled lightly and joked:— “You wrote it all, right? You didn’t just submit a blank paper?”

A sweet feminine voice from the crowd asked:— “How is your handwriting still readable even when you write so fast?”

Another boy, frustrated, ran his hands through his hair:— “We didn't even finish in an hour, and you completed it in 20 minutes?”

A girl asked in a calm but curious tone:— “Did you plan everything in advance?”

After everyone had spoken, Saamyn didn’t answer anyone but turned to Ymraan and said in a calm voice:— “Ymraan… now I have freed you from the bond of my words.”

A seal quietly broke. Curiosity turned aggressive. Hearing this, Ymraan’s eyes lit up with a strange joy, and a dark, powerful smile spread across his face — as if no one had ever seen his true form before.

Something dangerous surfaced. Rayn, Yuqeen, Haarun, and Mayya stood silently on one side of the classroom, watching everything unfold.

Before any student could speak, Ymraan lifted his head and, in a deep, attitude-filled voice, said:— “Everyone, will you give way, or should I make my own path?”

Threat hung in the air. Hearing this, a random student stepped right in front of them, frowning, and said:— “You’re not going anywhere without answering us.”

Ymraan let out a small laugh, stepped forward, and in a deep, commanding voice said:— “Hey, idiot! If your honor matters to you, step aside now, or you’ll end up carrying it yourself while running away.”

No one wanted to be next. Fear spreads faster than words. Seeing Ymraan speak in such a terrifying manner, everyone froze in fear. Gradually, the students stepped aside to make way.

Watching this, many students felt their hearts race from just these few words, and those whom Ymraan had addressed seemed as if they had glimpsed death itself.

Saamyn and Ymraan walked out of the classroom at a slow pace, right in front of everyone. Seeing this, Rayn, Yuqeen, Mayya, and Haarun quickly followed them outside.

They all headed toward the cafeteria. As always, Saamyn remained calm, while Ymraan stayed completely chill — but this time, Ymraan’s aura felt sharper than ever.

Inside the cafeteria, they quietly sat down at a table, while Ymraan went off to order food. Whispers followed them inside. Many students in the cafeteria had their eyes fixed on Saamyn and Ymraan.

Noticing everyone staring at Saamyn, Haarun thought to himself:— “It’s impossible for people not to notice Saamyn.”

Saamyn had become unavoidable. With that thought, Haarun also went to place an order, while the other three sat down beside Saamyn.

Standing next to Ymraan, Haarun asked in a voice full of disbelief:— “Saamyn has a lot of knowledge, but Ymraan… how did you write so fast?”

Ymraan answered with a smirk and a playful tone:— “I just handed in blank papers.”

A lie said too smoothly. Haarun gave a fake laugh and said:— “What? Blank papers?”

After that, Haarun didn’t ask Ymraan anything else. Once they were done ordering, both of them joined the others at the table. Rayn then calmly asked Saamyn:— “Saamyn, did you actually answer all the questions?”

Saamyn looked at Rayn with calm eyes and replied:— “Hm… all of them.”

Before Rayn could say anything else, Mayya spoke up in a polite tone:— “If you really did, then you should know… you two just broke President Nazar aev Kurgaan’s record. His top speed was 36 minutes, and he always came out on top.”

History shifted quietly. Saamyn didn’t reply, only gave a faint smile. After a while of silence, Haarun spoke to Rayn in a joyful tone:— “Forget everything else, first tell me — how was your exam?”

Rayn stayed quiet for a moment, then replied bluntly:— “The others went fine, only math gave me a little trouble.”

Right after Rayn said this, a slang-filled voice burst out:— “What? You had trouble in math? Damn, even lies have a limit!”

Normalcy tried to return. Before Rayn could say anything, he noticed Sa’ut, Hinnah, and Riyy entering the cafeteria through the door, walking straight toward them.

Slowly, everyone’s attention shifted in their direction. Without looking around, Riyy came close and said in a joyful tone:— “Have you guys heard the news? Today I set the 2nd record in writing speed—39 minutes!”

Pride walked in unaware of giants. Hearing this, no one gave any reaction, as if the news was insignificant to them. His pride cracked silently. Riyy quickly realized that nobody was paying him any attention.

After a moment of silence, Riyy asked in a confused voice:— “What’s wrong? Why aren’t you saying anything?”

Something felt wrong. At that, Haarun let out a long sigh and replied:— “Riyy, maybe you haven’t heard the real news yet.”

He already knew this would hurt. Riyy grew a little serious and asked:— “What do you mean? What are you trying to say?”

With a smirk and a voice full of attitude, Haarun replied:— “The news is — Saamyn and Ymraan broke President Nazar’s record. Both of them finished each exam in 20 minutes.”

The truth landed like a blow. The moment those words were spoken, the atmosphere in the cafeteria completely changed. Shock swallowed the room. Everyone’s eyes widened in shock.

Riyy slowly turned to look at Saamyn and stuttered in an astonished voice:— “S-Saamyn… i-is Haarun telling the truth?”

Denial clung to him. Without saying a word, Saamyn simply nodded in confirmation. No drama, No explanation.

From the look on Riyy’s face, it seemed like he still couldn’t bring himself to believe Saamyn’s response. Meanwhile, Ymraan ignored everyone’s words and kept eating quietly.

As if none of it mattered. Looking at Ymraan, Riyy spoke in a voice tinged with jealousy:— “Ymraan, are you just bluffing?”

Insecurity surfaced. Hearing this, Ymraan answered directly in a deep, attitude-filled tone:— “Stay within your limits when you speak.”

A warning, not an insult. Hearing such disrespectful words from Ymraan, everyone’s jaw dropped. Even Rayn, Haarun, and Sa’ut were shocked.

Fear replaced disbelief. After all, Riyy was the president of the Council of Crown and a mid-royal — no one could believe Ymraan would talk to him like that.

In a stunned voice, Haarun said to Ymraan:— “Do you even know who you’re talking to?”

He underestimated the moment. Ymraan looked at Haarun and replied in a sarcastic tone:— “You better stay quiet.”

No respect. No hesitation. Haarun spoke in a straightforward voice:— “Why are you talking like this? Do you think I’m useless?”

Pride shattered completely. Ymraan answered in an ironic tone:— “Exactly. You’re so useless that if I tried to sell you in the market, the buyer would demand money from me instead.”

Hearing such insulting words from Ymraan, Haarun sat in a corner, crying angrily, whispering:— “Even my father has never humiliated me like this…”

Humiliation cuts deeper than anger. Mayya sat beside Haarun with a faint, pale smile, trying to comfort him. Quiet support spoke louder than words.

Meanwhile, Riyy thought that perhaps Ymraan wasn’t in a good mood today — that’s why he was talking like this. So Riyy didn’t say anything further. He chose dignity over conflict.

At that very moment, Saamyn spoke in a serious tone:— “Now, instead of saying anything else, we should finish our meal. After that, the second exam will begin. And as for who has done well, you’ll only know on the result day.”

Authority without force. Saamyn hadn’t said much, but still, his words brought a strange calm over the cafeteria. Tension finally loosened.

Elsewhere, Nazar sat quietly inside his office. A clear seriousness was reflected in his eyes. Suspicion replaced curiosity. Only one question kept circling in Nazar’s mind:— “Saamyn and Ymraan… who exactly are they?”

These boys weren’t normal. As the lunch break ended, a heavy silence once again descended over the entire school. Pressure returned heavier. The clock’s hands slowly approached 12:55.

The Sir was handing out exam papers one by one at each desk. The students turned their papers in silence — some calm, others frowning. As if fate favored them.

When the clock struck exactly 1:00, the Sir stood at the front and said in a cold voice:— “Time starts.”

At that very moment, the entire school seemed frozen again. Within a three-kilometer radius, no sound could be heard — except the ticking of pens, the rustle of turning pages, and the heavy sound of breathing.

Saamyn and Ymraan were just as calm as before. In their eyes, there was neither pressure nor fear. It almost seemed as though they already knew the questions would come.

The other students continued in their own ways. Some bent their heads, writing nonstop. Some paused often to think.

And some hands simply froze midway out of exhaustion. Limits were being tested.

Time kept slipping away — an hour, then two, then three. Finally, when the clock struck 4:00, the Sir stood at the front and announced:— “Time over. Submit your papers.”

Relief and regret collided. Immediately, a muffled unease spread through the hall. Some sighed with relief.

Some wiped the sweat from their brows.

Others handed over their papers with dissatisfaction — as if thinking, “If only I had five more minutes, I could have written so much more.”

A long, heavy day came to an end at Lumynara High. The sun was slowly sinking, casting a golden glow. The leaves swayed in the breeze, while tired faces of students drifted out through the gate. Bodies tired, Minds restless.

  The Next Day, First Session

As dawn broke, the city awoke once again. A light chill hung in the air, with faint traces of mist floating in the sky. One after another, cars stopped in front of the school.

Students stepped out — some with worry in their eyes, others with the same determination as before.

Entering the class, everyone sat in their respective seats. The Sir, just as before, handed out papers one by one. The clock showed 8:59. Everyone was ready — eyes fixed forward, pens poised. The moment the clock struck 9:00, the Sir spoke calmly:— “Time starts.”

Another exam began. Same battlefield, new wounds. Another day, another battle. As soon as they got their papers, everyone bent down to write. The hall filled with the tapping of pens and the rustling of pages.

Saamyn and Ymraan, just like the day before, wrote with calm faces. Their speed was so fast that it seemed they knew the answers even before reading the questions.

Within just twenty minutes, both of them had filled their answer sheets completely. Human limits mocked openly.

But Saamyn and Ymraan didn’t just sit quietly after putting down their pens. Instead, both of them raised their hands together and said:— “Next exam paper, Sir.”

Defiance without arrogance. A ripple of murmurs spread quietly through the classroom. Fear learned their names. Some lifted their heads to look, but quickly bent back down, because everyone knew — they were abnormal.

There was no time to be surprised; everyone’s minds were weighed down by the pressure of their own exams.

The Sir glanced briefly at Saamyn and nodded. In an instant, the silence grew even heavier. Even authority stayed cautious.

Then Ymraan gave a faint smile and, with a hint of excitement, said aloud:— “Me too, Sir! Next paper!”

The pattern was undeniable. The air in the classroom thickened immediately. Those four words seemed to unsettle the others even more. Some flinched, others stopped writing mid-sentence. The Sir said nothing, only looked at them and nodded calmly — while time continued to tick away.

  Second Session

In the afternoon, after the lunch break, the exams began again. The Sir once again distributed the papers. When the clock struck 1:00, he said:— “Time starts.”

Silence descended once again. Only the suffocating sound of breaths and pens scratching on paper remained.

Saamyn and Ymraan once again completed the entire sheet in just twenty minutes. And again, in calm voices, they said:— “Next paper, Sir.”

Meanwhile, the rest were still stuck halfway through. Some even thought — this is no longer human ability. But there was no time to think. Everyone bent over their sheets again.

  End of the Day

After three hours, the Sir announced:— “Time over. Submit your papers.”

One by one, the students submitted their answer sheets. Some sighed with relief, others left with heads bowed.

But deep inside, everyone felt the weight of something invisible — as if some hidden truth was locked inside these two boys.

The corridors of Lumynara High slowly emptied. The sun was setting, the last rays of daylight fading through the leaves.

And in everyone’s mind remained the same question — Who exactly are Saamyn and Ymraan?

The last light of the day faded from Lumynara High — but those two names seemed carved into everyone’s hearts.

  Something irreversible had begun.

The Sir neatly arranged all the papers on the desk and said in a calm voice:— “Today is Saturday. On Monday morning you will receive your results. So from now until then, relax. Don’t stress unnecessarily.”

As soon as his words ended, a soft murmur spread through the hall. Some sat quietly, some smiled faintly with their heads down. Others whispered to one another:— “Let’s see how it turns out this time…”

Fear disguised as curiosity. Without another word, the Sir walked out. The hall slowly emptied, leaving behind only heavy silence — and the anticipation of Monday morning.
