78. Jenny

Jenny did her best to keep Greenie one and Greenie two hidden away from the rescue squad. The way they attacked the other Gilberts made Jenny feel like she might scare the squad if she showed them what she could do. She also didn’t want them to hurt Greenie and mister Gilbert, so for now, she had both of them hidden in her back pockets.

She also did her best to cooperate with her Mommy. Jenny wasn’t entirely sure why Mommy felt so worried and serious, but she decided that she would try really hard to help her not worry.

The rescue squad seemed like good people, but they had hurt the Gilberts and so Jenny was a little unsure if they were good guys or bad guys. They were also carrying Mister chuck with them and he wouldn’t wake up. He felt empty inside too. Maybe the Gilberts hurt Mister Chuck and these guys were rescuing him too. It was really hard to figure out what was going on, but Jenny didn’t ask any questions since adults were always weird and instead of making things make sense, they usually said things like ‘because I said so’.

It was also a little confusing that her Daddy was here, in Mister Chuck’s place. Jenny thought she was supposed to rescue him, but he was locked up here somewhere instead. There was a lot of stuff that didn’t make sense, but that was okay. Jenny was too happy to worry about all the confusing stuff. When Daddy connected with her and Mommy, it was the best kind of surprise. He was much better at super powers than Mommy was since he could talk in her head. Mommy would get better though, she was already able to hold the connection for way longer than before. Jenny squeezed her Mommy’s hand and grinned as they walked down the hall together towards her Daddy. She still couldn’t believe they were on their way to save him. It was so exciting. It felt great that, after all the super hero training, she finally got to save him. It was even better that Mommy was here with her to see how brave she was.

“Almost there,” Jenny said to Daddy through the as they got closer to him

  “Sounds good,” Colin said.

“This is the right door, my doggy should be in here,” Jenny said when they were outside of the correct door, feeling a little bit guilty. It felt weird to lie, but her Mommy had basically begged her to do it with her feelings, so it should be okay.

“I don’t hear any barking. Are you sure your dog is behind this door?” One of the men in the rescue squad asked.

Jenny nodded. Her mommy had convinced the guards to help them find their ‘dog’ in here so they could rescue Daddy. Mommy had sent Jenny feelings to tell her it was important to keep the secret. Jenny didn’t understand why, really, but with how serious Mommy felt, she just obeyed and tried not to mess things up.

“They’re opening the door,” Jenny said to her Daddy.

When they scanned Mister Chuck’s badge on the wall, the heavy, metal doors slid open and inside was an empty room.

It was empty because Daddy hopped out above everyone’s heads as a tiny water strider spider and landed onto Mommy’s shoulder. Jenny had a hard time following him with her eyes since he was so small, but their connection let her track his movements when he climbed into Mommy’s pocket and turned into a hard shelled beetle.

Daddy was really good at transforming. Jenny wanted to get that good. She patted her pockets and promised Greenie one and two that they would get much better together.

“There’s no dog in here, I’m sorry,” one of the rescue squad guys said.

“I’m sorry, honey” Mommy said as she put a hand on Jenny’s shoulder and sent a pulse of insistence toward Jenny.

Jenny wasn’t exactly sure what Mommy wanted her to do, but she figured just responding like someone who lost their dog was the right way to go, so she lowered her head and said, “That’s okay.”

“Maybe he ran all the way home already,” Mommy said.

“That must be it,” One of the rescue squad people said, “Come on. We need to get out of here.”

Jenny nodded and followed along. She could feel the relief in her Mommy and Daddy. They both pulsed feelings of love and togetherness to each other and to her and she returned the feeling. It felt amazing to have Daddy back.
