Chapter 34: Dreams Beneath the Silence

  Location: Golden Field (Inner Forest)

  Time of Day: Evening

The golden field fell silent. There was no more ticking or silent chuckling. Both Echos had fallen.

Lumina and the Hikari twin stood before the Reaper's shattered body. Lumina gave a calm nod to the Twin, and the Twin returned it before dissolving into shimmering pink light, scattering into the air and fading into nothing.

Hikari ran up, grinning wide. "Lumina! We actually did it!" she cheered, still catching her breath. She clenched both fists, "We defeated the Clockwork Reaper! That was amazing!"

Lumina gave a faint smile, untying her ponytail as she slid her katana back into its sheath with a soft SHIING. "That was tougher than I expected," she admitted, brushing dust from her sleeve. "But we still managed to pull through. And it was all because of your great planning."

Hikari gave a smug smile, crossing her arms. "Finally I get some recognition around here."

Lumina chuckled softly. "Don't get too carried away now. We still have a long way to go before we celebrate."

"True," Hikari said, her voice gentler. "But it's these victories that keep us moving forward."

Lumina's gaze drifted toward the fading horizon, her tone calm but resolute. "Hmph. Guess you're right about that one."

Hikari glanced at Lumina's grazed body. "You really took some damage, huh."

Lumina looked herself over and sighed. "Yeah... that Reaper really tore up my favorite robe."

Hikari gave her a flat look. "I was talking about the scratches, not the outfit." She stepped closer. "Here - let me heal you."

Pink light shimmered from Hikari's hands, her aura flowing gently around Lumina's body. The cuts along Lumina’s skin began to close, threads of pink weaving through torn fabric.

Lumina exhaled, feeling the warmth fade. "Thanks for that, Hikari."

"Anytime." Hikari smiled faintly, then turned toward the other side of the field. Captain and Slayer stood among the golden ground, silhouettes framed by the sinking sun.

Hikari waved both hands high. "Heyyy, guys! We did it - the Reaper's down!"

Slayer raised a hand, waving back with a laugh. "Nice! And I took down the Mime myself!"

Captain crossed his arms. "Uh-uhm correction, I'm the one who actually eliminated the Echo."

Slayer tilted his helmet, pretending to think. "Right, right. Team effort, then."

The group chuckled, their laughter drifting softly across the quiet field. Then- VMMM... A faint pulse vibrated from Hikari's coat pocket. She blinked, reaching in slowly. The Black Star on the artifact's surface began to glow faintly.

  Hikari's eyes widened. "It's reacting..."

Lumina nodded slowly. "To the fallen Echos, I assume."

"Yes, most likely that's the case again." Hikari replied softly.

Then came a whisper - soft, childlike. "You've all done well..."

The artifact pulsed once more, and the voice grew clearer, mechanical yet almost human. "The Yuila-class Echo known as Clockwork Reaper has been defeated. The Yuila-class Echo known as Marionette Mime has also been defeated. If you would like to lock them away now... please consent."

Lumina's voice was firm, her brows drawing together. "It's asking for consent again."

Hikari looked up at her, the artifact's glow reflecting in her eyes. "Well... we all know what comes next."

Lumina gave a sharp nod. "Do it, Hikari."

"Right." Hikari tightened her grip on the artifact and raised it high. "I consent!"

The Black Star at its center ignited with blinding light. A pulse rippled through the air as the voice echoed once more.

"Affirmative... Now Initiating Black Seal Protocol."

A small circle of black starlight opened above the artifact - then, FWOOOM! a surge of black aura erupted outward, flooding the entire clearing. The air vibrated, rippling with energy.

From within the void, chains of shadow emerged, spiraling out in all directions. They slithered across the ground, collecting what remained of the Reaper - shattered bones, fragments of gears, and the broken pendulum that once dictated time.

Then SHHHHRRK! one of the chains shot across the field, weaving past Slayer and Captain and disappearing into the forest beyond. A moment later, a faint sound echoed CLINK. Far away, where the Mime's porcelain body lay shattered, the same black aura enveloped it. Chains wrapped tightly around its form, covering them in darkness before dragging the form across the field.

The Reaper’s remains followed - both Echos dragged upward in streaks of black aura before being swallowed whole by the void above the Artifact. An echoing scream marked its closing… and silence followed. The artifact's voice resonated once more - quieter now, but closer... almost intimate.

"Echos contained... you are so close now... I can feel it... soon, my voice will reach you."

The black aura hanging in the air slowly receded, trailing away into thin wisps of smoke before fading completely. Then, even the faint hum of the Artifact faded into silence, leaving only the soft wind brushing across the quiet field.

Captain and Slayer regrouped with Hikari and Lumina.

Slayer exhaled, then shivered. "Ugh... that always creeps me out."

Captain’s tone came firm. “Well, glad the battle’s over now. We managed to take down the Echos.”

Lumina nodded. “Yes, they were formidable foes, but we still prevailed.”

Slayer chuckled, shaking his head. “Yeah, Captain and I saw how it went down on your side too. That was awesome!”

Hikari smirked faintly. “Glad we were able to entertain you.”

The tension finally eased, a few smiles breaking through the group before their focus returned to the artifact.

Slayer gestured toward Hikari's hand, where the Artifact rested. "Anyway, did you guys hear what the artifact just said?"

Hikari glanced down at the artifact. "Yeah... something about its voice soon reaching us."

Lumina crossed her arms, brow furrowing. "But I don't get it. Hasn't it already been talking to us?"

Hikari nodded slightly. "Well, technically, yes. But I think there's more to it than that. It feels like it's... revealing itself piece by piece with each Echo it contains. My guess is that soon, it'll be able to actually communicate with us."

Captain's voice came low and thoughtful. "You mean like... start a conversation?"

"Precisely," Hikari said firmly, resting her hands on her hips. "But that's just me guessing from what I've observed so far. I can't confirm anything just yet."

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

Lumina’s gaze softened. “So, you think if we keep using the artifact to contain more Echos, the voice will eventually reveal itself to us at some point?”

Hikari let out a small sigh, nodding slightly. “Maybe. It did say we were getting close… so I’d like to believe that’s what it meant.”

Slayer chuckled. "Well, what are we waiting for then? Let's go catch some more Echos!"

Captain gave him a sidelong look, arms crossed. "Someone sounds a little too excited to get his ass kicked again."

"Hey," Slayer shot back, grinning behind his helmet, "I'm the only one here who can actually take a beating. So I think you mean to say, thank you for protecting me."

  Captain smirked slightly. "Hmph."

Hikari smiled at the two, shaking her head before slipping the Artifact back into her coat pocket. "Well, all we can do now is keep moving forward. I'm sure we'll find the answers were looking for soon. So let's not lose sight of our destination - Echohold-09 is only about four miles from here now."

Lumina nodded, her tone calm but firm. "Good. Then I believe we should get going. It's starting to get dark."

The sun had already dipped below the horizon, its last traces of gold fading from the sky. In less than an hour, night would claim the field completely.

"Right," Hikari said. She then raised her hand. "Drone."

One of her drones hummed to life, hovering beside her. "Continue our route toward Echohold-09, please." She gave its side a gentle pat.

The drone emitted a soft hum, projecting a thin pink guiding line across the field and disappeared into the darkening forest.

Hikari adjusted her coat, eyes fixed on the treeline ahead. "Alright, everyone. Let's move out."

The team followed, their silhouettes fading into the forest as the last traces of daylight slipped away. But in the stillness of the coming night... something was already waiting for them.

  Inside The Forest...

The forest grew darker the farther they walked, their footsteps crunching softly against the fallen leaves. Night had fully settled in now - the hum of insects echoing through the trees, the occasional hoot of an owl breaking the silence. A cold breeze brushed through the branches, carrying the faint scent of wood and leaves. They had been walking for a couple of miles now, with no sign of any Echos or Echohold-09 yet.

Lumina was the first to speak, her voice steady but calm. "I believe we should make camp soon. Going any further in our current condition would be us inviting death."

Hikari nodded, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "You're right. I know we're close to reaching Echohold-09... but what good is it if we're burned out before we even get there?"

Hmm... Her drone let out a quiet hum beside her, almost as if agreeing that it was tired too.

Captain let out a quiet yawn. "Yeah, I agree. I could use some rest, so let's find a safe spot to set up camp."

Slayer stretched his arms, letting out an exaggerated groan. "Nahh, I say we keep going. I was born to handle these kind of scenarios anyway."

The rest of the group walked right past him. Lumina was the last to pass, glancing over her shoulder with a straight face. "Come on, Slayer let's go. Before I give you a reason to rest."

Slayer sighed, lowering his arms. "Fiiine... I'm coming."

After a few more minutes of walking, they came upon a small clearing surrounded by tall pines. The ground was soft, and the moonlight filtered gently through the branches. It was quiet - peaceful, almost.

They set up camp using the stones and fallen wood scattered around. Hikari directed one of her drones toward the pile. "Alright, let's get some light." PEW! A pink spark fired from the drone, igniting the wood into a small, steady flame. The team sat around it on a few old logs they found nearby, the warmth of the fire cutting through the forest chill.

Slayer leaned back against a log, arms folded behind his head. "Man... I can't remember the last time we had a quiet night without something trying to kill us."

Hikari poked the campfire with a stick, smiling faintly. "Don't get too comfortable now. There might still be things lurking around the forest that'd like to try too."

Slayer raised a brow. "Like what, exactly?"

Hikari grinned. "Oh, I don't know... venomous snakes... or spiders!"

Slayer scoffed. "Eh, that doesn't scare me."

Hikari tilted her head, feigning innocence. "Oh really now? Then I guess you don't mind the spider right next to your log."

"AH~ what?! Where?!" Slayer shot up in a panic, scanning the ground around him.

Hikari chuckled, grinning. “Looks like the great tin can has been Echolocked. Time to initiate Black Seal Protocol.”

Slayer clenched a fist. "Ohh, you've done it now-"

Lumina and Captain smiled faintly at the scene, the voices of Hikari and Slayer lingering in the background before fading. Then Captain spoke to Lumina, his gaze fixed on the fire. She sat on the same log beside him, legs crossed, arms folded. His tone was quieter than usual - steady, but more genuine. "...Hey, Lumina."

She turned her head toward him. "Hm?"

Captain kept his eyes on the fire, elbows resting on his knees. "Back during the Siren fight... when I got dragged into that damn feast dimension." He exhaled slowly. "I never got the chance to thank you properly. Usually, I'm the one doing the saving, so I guess I never found the words."

Lumina tilted her head slightly, smiling. "I'm happy to hear it. But It's not about who saves who, Captain. It's about protecting those around you." Her tone softened further, a spark of warmth behind her words. "Especially if it's one of my students."

Captain looked at her for a moment, then turned his gaze back to the fire. "Yeah... appreciate that."

"Don't mention it," Lumina said simply.

Captain's voice came quieter, tinged with curiosity. "I remember Hikari saying you used that Elegant Form to save me?"

Lumina nodded. "Yeah. I had to." She looked toward the fire, its light flickering in her eyes. "Do you remember when I first used it... back when I trained alongside you?"

Captain nodded faintly. "I remember. It was really something else. Makes sense why you were able to save me and take down the Siren as well."

Lumina's hand rose to the black pendant on her chest, fingers closing gently around it. "Mh-hm. It took me years to master that technique. Guess it's finally paying off after all that training."

Captain leaned back slightly. "And unfortunately, I still didn't get to see that form because I was knocked out cold the entire time."

Lumina smiled, a quiet laugh slipping through. "I suppose I'll have to keep you waiting for that day, then. Until you can finally witness my full elegance."

Captain crossed his arms, the faintest hint of amusement on his face. "Hmph. Guess so."

Then, Hikari peeked her face between Captain and Lumina. "What are you two muttering about?"

"Nothing, Hikari. Just catching up, that's all," Captain said, looking slightly away.

"Don't worry, Hikari," Lumina added calmly. "It's nothing to worry about I assure you."

Hikari stood tall, hands on her hips, a pout forming on her face. "Oh, come on! Now I really wanna know!"

"Yeah, tell us!" Slayer chimed in, pointing a finger. "Remember, Captain, you still owe me one for being your shield!"

"Like hell I do!" Captain shot back.

Hikari crossed her arms. "And you owe me for... uhm... buying you lunch back at the facility! Yeah!"

Captain let out a small sigh. "Are you two done?"

  Slayer shrugged. "Eh, Not really."

The group's laughter carried through the clearing as the fire crackled softly, the forest humming around them. After a while, Slayer rose from his log, stretching with a long yawn.

"Well, as much as I'd love to enjoy this cozy little fire, nature is calling so I'll be right back."

"Just don't run off too far," Hikari called after him.

Slayer waved her off. "Ah I'll be fine, don't worry about me. I am the great Slayer, after all." He jabbed a finger proudly at himself, then headed off toward the trees.

Lumina sighed, resting her chin on her hand. "Sometimes I wonder how I ended up with him."

  Captain chuckled lightly.

Hikari smiled. "Oh, come on - he's just being... well, Slayer!"

Lumina and Captain just gave her a confused look.

  Hikari blinked. "What?"

The group fell into light conversation, their voices blending softly with the sound of the crackling fire and distant owls. A few minutes later, leaves rustled. Slayer stepped back into the clearing -holding a red balloon.

"Hey guys, look what I found!" he said proudly.

  The group blinked.

"It's a balloon!" Slayer added, grinning under his helmet. "It was just floating there in plain sight, so I grabbed it. I love red."

Hikari froze, her smile fading. "Wait... a red balloon?"

Slayer tilted his head. "Uh, yeah? Why the face?"

"I don't know," Hikari murmured, unease flickering in her eyes. "It just feels... wrong somehow."

Slayer laughed. "What, you scared of a balloon? You make it sound like you've never seen one before."

Lumina sighed, crossing her arms. "You dummy, that's not what she means. She's saying why is there a balloon in the middle of the forest?"

Hikari's eyes widened as a memory flashed behind them. Her tone sharpened as she rose from the log. "Wait. Slayer. That balloon - get rid of it. Now!"

Slayer hugged it close to his chest. "What? No way! I'm keeping it. Souvenir of our journey, you know? Might even tie it to my helmet."

Hikari took a step forward, voice rising. "Slayer, you don't understand! That balloon is-"

POP! The sound cut through the night. The rubber fell to the ground, limp and silent. A faint mist leaked from within - thin, colorless - drifting into the air around them. They inhaled it, but nothing seemed to happen. Everything then went still.

Slayer blinked, looking around. "Huh? Why are you all staring at me?"

Hikari tilted her head, expression dazed. "I-I... don't know." She then put her palm on her forehead. "I can't remember what we were talking about."

Lumina rested a hand on her chin. “I believe we were discussing how Slayer tends to disturb the peace around us.”

"Hey what!? That's not true at all!" Slayer protested. He paused, brow furrowing under his helmet. "No, but for real... I feel like I just got brain fog. I can't even remember what we were arguing about."

Captain rubbed his temples with a low sigh. "I think we're just tired, that's all. Let's just go ahead and get some rest."

Hikari nodded, lowering her arm. "Yeah... you're right. We've been up all day so it's probably finally catching up to us."

"Agreed," Lumina said, standing. "Unfortunately, we didn't bring any sleeping bags, so I'll go collect some leaves and evergreen boughs we can use for bedding."

The others nodded slowly. Then came the soft rustle of leaves as Lumina gathered handfuls of broad, dry ones and layered evergreen boughs. When she returned, the faint scent of pine drifted through the air. She spread the materials evenly near the campfire, creating simple makeshift beds. One by one, they settled in.

But as Hikari lay back, the faint unease in her chest refused to fade. Something felt wrong. She knew it. And yet... a part of her couldn't remember why. The forest fell silent.

The red rubber scrap fluttered once in the wind, then vanished into the darkness of the forest...
