Location: The Forest
Time of Day: Day
The party moved carefully through the forest with their eyes sharp and weapons ready by their side. A faint mist drifted between the trees as Hikari's drone hovered ahead, its soft pink aura guiding their path.
"This forest gives me the feeling of someone always watching us," Lumina murmured, her eyes scanning between the trees. "Something just waiting for the right moment to strike."
"Oh, it's watching, alright," Slayer replied, his tone playful. "I'm calling it, something's definitely gonna lunge at us from those trees at any point. Or worse... another creepy lullaby. Yuk."
Hikari glanced back at Lumina, who paced right behind her. "Eh, I wouldn't worry. As long as we've got Lumina with us, we'll be just fine."
Lumina crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. "And what exactly do you mean by that, hm?"
"Well," Hikari said, glancing over her shoulder again, "you've got that Neo-Emanation thing, right?"
"Yeah," Lumina replied, her tone calm but curious. "But what about it?"
"If we ever run into another Echo, you can just-" Hikari clenched a fist with a grin, "-beat it to a pulp with that form of yours."
"Only if the situation calls for it," Lumina warned, her expression sharpening. "Remember what I said back at the dojo? Elegant Form drains me fast. So if I push it too long, I'll burn out and become a liability."
Hikari nodded, her tone thoughtful now. "Right... a powerful form, but a risky one at that. Not something you can use unless you're ready to end the fight right there and then."
Slayer laughed, his voice echoing lightly through the trees. "Don't worry, Hikari! Once I unleash my Neo-Emanation, the Echos won't even have enough time to scream."
Hikari smiled faintly. "Can't wait to see the day."
Captain walked in silence beside Hikari, his gaze fixed ahead. He didn't say a word, but the faint smile beneath his breath said enough. They traveled a bit further down the forest and Captain was the first to spot it. He raised his rifle slightly. "Contact, up ahead." There was bodies... half a dozen of them, torn apart, scattered across the forest's path.
"Gravehowlers..." Hikari whispered, stepping closer. "So this is where they've been hiding."
But then one twitched. It lifted its head with a guttural snarl. Then another stirred beside it... and another. One limped forward and another darted behind a tree, circling wide. GRRHHHNN!
Slayer's tone snapped tight as he unsheathed his blade and raised his shield. "Wait - Is that one trying to flank us!?"
SHIING! Lumina unsheathed her katana in a swift motion. "Looks like there's another fight forming right before us. Everyone stay on guard!"
Hikari's eyes widened. "Careful! They're beginning to charge straight at us!"
"Incoming!" Captain barked, snapping his rifle up with practiced precision.
FWISH! Leaves scattered as the Gravehowlers charged. The team burst into motion - Emanation States igniting one after another. Pink... Red... Green... Blue. In an instant, the forest lit with color. The fight erupted into chaos.
FWOOSH! Lumina dashed forward first. "Cover me! I'm taking point!" her blade flashing in arcs of green light as she cut down two howlers. SLASH! SLASH! SPLAT!
"I've got your back!" Captain shouted, activating his configuration shift. His rifle reformed into SMG mode CRRK! CRRK! Each burst burned with red aura, tearing through multiple Gravehowlers.
"My turn!" Slayer growled, slamming his shield into one. THUMP! The impact pinned it against a tree before his sword split its torso in two. SHHK! "Oh, still moving?" he muttered as the creature clawed feebly at the dirt. With a heavy stomp SPLAT! he crushed its skull, ending it for good.
Hikari hung back, her aura flaring as she summoned her Tech Link Drones. "Let's go Drones!" HUMMM! Three pink-lit drones spun around her in a defensive formation. "Engage!" PEW! PEW! The drones shot forward with sharp hums, pink blasts slicing through the air. SPLAT! SPLAT! Gravehowler skulls burst one after another, black fluid spraying across the trees as the pack crumbled under precise fire.
But even as the team fought, the Gravehowlers moved with unsettling precision. They feinted, circled, striking in pairs as if guided by a single mind.
A sudden blur slipped past Hikari's drones. FWUMP! It lunged from behind, slamming her hard into the ground. "Ah-!" she gasped, pinned beneath its weight as teeth snapped inches from her throat.
"Hikari!" Captain barked, snapping a glance over his shoulder. He sprinted across the clearing, yanking the combat knife from his leg holster - its blade flashing in a streak of red as he closed the distance. "Get off her!" With a burst of strength, he wrenched the Gravehowler off her and drove the blade straight through its skull. SCHK! The infected twitched once... then fell limp beside her, its black blood seeping into the dirt.
Hikari pushed herself up, breath unsteady. "Phew... thanks, Captain."
Captain shot her a brief glance - his face hard, tone low. "Try to be more aware, Hikari. I can't keep pulling you out every time."
A faint smile tugged at Hikari's lips despite the warning. "...Still, I knew you wouldn't let me down."
Captain grunted, giving no reply, though his grip tightened on the knife before turning back toward the fight. "There's too many of them," he muttered. "We can't keep this up forever... we need to find a way to finally end the infection."
Hikari's eyes narrowed as something caught her attention. "Hm...?" She dropped to one knee beside the fallen Gravehowler Captain had just killed, pressing her palm to its chest.
Captain stepped closer, his voice low but focused. "What is it?"
A pink glow flared from Hikari's hand, her aura threading through the Echo's dark veins. Her breath hitched. "...No way. They seem to be linked somehow. Every Gravehowler shares the same network. Kind of like a hive mind. That's why they're so coordinated and move together."
Captain's jaw tightened. "So they're not individuals but one entity?"
"Yeah," Hikari said, eyes gleaming. "I probably never would've discovered this without using Emanation. Wow... this is incredible data - I have to record it for the Institution!"
Captain shot her a flat look. "Hikari, maybe not the best time for that."
Hikari blinked, then laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of her neck. "R-right... sorry! Force of habit." She gave her head a couple of light knocks. "Dumb science brain."
SLASH! Lumina cut down another howler, calling out, "You guys have a great plan back there? "We could really use some help over here!"
Slayer grunted, kicking a Gravehowler off his shield. "If you figured something out, now's the time to share it!"
Hikari's eyes lit up. "Oh yeah!" She glanced at Slayer and Lumina. "I think I've figured out a way to stop the Gravehowlers! I'll just need a little bit of time to finish the hack!"
Slayer cocked his head, slicing another. "Wait, you're hacking a Gravehowler's brain or something!?"
"Precisely! With Aura Tech Link!" Hikari shouted back, her voice sharp with focus as aura flowed between her hands.

"Hah! That's awesome!" Slayer laughed, cleaving another infected in two.
Hikari turned her gaze back to the infected, a pink light in her eyes. "Yes... I can use my Tech Link to hack into the Gravehowlers' shared mind and then layer it with Cognitive Acceleration. That'll let me map every neural link between them - like tracing the lines of a hive. I'll see them all at once as one entity."
SLASH! Lumina cut down another Gravehowler, calling out, "Then it's settled. We'll keep holding the frontline while you concentrate on your aura!"
Captain gave a firm nod, glancing toward Hikari. "You have our support."
Hikari's drones drifted into formation beside them, their pink cores glowing bright. "And you'll have theirs too." She followed with a determined smile.
Slayer lifted his shield with a grin. "Don't worry, science princess. I'll keep the mutts off you."
Hikari smiled faintly at him, pressing her hands against the Gravehowler's head as her pink aura flowed around her. "Glad I can count on you, tin-can," she teased with a playful wink before turning back. She closed her eyes and steadied her breath, diving into the link. "Commencing sync... Activating Aura Tech Link!" Her eyes snapped open - now glowing pink - as her aura surged outward, flooding into the corpse. "One more... Now activating Cognitive Acceleration!" The Gravehowler stiffened as lines of code unfolded before her eyes. TKTKTKTKTK-VMMM! DZZZT-PING! Data poured open, pink lines of light scattering across her vision like streams of circuitry. Hikari narrowed her eyes, focusing as her mind raced to connect each line, weaving the network together strand by strand. A small smile tugged at her lips. "Hehe... keep them coming."
The trees shook with guttural howls as new shapes burst from the faint mist - dozens of Gravehowlers, their eyes burning white. Behind them, hulking shadows tore through the treeline. Gravehowler Beasts. Not one, but several - their massive frames towering above the pack, a foul stench rolling off them as their claws raked the ground.
Captain snapped his rifle up. "We've got company!"
"Come and get me, you ugly beasts!" Slayer shouted, his shield slamming into the first wave with a thunderous crash. BOOM!
"Protect Hikari at all costs!" Lumina commanded, her blade carving through the pack in blurs of green light. Her aura flared brighter, voice cutting through the chaos. "Chronus Overdrive!" The words echoed through the forest clearing, carried on the pulse of her power. Time warped around her as she surged forward in a flash of speed. FWOOSH! "I'll take care of the big ones!" she shouted, her katana blurred through the Gravehowler Beast in a storm of slashes - striking faster than its regeneration could react. SLASH! SHCK! SLASH! Green light traced every wound before the creature let out a guttural GROAAGHHH! and collapsed in pieces. CRASH!
Hikari's drones fired in rapid bursts PEW! PEW! pink blasts cutting through multiple Gravehowlers. One of the Beasts spotted a drone hovering in midair. With a powerful leap, it lunged upward - its sharp jaws snapping shut around the drone. CRK! Metal shards scattered as the machine was crushed to pieces. The Beast let out a deep roar, as if declaring its dominance. The sudden feedback jolted Hikari mid-link. She winced, breath catching - then steadied herself. "Focus..." she muttered, forcing her concentration back. BEEP-BEEP!
Captain's crimson bullets pierced through the Gravehowlers with surgical precision - yet two Beasts thundered toward him, their roars shaking the forest. GROAAHH! Slayer met another head-on, his shield slamming into it with such force the trees rattled. TSS! TSSHHK! Lumina's blade ripped through three more in a blur. "HAAAH!" SHNK! Her katana tore through flesh - devouring them whole. But her breaths came rough - sweat streaking down her face as her body trembled, stamina bleeding away with each strike.
"We can't hold them much longer!" Slayer shouted, two Gravehowlers clawing and scraping against his shield.
Captain's tone stayed firm, even through ragged breaths. "Then we just keep pushing forward! Don't falter now!" He shifted his rifle into sniper configuration, red aura burning bright as he fired into the charging Beasts. BANG! BANG!
Behind them, Hikari's aura flared violently. One drone swirled around her in a protective ring as she finished threading the Gravehowlers' network. Her eyes widened - glowing bright pink. "It's done!" she shouted, slamming both hands outward. The lines of code that had filled her vision dissolved in an instant, vanishing before her eyes. "Now beginning shutdown process!" FWOOO!
A shockwave of pink light erupted from her, racing skyward before splintering into dozens of streaks - homing beams that shot out like missiles across the land. They tore through the forest, down broken roads, over shattered city streets. Each beam pierced into a Gravehowler wherever it hid, heads bursting in synchronized flashes of light. From the woods to the ruins of distant towns, the hive collapsed all at once. The battlefield fell silent. Gravehowler corpses littered the clearing, and the Beasts that had once charged so ferociously now lay broken and still.
Slayer lowered his shield, chest heaving. "Huh...?" His gaze swept across the forest, past the motionless corpses scattered across the ground. "Did it work?"
Lumina's grip on her katana eased, her gaze shifting toward Hikari. "Well?"
Hikari staggered, panting hard, sweat dripping down her temple. "...Yeah... I think it's over now."
Then the Artifact in her coat pocket pulsed, resonating with the fallen Echos. She drew it out, the Black Star engraving glowing faintly in her hand. The team froze, exchanging wary glances - until the voice spoke again.
"The pack is broken. The hive silenced. If you wish to lock them away... now is the time."
Hikari's eyes widened. "...It's giving us the choice again. Just like before."
Captain met her gaze. "Then it's time to finally end it."
"Right." Hikari nodded firmly. She pressed her palm against the Artifact's Black Star engraving. "I consent!" The voice obeyed her command.
"Affirmative. Initiating Black Seal Protocol."
A small circle of black starlight opened above the Artifact - then black aura erupted outward, flooding the clearing. It surged through every place Hikari's aura had reached, consuming the fallen Gravehowlers. One by one, the bodies began to glow with dark light. The hulking forms of the Beasts lifted slowly into the air, twitching as twisted threads of black energy coiled around them. The black aura tore and consumed each piece, stripping flesh and form until nothing remained. For several long moments, the clearing was swallowed in darkness. The black aura devoured every trace of the Gravehowlers, until the final strand screamed back into the void and vanished above the Artifact - then silence fell.
The Artifact's voice echoed, calm but heavy. "Another Echo removed..." Her tone dropped to a whisper, almost yearning. "But it's still not enough..."
Lumina lowered her blade with a quiet sigh, her green aura fading into nothing. "It's over..."
Captain lowered his rifle, his red aura vanishing. "Yeah... another Echo locked away."
Slayer sheathed his sword, resting his shield at his side as his aura disappeared. "Phew. Now that's what I call an all-you-can-slay buffet!"
Hikari managed a faint smile, though her breath came shaky and her vision blurred. "Good job, everyo-" Her words broke. The drones wavered midair, their pink aura faltering before vanishing into particles of light. FWSSHHH... Her body gave out, collapsing as her aura faded completely.
"Hikari!" the group shouted in unison, panic tearing through their voices as they rushed to her side. A heavy silence followed. Only the faint hum of the Artifact remained - low, steady, and fading..
A few moments later...
The sun now hung low, the forest in warm gold. Evening had begun to settle in.
Hikari stirred, blinking as she realized she was lying on the ground. Slowly, she pushed herself up, one hand pressed to her forehead.
"Welcome back," a familiar voice called.
"Huh?" She turned toward the sound. Lumina sat on a tree stump - legs crossed, arms folded. Captain leaned against a nearby trunk, arms relaxed but eyes sharp, while Slayer sat on the ground, casually sharpening his sword.
Lumina's gaze softened, though her tone carried its usual edge. "You overdid it... again."
Hikari gave a sheepish smile, scratching her cheek. "Ehehe... I guess I did, huh."
Captain spoke next, tone steady but gaze lingering on her a moment longer than usual. "You did great. But... try to be more careful next time, Hikari."
Slayer grinned wide. "Careful? Nah, that was peak! Pink aura blasting everywhere, you yelling 'I consent!' then boom - black aura nukes the Gravehowlers! Absolutely badass."
Lumina shot him a flat look. "Slayer. Don't encourage her."
"What? It's true, though," he muttered, still dragging the whetstone down his blade.
Hikari lowered her head slightly. "Sorry for worrying you all... I didn't mean to. Really."
Captain's voice dipped, quieter, almost reluctant. "...We thought we lost you there for a moment. But we were still able to feel your aura."
Hikari blinked, surprised, before Lumina cut in firmly. "It's fine. But remember what I said once before, Hikari. Every skill you use drains your stamina each time. Especially when you overlap them like how you did back there. Lose sight of that in the middle of battle, and you won't just falter... you'll drag the rest of us down with you." Despite her serious tone, there was a faint tremor of relief in Lumina's voice - one Hikari didn't miss.
Hikari smiled softly. "...I understand. I promise I'll be more careful next time."
Captain crossed his arms, his expression serious but tone lighter. "Well... despite all that, you were able to clear out the Gravehowlers. I've gotta give credit where it's due."
Lumina rose from the stump, brushing off her robe. "I commend your skills, Hikari. I can see that you're improving and growing stronger with every fight."
Hikari nodded, a faint blush coloring her cheeks. "Thanks for the compliment."
Lumina crossed her arms, turning her gaze to Captain next. "You too, Captain. Your timing and choice of skills are well-coordinated. You adapt well to the situation."
Captain gave a small huff. "Hmph. I'm just fighting to keep us alive, that's all."
Hikari slowly stood, stretching her stiff arms before glancing upward. "Wow... I really was out for a while, huh? The sun's already starting to fade."
Lumina followed her gaze, her tone sharpening. "Yes... once night falls, our visibility will drop, and the risk rises. If we ever need to rest, we'll make camp then. So for now we keep moving."
Slayer hopped to his feet with renewed energy, sheathing his sword and clenching his fists. "Alright! Onward, team! Let's show those Echos what happens when they mess with the storm!"
Captain checked his rifle. "Wonder what else is waiting for us down the road."
Hikari drew the Artifact from her coat pocket. "No matter how many Echos rise against us, we'll overcome anything that tries to stand between us and Echohold-09. And with the Artifact in our hands... our chances of survival just got a lot stronger."
Lumina's eyes narrowed with determination. "Well said."
Hikari tucked the Artifact away and straightened. "Let's move forward... no matter what waits ahead."
The party pressed forward. Sunlight lingered through the trees, but night was closing in. Soon, the forest would belong to the dark and to the Echos that awakened with it. And what came next would push them beyond anything they'd ever faced.
