Chapter V: The Gathering of Futures

Chapter V: The Gathering of Futures

The entrance examinations for Arcanis Academy were held once every year.

And every year, Viremont City transformed into something resembling controlled chaos.

Carriages lined the streets outside the northern gates before dawn. Merchant stalls appeared overnight selling everything from enchanted ink to “memory-enhancing elixirs” that almost certainly did nothing except taste unpleasant.

Students arrived from every province of the kingdom.

Some came dressed in noble colors, surrounded by servants and family banners. Others arrived alone, carrying worn satchels filled with borrowed books and quiet determination.

All of them had the same goal.

  Arcanis Academy.

Kael Viremont observed the scene from the window of his carriage as it rolled slowly toward the academy grounds.

Statistically speaking, he thought, this is an impressive concentration of future rivals.

The academy itself rose above the city like a monument carved from moonlight.

White towers stretched toward the sky, connected by bridges of polished stone. Wide training courtyards surrounded the central complex, and enormous crystal pylons stood at the edges of the campus like silent guardians.

Mana flowed through those pylons constantly.

Even from this distance, Kael could feel it.

  "Impressive," he murmured.

Across from him, Adrien Viremont nodded once.

"Arcanis Academy has trained the kingdom’s strongest mages for three centuries."

  Kael tilted his head slightly.

"And today they will determine which applicants are worthy of joining them."

  "Precisely."

The carriage rolled through the outer gate and joined a long line of arriving candidates.

Kael stepped down onto the stone courtyard.

  Immediately he noticed something interesting.

  Everyone was watching everyone else.

Groups of students stood scattered across the courtyard, quietly evaluating one another. Some demonstrated minor magical tricks to impress their companions. Others kept their abilities carefully hidden.

Past-life arrogance radiated from several of them like perfume.

Kael walked calmly through the crowd.

If everyone else is shaped by past experience, he thought, then their behavior patterns should be predictable.

And predictable systems were easy to manipulate.

A sudden burst of flame drew his attention.

A boy standing near the center of the courtyard had ignited a sphere of fire above his palm. The flame burned steady and controlled, casting flickering light across the surrounding students.

A small crowd had already gathered.

"I told you," the boy said confidently. "My previous life specialized in combat magic."

He extinguished the flame with a flourish.

  "Third-tier battle mage."

  Several students murmured in admiration.

  Kael watched the demonstration thoughtfully.

  Competent.

  Not exceptional.

Still, the display had served its purpose.

The boy had just announced himself as a rival.

Before Kael could analyze further, a voice spoke beside him.

"That one does that every five minutes."

  Kael turned slightly.

A girl stood nearby with her arms crossed.

Short dark hair. Travel-worn clothes. A satchel filled with books slung across her shoulder.

  She noticed him looking.

"Let me guess," she said. "First time seeing someone show off a past life?"

  "Something like that."

She jerked her thumb toward the fire user.

"His name's Alric Thorn. He's been introducing himself to everyone within shouting distance."

  Kael filed the name away.

  "Effective strategy."

  "Annoying strategy."

She studied him for a moment.

  "You aren't impressed."

"I try not to be impressed before breakfast."

  That earned a brief laugh.

  "I'm Mira," she said.

  "Kael."

  "Just Kael?"

  "For the moment."

Mira raised an eyebrow but didn't press further.

Before the conversation could continue, a loud chime echoed across the courtyard.

Every student turned toward the academy gates.

A tall man in dark blue robes stepped forward onto the stone platform overlooking the gathering.

His voice carried effortlessly across the crowd.

  "Welcome, candidates."

  Silence settled quickly.

"You stand here today because you possess something rare."

The man’s gaze moved slowly across the assembled students.

  "Power."

A ripple of anticipation passed through the crowd.

"But power alone does not create a mage worthy of Arcanis Academy."

He gestured toward the training grounds beyond the gates.

"The entrance examination will test your knowledge, your control, and your ability to adapt."

  His eyes hardened slightly.

"Many of you believe your past lives guarantee success."

  A few students shifted uncomfortably.

  The examiner continued.

  "You are mistaken."

  Kael watched the man carefully.

This one, he realized, was dangerous.

  Not because of magical strength.

  Because he was observant.

"Today," the examiner finished, "we will discover who among you deserves to stand within these halls."

  The gates behind him opened.

Massive stone doors sliding apart with a deep grinding sound.

The training grounds beyond were enormous.

Obstacle courses. Spellcasting arenas. Mana resonance pillars.

A battlefield disguised as an exam.

Students began moving forward immediately, excitement and tension mixing in the air.

  Mira glanced at Kael.

  "You ready?"

Kael looked toward the testing fields.

Then, briefly, the system interface flickered in his vision.

  A new line appeared.

  Ruin Node Proximity Increasing

  Kael blinked.

  That shouldn't be happening.

The ruin node he detected earlier was twelve kilometers away.

The academy was in the opposite direction.

  Which meant...

Something beneath the academy grounds was responding.

Kael felt a small, slow smile form.

  Interesting.

  Very interesting.

He stepped forward with the other candidates.

Behind them, deep beneath the ancient foundations of Arcanis Academy, something dormant shifted slightly for the first time in centuries.

And far away, beyond the western hills, another ruin node pulsed faintly.

  As if answering a call.
