Chapter 6: The Choice

The mist around the ridge had begun to thin, but the air was still cold enough to bite the lungs with every breath. Elias stood slightly ahead of Chloe, his body angled so that she remained behind his shoulder. His eyes stayed locked on the strange woman who had appeared only moments earlier. She stood calmly a few steps away, holding a long spear that glowed with a faint violet light.

Elias did not trust the calmness in her posture. He had spent most of his life reading people in tense situations in his carrier, and this woman carried herself with the confidence of someone who had seen danger many times before.

There was one thing that still bothered him.

“You still didn’t answer the question,” Elias said, his voice steady but firm. “Back there you did heard what I asked right?. Who are you?”

The woman watched him quietly for a moment before she responded.

“My name is Vaelira,” she said.

Her voice was soft, but it carried clearly through the misty air. Chloe felt the sound more than she heard it. Something about the tone made the air around them feel slightly tense, as if the world itself had paused to listen.

Vaelira continued speaking without raising her voice.

“I can be your guide if you choose to accept it. Right now you are standing in one of the most dangerous regions in this part of the world.”

Elias didn’t move. He kept studying her face carefully, looking for signs of deception.

“You say that like we didn’t already deal with danger,” he replied. “We fought the creatures which attacked us before the moment we arrived here.”

  Vaelira nodded slightly.

“Yes. you might have fought them,” she said. “But those were only scouts.”

Chloe felt her grip tighten around the back of Elias’s jacket.

  “Scouts?” Elias asked.

“The creatures you fought earlier were sent to search the area,” Vaelira explained. “They are small hunters to find new arrivals. They test strength and send signals back to their masters. If they fail to return, stronger hunters follow.”

  Elias processed the information quickly.

“And the stronger hunters are what exactly?” he asked.

  Vaelira’s eyes darkened slightly.

“They are called the High Malice,” she said. “They do not track by sight or sound alone. They sense presence. Human presence is especially easy for them to detect.”

Chloe shifted closer to her father.

“The longer you remain here,” Vaelira continued, “the easier it becomes for them to find you.”

Elias glanced around the ridge again. The terrain stretched in strange directions. Trees grew at odd angles and the sky looked unfamiliar, filled with stars he had never seen before.

“You talk like this place traps people,” he said.

  Vaelira shook her head calmly.

“It does not trap them. It simply gives them very little chance to survive.”

She turned slightly and pointed toward the distant horizon.

  Elias followed her gaze.

Far across the valley, beyond the rolling layers of pale mist, a city glowed softly against the darkness. Tall towers reflected white light into the sky, making the entire skyline visible even from miles away.

  Chloe stared at it.

It looked beautiful and peaceful compared to the empty wilderness surrounding them.

“This place is not a prison,” Vaelira said quietly. “It is a crossroads. Many arrive here. Few remain alive long enough to choose their path.”

Elias folded his arms slowly as he continued watching the distant city.

“And what kind of path are we choosing exactly?”

  Vaelira looked back at him.

“I can offer you three options. I will explain each one clearly, and you will decide which path you want to follow. I will only offer these choices once.”

  Elias nodded slightly.

  “Go ahead.”

  Vaelira raised one finger.

“The first option is what I call the Shielded Path.”

She pointed the spear toward herself.

“You come with me and allow me to guide you. I will teach you how this world works and how to avoid the creatures that hunt here. I know the territories of the High Malice and the places where humans can remain hidden. With my protection you will have a much higher chance of survival.”

  Elias listened without interrupting.

“But there is a condition,” she continued.

“If you choose this path, you must follow my orders without hesitation. I will make decisions that may not always make sense to you, but you will obey them. That is the only way I can keep you alive.”

She paused before finishing the explanation.

“You will be safe, but you will not be free.”

Elias absorbed the meaning of the words.

Vaelira then raised a second finger.

“The second option is the Gilded Cage.”

She pointed again toward the glowing city.

“That city is known as the City of Light. It is the largest settlement in this region. If I take you there, you will receive shelter, food, and protection from the creatures that roam these lands.”

Chloe kept staring at the distant towers.

Even from this distance she could hear something strange.

“However,” Vaelira continued, “the rulers of that city are extremely curious about anything unusual.”

  Elias narrowed his eyes slightly.

  “What kind of curiosity?”

“They study survivors,” Vaelira said. “Humans who arrive here and manage to defeat scouts are rare. The leaders of the city will want to understand how you survived.”

  Elias understood immediately.

  “They will experiment on us.”

“Yes,” Vaelira answered without hesitation. “They will test your physical abilities and your mental responses to this environment. They will ask many questions and perform many examinations. You will live comfortably, but you will have very little control over what happens to you.”

Elias looked back toward the glowing skyline again.

  Vaelira raised her third finger.

“The final option is the Sovereign Path.”

  Her voice remained calm.

“I leave you here exactly where you are right now. You continue on your own without my help and without the protection of the city.”

  Chloe swallowed nervously.

“That sounds like the worst option,” she said quietly.

“It is the most honest option,” Vaelira replied. “You remain free and answer to no one.”

Elias waited for her to finish.

“But understand something clearly,” she added. “The High Malice already know that new prey has entered this region. They will begin searching soon. Without guidance or shelter, your chances of surviving the night are extremely small.”

Chloe pulled gently on her father’s sleeve.

  “Dad,” she whispered.

  Elias looked down at her.

  “What is it?”

  Her expression looked confused.

“I can hear something from the city.”

Elias glanced back toward the horizon.

  “What do you mean?”

“It sounds like music,” Chloe said.

Vaelira watched her carefully but did not interrupt.

“And the forest behind us sounds strange,” Chloe continued slowly.

  Elias turned slightly.

The forest looked quiet and still.

“What kind of strange?” he asked.

  Chloe hesitated before answering.

“It sounds like something is screaming very far away.”

  Vaelira nodded slightly.

“The air of this world affects humans in unusual ways,” she explained. “Those who survive their first encounters begin to notice things others cannot.”

Elias looked back at the city again.

“If we go there,” he asked, “do they have the ability to send us back to our own world?”

  Vaelira considered the question carefully.

“The city has the technology and knowledge required to open gates between worlds,” she said.

A small amount of hope appeared in Elias’s expression.

“But I do not know whether they would choose to use it for you,” she finished.

Before Elias could respond, a deep roar rolled across the valley.

The ground vibrated beneath their feet.

Chloe gasped as the sound echoed through the mist.

Elias turned instantly toward the source of the noise.

Something enormous was moving below the ridge.

Trees bent and snapped as the creature climbed upward. Heavy footsteps shook loose rocks from the slope.

Two large red eyes appeared through the fog.

Then the creature stepped into view.

Its body looked like living stone. Moss and vines clung to its shoulders and back. Its arms were massive, easily thick enough to crush a car.

The monster pulled itself onto the ridge and stood upright.

  Vaelira’s voice remained controlled.

  “That is a Troll-King.”

The creature opened its mouth and released another roar that made Chloe’s ears ring.

More red lights appeared behind it in the valley.

Dozens of smaller creatures were climbing the slopes.

  Vaelira lifted her spear.

The purple energy running along the weapon brightened immediately.

  She looked at Elias.

“You must choose your path now.”

The Troll-King stepped forward, shaking the ground with its weight while the smaller creatures followed behind it through the mist.

Vaelira adjusted her grip on the spear and waited for Elias to answer.

The monsters had already begun their hunt.

Is this novel good? Should I continue it?
