The serpent moved first. Its coils unwrapped with terrifying speed; wings snapping open as super-heated air detonated outward. The pressure hit like a freight train. Hector was lifted off his feet and hurled across the volcanic ring. His body skipped along obsidian stone as lava splashed violently around him.
Life Mantle flared instinctively as golden green light surged around him. The aura began shedding molten droplets like rain rolling off glass. Even so, pain tore through him. Life Mantle stripped the worst of the heat, but the sheer physical force of the impact still carried through. He rolled hard, slammed a hand into the stone, and forced himself upright.
The Lava Snake reared high above the crater; wings spread wide. Heat warped the air around it, bending the world at the edges. When it opened its mouth, the glow inside was not flame, but liquid magma.
The serpent unleashed a supercharged hiss. The sound tore through Hector’s skull, rattling his bones and shaking loose chunks of rock from the mountain’s rim. Lava surged higher in response, answering the call like a living thing.
[Warning: Environmental Hazard Escalation]
[Life Mantle strain increasing]
“Yep. Could have told you that without a notification.”
The serpent struck. Using its superior mass, it slammed into Hector. A massive coil hammered into the ground where Hector had been standing a heartbeat earlier, obliterating stone beneath it. He barely avoided being crushed, launching himself sideways with a burst of healing-fueled propulsion. The shockwave still clipped him, throwing him hard.
He skidded yet again across the obsidian, skin blistering even through the mantle. Emergency Heal surged automatically, stabilizing tissue as fast as it failed.
Hector steadied his breathing as mana drained steadily. Life Mantle held, but the strain was unmistakable. This was not a creature meant to be fought head-on. Every instinct screamed that trying to overpower it would end with him ground into slag.
The serpent lunged again, jaws snapping shut where his head had been moments before. Lava sprayed outward as its mouth slammed closed. Hector ducked inside the arc of the strike, skidding along the inner rim of the crater.
The heat spiked; Life Mantle flickered. He reacted without thinking and activating Hands of Triage. He slammed his palm against one of the serpent’s obsidian scales. Vital Conduction activated and bright green arcs raced across the serpent’s body, sinking into the serpent’s mass.
The creature convulsed violently. A sound tore from its throat, half scream, half roar, as the life-aligned energy surged through channels.
Hector staggered back, heart pounding. It was working; Vital Conduction was damaging the creature, or at bare minimum getting a reaction out of it.
Activating Vital Focus, Hector’s perception sharpened. Energy flows within the serpent lit up in his vision. Musculature glowed hot and strained, but several regions burned brighter than the rest.
The energy he pushed was showing him a mental map of weak points in the boss level monster's body. With no time to understand how it worked, he grasped the basic concept and kept pushing. Finding weak point after weak point as the green healing energy raced through the serpents systems.
Forcing Vital Conduction to the point of Overheal, he poured the energy into the located weak points as quickly and precisely as he could. The serpent thrashed, wings snapping violently as it recoiled. Lava spilled from the creatures jaws, splashing harder on one side than the other. The ground cracked beneath its weight.
The creature was still lethal but off balance. Regardless, the Lava Snake retaliated instantly, but the serpent did not strike from the ground this time. Its wings snapped downward with explosive force. The crater detonated beneath the blast as the creature launched itself skyward, shedding magma in incandescent sheets. Lava streamed from its body like burning rain as it climbed, coiling midair with terrifying grace.
Hector barely had time to look up as the sky turned red. The Lava Snake twisted in the air and opened its jaws wide. Lava rocketed out of his mouth at a terrifying speed. A compressed bolt of molten stone screamed downward, trailing vaporized air in its wake.
Hector hurled himself sideways as the projectile struck where he had stood, obliterating stone and punching a glowing crater straight through the obsidian floor. The shockwave ripped him off his feet, flinging him backward as a shockwave of heat roared past.
[Warning: High-Velocity Thermal Projectile]
The serpent folded its wings and dove. The air itself screamed as the massive form plummeted toward him, heat pressure crushing downward like a falling star.
Hector braced, expecting the worst. Life Mantle surged outward just as the creature struck. The impact was catastrophic, but he met it head-on, driving both arms upward as the serpent's skull slammed into his guard. Golden green light flared violently as fangs and molten scales scraped against his forearms. Pain detonated through his bones as the force drove him back further; heels carving molten grooves through obsidian.
With a roar, Hector punched upward. Hands of Triage activated on instinct. His fist smashed into the creature’s jaw with enough force to snap its head sideways. Vital Conduction surged into the blow; Overheal flooded into the serpent seeking biological destruction. Green energy flashed across its face as internal flows spasmed.
The serpent shrieked as it tore upward again, wings beating wildly to recover altitude. Hector didn’t give it the chance, though. He launched after it using Overheal-fueled propulsion blasts beneath his feet, creating a wave of kinetic force, hurling him skyward in a streak of green light. Lava streamed past him as he closed the distance, heat tearing at his mantle as mana drained fast.
The serpent spun midair and unleashed another molten blast at point-blank range. Hector crossed his arms and drove straight through it. Flaring Emergency Heal, coating his arms in the protection of rapid regeneration.
Life Mantle flared blindingly bright as the lava struck like a freight train, Emergency Heal screamed warnings and reinforced tissue as fast as it failed. Burning pain tore through his arms, but he kept moving.
He slammed into the serpent’s body midair. Both of them crashed back toward the crater. Hector drove his fist into its neck as they fell; Vital Conduction flooding the impact point with a forceful Overheal overload. The serpent convulsed violently, wings locking for a split second as internal pressure spiked unevenly.

They hit the ground hard. The impact shattered stone and sent lava surging outward in violent waves. Hector rolled free at the last instant, skidding across the obsidian as the serpent slammed down in a tangle of coils and wings, no longer fully in control of its own mass. It reared and unleashed another torrent of molten liquid directly at him. Hector crossed his arms and braced. It didn’t seem to have a wide range of attacks, but the ones it used were overpowered.
Life Mantle and Emergency Heal flared brighter than it ever had before. Golden green light surged outward as the lava struck, and the world vanished into white heat. His aura bent and thinned, holding just long enough for Emergency Heal to reinforce it from within. The molten stream split around him as he lifted both hands to block the attack, Emergency Heal sealing up the damage as quickly as he could, as pangs of burning pain shot through his arms.
The force of the impact sent him crashing into the stone behind with explosive force. When the flow of magma ended, Hector dropped to one knee, gasping.
Life Mantle flickered.
It was not a true shield. Life Mantle was meant to heal and mitigate environmental damage, not absorb the full force of a boss-level entity that was the environment. For a brief moment, Hector wondered if his titles and skills were stacking together. If synergy was the only reason, he was still standing. The thought barely finished before the serpent moved again.
The serpent was becoming more desperate as its movement showcased more risky behaviors. Hector forced himself upright then he sprinted forward, Vital Focus flaring as he moved, mapping internal weak points as the serpent shifted.
The Lava Snake struck low, attempting to crush him beneath its bulk. Hector leapt, vaulted over the coil, and slammed both hands into its spine as he passed.
Hands of Triage and Vital Conduction formed as he landed a barrage of punches, each more powerful than the next. Quickly he found a good rhythm as punches continued to land and Overheal damage began to stack.
The serpent screamed again, wings flailing as it slammed into the crater wall. Cracks spider webbed through its obsidian scales. Hector hit the ground hard, rolling as molten fragments rained down. Life Mantle absorbed what it could. Emergency Heal screamed warnings at the edge of his awareness, but he ignored them. Fighting continued, and the serpent began to grow noticeably slower. Its attacks didn’t hit as often, using his speed and strength he was able to dodge most of the attacks.
By this time, he had struck multiple highlighted points of the serpent's internal network, likely responsible for regulating magma flow or some other unknown biological function. He did not know exactly what they were, but whatever balance they maintained was gone. Hector pushed himself forward again; teeth bared in a grim smile.
“I am not here to burn,” he growled.
The Lava Snake lunged, and Hector met it head-on. He planted his feet, Life Mantle blazing golden green around him, and drove both fists into the serpent’s skull. His skills came together under the banner of his killing intent. Vital Conduction showed more weak points rupturing as the creature began to slow down even more. Overheal continued to race out of control as more attacks landed.
Finally, after exchanging blows for a time, he landed one final punch, shattering another vital spot. There was an audible crack that resounded across the landscape, and the serpent froze, and its body slowly began to develop cracks everywhere.
Molten light bled from fissures along its spine as internal pressure collapsed inward instead of erupting. The massive serpentine form sagged and slid back into the crater, sinking into lava that could no longer sustain it.
The mountain went still as Hector collapsed to one knee, chest heaving.

-------------
Light rippled across the floor first; thin lines of authority flaring briefly before settling into a familiar pattern. The man at the center of the space stood with his hands folded behind his back, posture rigid, expression unreadable as the data resolved itself in the air before him.

He did not react immediately. Alerts like this were not uncommon. Most resolved themselves, but some require quiet corrections. This recent one lingered longer than he had expected. The symbols refused to stabilize, shifting and distorting as if resisting classification. Authority tags failed to bind cleanly. Predictive models returned incomplete results.
His gaze sharpened.
“Another,” one of the figures behind him said. The voice belonged to a woman clad in layered ceremonial armor, her helm tucked beneath one arm. “That makes three in this cycle.”
“Three confirmed, but one has been contained and the other one has fallen. From the looks of things this most recent one completed a dungeon way beyond the normal parameters.”
A raised hand silenced them. He stepped closer to the projection, studying the residual patterns left behind by the event. Life-aligned energy structured in ways that violated sanctioned models. Threaded through it all was contradiction.
“This is not random,” he said quietly.
The tension in the chamber deepened.
“It is adapting,” the armored woman said. “Faster than our projections allow.”
He straightened.
“Prepare the forward cells,” he ordered.
“Mobilize the Order of Correction. I want containment teams staged across all adjacent strata.”
“What if the containment fails?” Someone asked.
His answer came without pause.
“Then we escalate.”
The chamber darkened as a presence asserted itself.
The air grew heavy. Not with heat or pressure, but with authority so vast it bent perception itself. The shifting symbols froze as a singular point of focus manifested above the chamber.
A voice followed.
“You have confirmed deviation?”
He dropped to one knee instantly. The others followed without hesitation.
“Yes,” he replied.
“Its power profile is anomalous. Life aligned, but weaponized. So far it has been resistant to correction pressure.”
Silence stretched.
“Deviation is not forbidden,” the voice said at last.
“Uncontrolled deviation is.”
He bowed his head.
“This one will not remain small,” he said.
“It contradicts established progression. It survives where it should fail. If left unchecked, it will distort surrounding systems.”
The presence considered.
“Bring it in,” the voice commanded.
“If it can be bound, it will be studied.”
A pause followed.
“If it cannot,” the voice continued, colder now, “then it will be erased.”
“As you will it,” he said.
The presence withdrew, and the chamber returned to stillness, though the weight of authority lingered. He rose to his feet; eyes fixed on the fading alert.
“Unique deviation,” he murmured.
“Persistent, adaptive and refuses correction. This one is going to be a lot of fun.”
He turned to the assembled figures.
“Prepare for offensive operations,” he said calmly.
Then he stepped forward, authority settling around him like a mantle.
“Alric will lead this operation.”
Somewhere far beyond their sight, a path was being drawn, and something had just been marked.
