Chapter Seventy-nine: Hunted

  [Location: Ashglass Hollow Covenant Hub]

The warp gate deposited them back in Ashglass Hollow’s familiar plaza. The twilight felt almost comforting after the oppressive heat of the Scorched Threshold. Other players milled about, some preparing for dungeon runs, others trading at vendor stalls.

Kaiden’s boots hit cobblestone, and immediately Liri grabbed his cloak.

“We’re back! That was scary but you were so cool!” She was smiling, but there was something forced about it. Like she was trying to hide worry.

  “You okay?” Kaiden asked.

“Mhm!” she said it far too quickly.

He made a mental note to check on that later.

The quest turn-in NPC stood in the main hall, glowing with the telltale marker. Kaiden approached, pulling up the quest log.

[Quest Complete: The Fractured Sun Part 1]

  Objective: Defeat the Core Guardian

  Turn in: Fractured Sun Core

  He accepted the prompt.

"You have bought precious time. The Covenant thanks you, Dayslayers.”

  [Quest Rewards]

  EXP: +1,840

  Verdant Coins: +620

Reputation: Verdant Covenant +400 (Honored → Revered)

Item: Sun Fragment Charm (Accessory — Rare)

Item: Threshold Survivor’s Cache (Contains rare consumables)

[New Quest Available: The Fractured Sun — Part 2]

  Recommended Level: 17+

Warning: This quest chain continues deeper into unstable regions

Kaiden accepted the rewards. The coin influx was nice; they’d been burning through consumables.

“Revered rep,” Ironstride noted, checking her own rewards. “That unlocks better vendor inventory.”

“And probably locks us out of more Seelie content,” Naō added, scrolling through his interface. “But hey, we committed to the shadow fae. Might as well go all in.”

  Kaiden glanced at Naō’s status.

“You should do your advancement,” Kaiden said. “Solarium’s right here.”

Naō’s expression changed from something between excitement and hesitation. “Yeah. Yeah, let’s do it.”

They headed toward the Solarium. A handful of players lingered near the entrance, but it wasn’t crowded.

Inside, the main floor was standard, NPCs managing services, anf a few players sorting inventory. Naō walked to one of the advancement consoles along the wall.

  [Class Advancement Available]

  Current Class: Chemist (Base)

  Level Requirement: Met (15+)

Three paths appeared standard progressions for the Chemist job.

  [Available Advanced Classes]

Alchemist (Specialization: Combat Alchemy + Transmutation)

  Toxicologist (Specialization: Poison + Debilitation)

Field Medic (Specialization: Combat Healing + Support)

No unique path. Just normal class options.

Naō stared at the screen for a long moment.

Kaiden watched his friend’s shoulders drop slightly. The disappointment was subtle, but there.

“Alchemist is solid,” Naō said finally, keeping his voice neutral. “Better offensive options...”

  He selected it.

  [Class Advancement: COMPLETE]

New Class: Alchemist — Level 15

  [Skills Updated]

  Previous Skills Enhanced:

Corrosive Draught → Alchemical Corrosion (DoT increased to -60/sec, DEF reduction increased to -25%)

Catalyst Ricochet → Chain Reaction (Bounces to 6 targets, each bounce deals +15% more damage)

Mistbreaker → Purifying Eruption (Now removes negative effects AND damages enemies in radius for 240)

  New Combat Skills Unlocked:

Transmutation Blade: Imbue weapon attacks with elemental properties for 15 seconds (Fire/Ice/Lightning rotation)

Volatile Detonation: Detonate all active DoT effects on enemies for 300% of remaining damage as burst

Philosopher’s Assault: Throw an enhanced flask that deals 450 damage and leaves a damaging field (DoT: -40/sec for 10s)

  New Support Skills Unlocked:

Elixir of Fortitude: Grant one ally +40% DEF and immunity to one fatal hit (Duration: 30s, Cooldown: 120s)

Adaptive Compound: Create a consumable that adapts to party needs (healing/damage/cleanse based on situation)

  [Stat Changes]

  Mixmaster (Naō) — Level 15 | Alchemist

  LP: 215/215

  SP: 165

  ATK: 48 (+10)

  DEF: 36

  DEX: 40 (+4)

  AGI: 45

  INT: 58 (+5)

  WIS: 51 (+4)

Naō scrolled through the skills, his expression shifting from disappointment to interest. “Okay... Transmutation Blade is new. And Volatile Detonation basically lets me turn DoT stacks into burst damage.”

“See?” Kaiden said, clapping his froend on the back. “Combat Alchemist. You can actually fight now.”

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

“Yeah, but...” Naō gestured at Kaiden’s interface. “You got ‘Abyssal Reaver’ with reality-warping shadow water. I got ‘better flask damage.’”

  Kaiden stepped closer. “Hey.”

  “What?”

  “You disappointed....”

Naō glanced at him, then away. “I mean... I knew I wasn’t going to get some crazy unique class like you two. I don’t have a Photosphere. It’s fine.”

“It’s not fine if it’s bothering you.”

“It’s not....” Naō stopped, sighed. “Okay, yeah. Maybe a little its a big deal. You guys got these impossible classes with all these breaking-the-rules abilities, and I got... Alchemist. Which is just Chemist but with bigger damage dealing.”

Kaiden grinned. “Bigger numbers and effective combat skills.”

  “I guess.”

“Dude, you saved my life like six times in that last fight. Your Cataclysmic Decay combo did more damage than anything I threw out. And now you can detonate DoT stacks for burst? That’s insane.”

“That’s just good resource management...” he tried to downplay it, but Kaiden wasn't hearing any of it.

“Which takes skill,” Kaiden interrupted. “knowledge and timing.” He gestured at Naō’s skill list. “Look at this. Transmutation Blade means you’re not just throwing flasks anymore. You can actually get in melee range.”

Naō’s expression softened slightly. “I mean, when you put it that way...”

“Besides,” Kaiden continued, “Ironstride and I are probably going to get ourselves killed with these weird Photosphere abilities. We need someone with a normal class to balance us out. Someone who actually understands game mechanics.”

“You do just throw shadow-water at everything,” Naō admitted.

“Exactly. And it would be way less effective without your DoT setups and debuff rotations.” Kaiden clapped him on the shoulder. “You’re our anchor, man. Don’t forget that.”

Naō’s grin returned, a genuine one this time. “Okay, okay. You made your point. And honestly? Philosopher’s Assault doing 450 damage is pretty sick.”

  “See? Already better.”

“Also,” Naō added, pulling up another skill, “Adaptive Compound means I can craft consumables that change based on what we need. That’s actually kind of broken if I use it right.”

“There you go. Breaking the game in new ways.”

Ironstride approached, shield resting on her shoulder. “You good?”

“Yeah,” Naō said. “Just had a moment. I’m over it.”

  “Good. Because we should—”

Liri’s voice cut through, th excitement. “Kaiden.”

He turned. She was staring toward the entrance, her usual cheerfulness gone. “Something’s not right”

  “What do you mean?”

  “Outside. They're watching.”

Kaiden exchanged glances with Ironstride. “Seelie?”

“Has to be,” Ironstride said quietly. “Our Unseelie alignment is flagged high enough to draw attention.”

Kaiden moved to the window. Through the glass, he could see the plaza with layers moving about their business.

  Then he saw them.

Three figures in sun-patterned armor. They moved with purpose through the crowd, and players instinctively stepped aside, recognizing elite-tier NPCs when they saw them.

Their tags glowed above their heads in brilliant gold:

[Seelie Enforcer] — Level 25 (Elite)

[Seelie Warden] — Level 25 (Elite)

[Seelie Inquisitor] — Level 25 (Elite Commander)

  “Shit,” Kaiden breathed. “Level 25.”

“What?” Naō looked out the window. “Are they... are they hunting us?”

“Liri, specifically,” Ironstride said, her voice tight. “But we’re harboring her.”

The Inquisitor stopped in the center of the plaza. His voice rang out so everyone could hear.

“By decree of the Seelie Court, we seek an Unseelie child. A fragment of corrupted bloom that threatens the balance of sun and root.” His gaze swept across the plaza. “The child is considered extremely dangerous. Any who harbor this entity will be marked as enemies of the light.”

  [World Event: Seelie Judgment]

Objective: Escape Ashglass Hollow without engaging Seelie Enforcers

Warning: Combat against Level 25 elites is not recommended

  Time Limit: 5 minutes

“Extremely dangerous?” Naō muttered, glancing at Liri. “She’s like four feet tall and picks flowers.”

But Liri wasn’t smiling anymore. She was shaking, small hands gripping Kaiden’s cloak. “They found me.”

“Back door,” Ironstride said immediately. “Now.”

They moved quickly but didn’t run as that would draw attention.

The Solarium had a service exit leading to the crafting district. They slipped through just as the Inquisitor entered the main floor.

His eyes swept the room. then locked on the exit they’d just used.

  “There.”

The Enforcers moved as one, following.

  [World Event Updated]

  Enforcers have detected your exit

Pursuit active: 4 minutes 31 seconds remaining

They emerged into the crafting district with fewer players. Kaiden pulled Liri onto his back. “Hold on tight.”

“We can’t fight them,” Ironstride said, checking the minimap. “They’d destroy us.”

  “Then we run,” Kaiden said.

They cut through the marketplace, weaving between vendor stalls. Other players gave them confused looks.

Then the Enforcers rounded the corner behind them.

The Warden raised his massive warhammer that burned with harsh light. His voice boomed across the district.

“By order of the Seelie Court, surrender the Unseelie fragment! The child’s corruption threatens all who dwell beneath the sun!”

Several players stopped to watch, confused.

“The hell is happening?” someone muttered.

The Inquisitor raised one hand. “Last warning. The fragment must be contained. For the safety of the realm.”

Kaiden didn’t slow down. “Keep moving!”

The Inquisitor’s expression hardened. Light gathered at his fingertips.

  [Skill: Chains of Judgment]

Golden chains erupted from the ground, wrapping around Liri’s legs even though she was on Kaiden’s back. She cried out, and the chains started to drag her away.

  “Naō!” Kaiden shouted.

Naō spun, throwing his new Purifying Eruption flask. The explosion of vapor hit the chains.

  [Status Effect: Dispelled]

  [Damage: -240 (Enforcer)]

The chains shattered, but the Enforcer barely flinched. Level 25 stats made the damage negligible.

“Keep moving!” Ironstride called, already ahead.

They ran now. The Enforcers gave chase, their elite-tier AGI stats letting them close distance alarmingly fast.

[Time Remaining: 3 minutes 12 seconds]

“North gate!” Ironstride pointed. “It’s the closest exit!”

They sprinted toward the settlement’s northern boundary. The gate was open to Ashglass hub, where players came and went freely.

  But the Enforcers were gaining.

The Warden slammed his hammer into the ground.

  [Skill: Solar Rupture]

The shockwave tore through the street, sending cobblestones exploding upward. Players scattered, and NPCs dove for cover. The blast radius was massive.

Kaiden activated Vine Step, blinking forward with Liri clinging to his back. Ironstride blocked debris with her shield, Naō right behind her.

[Time Remaining: 2 minutes 04 seconds]

The north gate was fifty meters away. Forty. Now Thirty.

The Inquisitor appeared directly in front of them like some kind of teleport ability.

  [Skill: Solar Transpose]

He stood blocking the gate, arms crossed. His voice was calm, authoritative. “The child comes with us. This is not negotiable.”

Kaiden set Liri down behind him, scythe manifesting. “Not happening.”

“Then you choose death.” The Inquisitor’s threatened “We do not wish to harm players, but we will execute our duty.”

“Kaiden, don’t engage!” Ironstride warned. “We can’t win this!”

But Liri stepped forward, her small form trembling. “Wait!"

The Inquisitor looked down at her. “Come willingly, fragment. Your corruption will be contained. The sun’s wrath must be appeased.”

“I’m not corrupt,” Liri said quietly, voice shaking. “And you know it.”

“What you are is irrelevant. What you represent is a threat.” The Inquisitor’s expression was cold. “The Court has decided. You will be brought to judgment.”

Liri’s eyes filled with tears. “I just want to go home.”

“Your home is lost. The Unseelie Court cannot protect you from what is coming.”

The Enforcer and Warden moved to surround them, cutting off escape routes.

  [Warning: Surrounded]

  [Combat initiation imminent]

Ironstride made a split-second decision. She activated Guardian’s Challenge, forcing all three NPCs’ aggro onto her.

  [Skill: Guardian’s Challenge]

Effect: All nearby enemies must target caster

  Duration: 5 seconds

  “GO!” she shouted.

The moment the Enforcers’ attention locked on Ironstride, Kaiden grabbed Liri and ran. Naō threw a Philosopher’s Assault flask at their feet as the explosion created a wall of damaging smoke.

  [Damage: -450 (x3)]

  [Vision Obscured]

They burst through the north gate.

  [Zone Transition: Leaving Ashglass Hollow]

  [Safe Zone: Disabled]

The moment they crossed the threshold, the event timer stopped.

  [World Event: Seelie Judgment Escaped]

Outcome: Seelie reputation decreased significantly (Hostile)

Ashglass Hollow marked as restricted zone for 24 hours (in-game time)

  Alternative routes unlocked

Ironstride caught up seconds later, breathing hard. “That was too close.”

“Why didn’t they follow?” Naō asked, looking back. The Enforcers stood at the gate but didn’t pursue beyond it.

“Jurisdiction rules,” Ironstride said. “Safe zones have enforcement boundaries. They can pursue inside, but once we left the settlement, they’d need a sanctioned hunt order to follow.”

Kaiden looked down at Liri. She was crying silently, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Hey,” he said gently, kneeling. “You okay?”

She shook her head. “We need to reach the Court. Before they get a hunt order. Before they....” She looked up at the sky. “Before the sun decides it doesn’t need them anymore.”

  “What do you mean?”

“The Seelie think I’m dangerous because I saw what’s really happening in the temples. The sun isn’t dying because of the Unseelie.” Her voice dropped to barely a whisper. “It’s dying because something broke. Something both courts were supposed to protect together. And now they’re fighting over who gets to control what’s left.”

[Quest Updated: Child of the Bloom]

Objective: Escort Liri to the Unseelie Court

  Status: URGENT

Time Limit: Unknown (Proceed immediately recommended)

Warning: Delay may result in catastrophic consequences

Note: Seelie Court has issued tracking protocols

  A new notification appeared.

  [Faction Status: Seelie Court]

  Reputation: Hostile (-1,200)

  Status: Marked for Retrieval

Effect: Seelie NPCs Level 20+ will aggro on sight within their territories

Kaiden read it, then looked at his party. “Looks like we’re committed.”

“Unseelie Court,” Ironstride confirmed. “How far?”

Kaiden checked the map. “Northeast. Through the Bramble Veil and into the Twilight Expanse. Maybe two hours on mounts.”

  “Then we ride.”

They mounted up. As they rode northeast toward Unseelie territory, Kaiden couldn’t shake the Inquisitor’s words.

The sun’s wrath must be appeased.

What did that mean? And why did it sound like the Seelie Court was preparing for something far worse than just factional conflict?

Liri’s grip tightened on his cloak.

He didn’t ask. She’d tell them when she was ready.

Right now, they just needed to get her somewhere safe.
