Chapter Fifty-Five: Branching Shadows

The Dimming Wilds stretched endlessly ahead of them as an expanse of violet haze and glowing bark, where even the trees seemed to come alive. Their roots clawed toward a twilight sky that never changed, and the wind carried a soft hum like a dying song. The path was silent except for the crunch of brittle vines beneath their boots. Liri kept close, her pale eyes flicking toward every flicker of light between the roots.

They walked for another mile before the faint outline of a structure appeared through the haze. A sprawl of stone huts wrapped in vines, lights pulsing faintly beneath a canopy of luminous branches.

Aggro Suspended | LP Regen Stabilized | Rest Functions Available Faction Alignment: Unseelie +3

Global chat bubbles filled the air near the gate.

  “That’s Ghost, right?”

“He’s still unregistered. How’s he not banned yet?”

  “Dev oversight, probably.”

Kaiden ignored the whispers. He’d stopped trying to correct them weeks ago. Every time he showed up in a new hub, the name “Ghost” followed him like a curse.

Liri tugged gently at his sleeve, her voice quieter than usual. “They’re scared of what they don’t understand.”

He looked down at her, startled by how natural her tone sounded now. It wasn’t the sing-song cadence of an NPC anymore, just a girl talking. “You can tell that?”

She nodded. “Curiosity turns into fear, doesn’t it?”

Kaiden didn’t answer. He wasn’t sure he wanted to.

Inside the outpost, activity buzzed like a hive. Player traders haggled over ingredients, others posted recruitment messages for dungeon runs. A board near the gate shimmered with regional missions, glowing with tiers and requirements.

Ironstride stopped beside him. “Our contact’s inside. Guy goes by Ashlander. You’ll want to hear this.”

They followed her through the central hall, a wooden structure latticed with black and silver ornaments. The air smelled faintly of damp soil and iron. A figure sat near the back, sharpening a blade that glistened under the surrounding light. His armor, was the color of silver, and a dull color of ash.

Ashlander looked up before they even spoke.

“Ashlander,” Ironstride said. “Got a moment?”

He smiled without showing teeth. “Against my better judgment.”

When his gaze slid over Kaiden. There was a flicker of recognition of Kaiden.

“You’re the Dusk Bringer, right?” he said. “Hard not to remember that aura after your little overflow show.”

His shoulders tensed. “You were there?”

“Everyone saw it.” Ashlander smirked. “Half the server thought it was a cutscene. The other half called it a bug.”

Ashlander leaned back in his chair, the motion slow and deliberate. “So. CrimsonCrow. He passed through here before the last expansion, always quiet and calculating. Had another player with him back then by the name of AchillesHeal.”

The sound of his name hit Kaiden like it struck his chest. “You knew Alex?”

“Not well.” Ashlander looked away, scratching the edge of his blade with a whetstone. “They said they were looking for something unnatural. Didn’t say what. Joined up with something, called themselves The Black Dhalia. Sounded like a joke, but… the name definitely stuck.”

  Kaiden frowned. “The Black Dhalia?”

This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

Ashlander shrugged. “No idea what it meant. Maybe it was just a random thing. I didn’t ask questions back then. Crow mentioned it once like it was important, then never again. After that, they started acting… off.”

Ironstride folded her arms. “Off how?”

Ashlander’s eyes darkened. “They left as friends, came back strangers. Crow was distant, Achilles, didn’t trust Crow anymore. You could feel the tension when they entered a room. Players avoided them.”

Kaiden’s hand tightened on his knee. That doesn’t sounds like Alex though, he thought. Why didn’t he tell me anything?

Ashlander continued, lowering his voice. “They hit Level 15 not long after. I don’t know what they found, but whatever it was, it changed them.”

Naō raised a brow. “You think it’s connected to the Photosphere?”

Ashlander paused. “Photosphere? Never heard of it.”

Ironstride gave Kaiden a sidelong look. He avoided her eyes.

Ashlander went on, unaware. “After they split, Crow went south. Said he had to confirm something about the light. Achilles went his own way, saw he was in a group with Crow. Then the logs were wiped clean a week ago.”

Kaiden swallowed hard. “You never heard from them again?”

“Not until now.” Ashlander met his gaze. “You’re the first to mention them in a while.”

Silence stretched between them. The hum of the outpost filled it, the faint drone of market chatter, distant footsteps, the creak of wind through the rafters.

Kaiden finally asked, “If Crow and Alex joined the Black Dhalia… what was it? A guild? A secret group?”

Ashlander gave a short, humorless laugh. “Wish I knew. People called it a rumor, like the devs’ joke clan. But Crow treated it seriously. Said they were ‘the ones watching the end.’ Didn’t mean much to me.”

Kaiden’s mind flashed with memory: Alex’s grin during their last dungeon run, the half-joking phrase, You ever feel like the sun’s watching back?

Back then, it had sounded like nonsense. Now it didn’t.

When Ashlander excused himself to fetch another drink, the three gathered near the quest boards. The soft glow of the interface illuminated their faces.

Naō broke the quiet first. “So that’s it? Trail ends here?”

Kaiden didn’t answer immediately. His thoughts were spinning. The day after Alex’s funeral, the way Francesca had demanded the orb. “It doesn’t belong to you.”

“She’s not a player,” Kaiden said aloud, more to himself than anyone else. “She shouldn’t have known about any of this. About the Photosphere.”

Ironstride frowned. “You sure she’s not some dev rep? Or like a Beta tester?”

Kaiden shrugged. He wasn't so sure. Naō nudged him. “You good?”

Kaiden nodded slowly. “Yeah. I just… wish I could ask her more.”

Liri, standing beside him, looked up. “Maybe she remembers.”

He turned to her. “Remembers what?”

She tilted her head slightly. “Things the world wants you to forget.”

Her words shouldn’t have made sense, but somehow, they did. Kaiden stared at her, unsure whether she was glitching or speaking the truth.

Naō crossed his arms. “So what now? No leads. No guild. No Crow. Nothing.”

Kaiden finally exhaled. “We do what we always do. Level up. Alex gave me the Photosphere for a reason. If I keep progressing, maybe I’ll reach the same places he did.”

Ironstride smiled faintly. “Grinding for closure. Not a bad strategy.”

Naō nodded, grinning. “Then here’s to over-grinding.”

Kaiden smirked back, though the ache in his chest didn’t fade. “And to answers.”

They moved toward the mission boards as Ashlander turned to greet another party.

The boards glowed with open contracts and quest tiers.

Main Questline – Collapse of Day: Collect corrupted fauna samples near the Dimming Sun Temple.

Regional Missions: Purge Twilight Wraith nests | Stabilize beacons.

  Faction Branches:

  Seelie (LOCKED)

Unseelie (Hidden – Requires Envoy Access)

Kaiden tried to select a Seelie task. The interface flashed red.

[Access Denied – Seelie Alignment Lost]

  He sighed. “Guess that’s permanent.”

Ironstride glanced over his shoulder. “We’ll take the regional ones, combine them with the main line. Efficient farming.”

Naō stretched. “Well, the day’s not getting any brighter. Might as well start grinding before night resets.”

Kaiden didn’t answer. Instead, he shifted his attention inward.

It wasn’t something he could explain, but the Photosphere felt heavier. Like a coiled presence just under his skin. Then a string of words appeared before him:

[You have acquired Fragment 2/7: The Bloomveil Pact]

Resonance Triggered: Truth + Memory Alignment Achieved

Fragment Logged in Archives | Lore Updated

“When roots shared breath with stone, harmony shattered. Some chose silence. Others, survival.”

Kaiden blinked. The message faded just as quickly.

Naō’s eyes flicked to Kaiden. “Did… did your screen just flash?”

Kaiden slowly nodded. “Yeah. I think… I just unlocked another fragment.”

Ironstride raised a brow. “From a conversation?”

Kaiden leaned back and exhaled. “I guess that’s how it works. The Photosphere isn’t just tied to combat. It responds to… resonance, maybe. Or Moments in the game? It’s like it’s listening, watching how close I get to what really happened. Sometimes it’s a fight, sometimes a conversation or a quest. But every time, it’s something important.”

Kaiden looked back toward Ashlander’s table. He was already deep in conversation with another group, his voice lost in the hum of players and flickering light. For a moment, Kaiden wondered if Ashlander had truly told him everything, or if the man knew more than he was willing to admit.

Liri’s voice broke the silence. “Was your friend like Crow?”

Kaiden blinked, glancing down at her. “No,” he said quietly. “Alex wasn’t like anyone.”

The three began preparing for departure.

Whatever this Black Dhalia is… whatever Alex found… I’ll find it too.
