Chapter Seventy-Four: The Belly of the Beast

  [Location: The Hollow Heart Chamber]

  [Boss Battle: Phase 1 Active]

The root came at him like a spear. Kaiden activated Vine Step. The suppression made every skill feel like dragging weights through mud. He stepped backward, but the root impaled stone where he’d been standing. Another root. Left side. Then another from above.

The Hollow Heart wasn’t attacking, It was hunting him like he was prey.

  [Boss Pattern: Root Maw Cycle]

Active Skills: Root Spear | Pulse Wave | Floor Rupture

Kaiden dodged right. A section of floor erupted beneath him as roots burst upward like a geyser of thorns.

  [Damage: -41 LP]

  [LP: 67/270]

Liri’s healing pulse healed him immediately.

  [HP Restored: +4%]

  [LP: 78/270]

But she was struggling. He could see it in the way her light flickered, and worse, she had range limits. When he moved too far, her healing couldn’t reach him at all.

“Nyte!” she called out, desperate. “I can’t heal you, you’re too far!”

He circled back toward her, scythe deflecting another root strike. The impact jarred his arms, sent vibrations through his avatar’s skeletal system.

  [Damage: Partial Block]

  [-23 LP]

His LP dropped to 20%. One good hit and he was dead.

Twilight Rend carved across the nearest root. It took only minimal damage. The Hollow Heart’s HP bar hadn’t budged. These roots weren’t the boss itself, just extensions. He needed to hit the core.

But the core was surrounded by a forest of thorned limbs, each one moving independently, creating a wall of constant motion between him and any weak point.

[Weak Point: Protected by Root Shell]

  [Skill: Pulse Wave]

  Effect: Knockback + DoT

Kaiden braced for it but couldn’t fully resist. The wave picked him up and threw him backward fifteen feet. He hit the ground hard and when he got up his LP was flashing red.

  [Damage: -34 LP]

  [Status Applied: Internal Bleed (DoT)]

[LP Drain: -6/sec for 10 seconds]

“No, no, no.” Liri went over to him, healing pulse firing continuously. But the DoT was eating through his LP faster than she could restore it.

  [LP: 21/270]

  [LP: 15/270]

  [LP: 9/270]

Kaiden tried to reposition, but his movement was sluggish. Suppression + DoT + critical LP = death spiral.

  [Boss Skill: Pulse Collapse]

Effect: Gravitational pull toward core | Continuous LP drain

Kaiden felt the pull immediately across the arena floor toward the Hollow Heart’s center, where that massive maw was opening wider.

He planted his scythe into the ground, using it as an anchor to steady him, but the LP drain was vicious.

  [LP: -12 LP]

  [LP: 3/270]

His health bar was evaporating. Liri’s healing couldn’t reach him, and she was being pulled too, struggling to fight against the suction.

His real-world heart was pounding. Not game feedback his Real heart was pounding. Like his actual body was responding to the avatar’s critical state. He’d felt this before. After fights that went bad. After the Photosphere had first activated. That bleed-through effect where the game stopped being just a game.

  [LP: 5/270]

  [CRITICAL: 0.3%]

  [Warning]

The scythe was dragging through the dirt and his grip was slipping from the surface.

He was going to die here.

  Alone. Just like Alex.

  [System Alert: Familiar Instability Detected]

Liri’s form flickered into something like a transformation.

Her small sprite body expanded, reshaped in a matter of a few seconds.

  [Emergency Form: Unseelie Wyvern]

  Status: Familiar override activated

  She wasn’t small anymore.

Six feet of violet-black scales. Wings that span twice her body length. Antler-like horns glowing with bioluminescent patterns that pulsed in rhythm with Kaiden’s Photosphere.

She shrieked and dove for him. Her claws caught Kaiden’s shoulders.

  [Familiar Assist: Emergency Extraction]

Her wings beat frantically, fighting against the Pulse suction. She lifted him, not high, she wasn’t strong enough for his full weight. The Hollow Heart’s maw snapped shut where he’d been a second before, thorns grinding against stone.

“Hold on!” Liri’s voice sounded different in her wyvern form.

She sounded like she was struggling. Her wings beating too fast and desperate. She couldn’t maintain altitude like this for long.

A root spear lashed out and clipped her left wing.

  They fell.

Liri hit first, her wyvern form slamming into hardened bark. Kaiden landed beside her.

  [LP: 1/270]

His screen went dark at the edges.

  [FLATLINE IMMINENT]

This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.

Liri reverted to sprite form, too damaged to maintain transformation. She tried to crawl toward him but couldn’t move through the damage.

  [Boss Skill: Execution Pulse]

  [Target: Nyte]

  [Damage: LETHAL]

Kaiden’s real-world vision was going white. His hands weren’t responding to inputs. His heart felt like it was trying to beat out of his chest.

  This was it.

  A death timer ticked down.

  [4 seconds...]

The Hollow Heart’s core flared with blinding light.

  [3 seconds...]

  Kaiden couldn’t move.

  [2 seconds...]

A figure dropped from above like a meteor. Her shield raised with green-gold light blazing from it.

  Ironstride.

She stood between Kaiden and the Hollow Heart, and the impact cracked the arena floor.

  [Party Member Joined: Ironstride]

  [Reinforcements: Active]

The Execution Pulse fired. It hit her shield dead-center.

The light wrapped around her shield as energy dispersed across an invisible barrier that blossomed outward in geometric patterns, brown and gold.

Kaiden’s HUD flashed with a notification.

Skill Type: Absolute Defense + Reflection

Effect: Absorbs all incoming damage for duration | Stores energy for counter-release

  Duration: 15 seconds

  Cooldown: 180 seconds

The barrier expanded, covering Kaiden and Liri completely. A dome of radiant bark-and-gold light that pulsed with the same rhythm as both their Photospheres.

  The pressure released.

Kaiden gasped. As air flooded back into his lungs. His avatar’s LP stabilized at 1.

  [LP: 1/270]

  [Status: Stabilized by external barrier]

“Naō!” Ironstride’s voice cut through the chaos. “NOW!”

  [Party Member Joined: Mixmaster]

  [Emergency Restoration Applied]

  [LP Restored: +45%]

  [LP: 124/270]

“Stay down,” Naō said, already prepping his next flask. “We’ve got this.”

The Hollow Heart raged as root spears hammered against Angel’s Mercy from all directions. Pulse waves crashed against the barrier like tsunami against breakwater. The boss’s core flared brighter, pouring everything into breaking through.

  [Damage Absorbed: 187 LP]

  [Damage Absorbed: 234 LP]

  [Damage Absorbed: 312 LP]

Each hit made the barrier pulse brighter. The stored energy building.

Ironstride stood at the center, taking in the damage. The Hollow Heart launched its ultimate assault, every root attacked simultaneously, the core itself unleashing a beam of concentrated light.

  [Boss Skill: Convergent Annihilation]

  [Damage: 2,847 (combined) LP]

  Angel’s Mercy absorbed it all.

  Then a new message appeared.

  [Angel’s Mercy: Maximum Capacity Reached]

  [Stored Damage: 4,923 LP]

  [Counter-Attack: READY]

Ironstride’s voice cut through the noise, calm and absolute.

  “Kaiden, MOVE.”

He grabbed Liri and activated Vine Step, stepping out of the arena’s edge. Naō was already there.

She aimed the shield at the Hollow Heart’s core. And released.

  [Skill: Angel’s Mercy — Reflection]

Damage Return: 4,923 (absorbed damage x1.0) LP]

  Type: Concentrated beam

  Effect: Ignore all defenses

A column of radiant energy tore through the Hollow Heart’s through the protective layers, and detonated against the core itself.

The boss didn’t have a chance to react or protect itself.

The light carved through its center, vaporizing corrupted tissue, shattering the bioluminescent veins, cracking the seed-shell into a thousand fragments.

The roots holding it aloft snapped. The Hollow Heart fell.

  [BOSS DEFEATED: THE HOLLOW HEART]

  [Total Damage Dealt: 4,923 LP]

[Combat Time: 6 minutes 47 seconds]

  [Dungeon Boss Cleared]

  Silence.

Just silence and the fading glow of dispersing energy.

Kaiden stared at where the boss had been. Then at Ironstride, who was still standing there, shield lowered, breathing hard.

  “Oh crap,” Naō said quietly.

  The system chimed.

  The notifications finally stopped.

Kaiden just stood there, staring at his new level. His hands were trembling like he couldn’t control himself.

He had leveled up, sure, but all he could think about was that death timer. Those five seconds watching his screen go dark. The helplessness. The certainty that he was about to die, really die, and there was nothing he could do about it.

  “Kaiden.”

Ironstride’s voice pulled him back. She’d walked over. The adrenaline was wearing off for her too.

  “You okay?” she asked.

He opened his mouth. Closed it, then tried again. “I don’t know.”

“That’s fair.” She sat down hard on the arena floor. “That was too close.”

“I almost died.” The words came out flat. He stopped, his chest felt tight. “Alex went through that. Whatever happened to him, he felt that.”

Naō had moved closer. “You didn’t die. We got to you in time.”

“This time.” Kaiden looked at his LP bar. But he could still feel that measuring pressuring weighing on him. That moment when it hit almost zero. When his real-world heart had shuttered. “What happens when there’s no one to pull me out?”

None of them had an answer.

Liri walked over. She didn’t say anything. Just stayed close.

After a long moment, Ironstride stood. “We turn in the quest. We go to the Solarium. We do the class advancement. And then we log off and take a break. No dungeon runs for at least a day.”

  “Agreed,” Naō said immediately.

Kaiden nodded slowly. His heart rate was finally coming down. The shaking in his hands easing.

They collected the loot drops in silence. The Hollow Heart’s remains had fully dissipated, leaving only the quest items and materials behind. Right now, he just wanted out of this temple.

The exit tunnel had appeared after the boss died. A root passage leading back to the surface. They walked through it in silence, each processing what had just happened.

When they emerged into Ashglass Hollow’s starlit forest, the oppressive atmosphere finally lifted.

[Instance Clear: Dimming Sun Temple Deep Layer]

  [Time Elapsed: 1h 18m]

  [Party Performance: S-Rank]

“S-Rank,” Naō said, reading the notification. “We got S-Rank despite you almost dying.”

“Because Ironstride one-shot the boss,” Kaiden said.

  “Still counts.”

The walk was quiet, but not uncomfortable. Just three players coming down from a fight that had pushed them harder than anything before.

“So,” Naō said eventually. “Class advancement. That’s big. You can change your class now. rightt?”

“It opens up advanced paths,” Ironstride said. “Specialized builds, unique skills, faction-specific options.”

They reached the hub, and immediately Kaiden felt the shift in atmosphere. Other players were milling about, from late night grinders, people on their third or fourth session. The quest turn-in NPC stood in the main hall, glowing with the telltale quest marker.

Kaiden approached, pulling up the quest log.

  [Quest Complete: Severance Protocol]

  Objective: Defeat The Hollow Heart

  Turn in: Severance Protocol Key

  He accepted the prompt.

“You have completed what many could not,” the NPC intoned. “The Dimming Sun Temple’s corruption has been purged. The Covenant thanks you.”

Kaiden accepted the rewards and immediately felt the weight lift. One major questline down. But first, class advancement.

  “Solarium?” Ironstride asked.

  “Solarium,” Kaiden confirmed.

They headed out of the Covenant hub, following the warp gate markers toward the temple district where the Solarium waited.
