[Location: Ashglass Outpost Northern Plaza]
[Session Time Remaining: 9h 13m]
The teleport fade cleared, dumping them back into Ashglass. Kaiden’s boots hit cobblestone with that satisfying thunk that made virtual feel real. Around them, the outpost hummed with its usual energy, NPCs barking orders, players clustered around quest boards, the rhythmic clang-clang-clang of the forge bleeding through the market district.
Liri materialized beside him with a small pop of violet light, immediately grabbing his cloak.
"We’re back! That was fun. Can we fight another big tree?"
Naō groaned, stumbling as he landed. “Kid, I need you to understand something very important about the concept of ‘reading the room’."
Kaiden couldn’t help but grin, ruffling Liri’s hair. "Maybe later. We've got paperwork first."
“Boooring,” she sang, but didn’t let go of his cloak.
Ironstride was the last to fully materialize, and Kaiden caught the way her jaw was set tight, like she was holding something back. Her hand drifted to her inventory, then away. Then back.
[Quest Marker Updated: Report to Ashglass Command (140m)]
“You good?” Kaiden asked.
She blinked, refocusing on him. “Yeah. Fine. Just... thinking.”
“That’s dangerous,” he joked, but then got more serious. “Was it about the boss fight?”
“About the part where my gear tried to do something and couldn’t quite figure out what.” Her voice was level, but there was an edge underneath it he could sense. “That normal for you?”
Kaiden thought back to the tournament, the moment everything had snapped into focus, power flooding through him like a dam breaking. “Normal? No. But it happened.”
Naō sidled up between them, flask already in hand. “Look at it this way, at least yours gave you a warning. Kaiden’s just exploded mid-combat and turned him into an anime protagonist.”
“Still standing right here,” Kaiden muttered.
“Yeah, and we’re grateful you didn’t drown the entire arena.” Naō grinned. “Mostly grateful. It was very cinematic.”
[Party Buff Active: Dual Core Proximity]
? DEF +5%
? AGI +5%
Duration: Maintained while party members within range
“Alright,” Naō said, stretching his arms overhead. “Before we go do the boring NPC dialog speedrun, I vote we hit a vendor. I’ll need to restock on materials, I’m down to my last three Corrosive Draughts, and that’s not enough for whatever nightmare the devs throw at us next.”
“Food vendor first,” Liri declared. “I saw one with the shiny apples.”
Kaiden glanced at Ironstride. She shrugged. “I could use a minute before Command anyway.”
They detoured toward the market ring, weaving through players comparing loot and arguing about optimal builds. A pair of Reapers were mid-debate about AGI scaling. A Botanist was trying to sell crafted buff food to anyone who’d listen.
The stall Liri had spotted was run by an NPC with flour-dusted hands and an unnaturally cheerful smile. His wares glowed faintly with buff indicators, just the standard +5% HP regen or +3 AGI for ten minutes.
Liri accepted a candied apple slice like it was legendary loot, eyes going wide. “This is amazing!”
Kaiden bought a skewer of grilled mushrooms that gave a minor DEF buff. Naō leaned against the stall, popping a stamina-boosting pastry into his mouth. “You know,” he said around the bite, “for a game about killer plants and apocalyptic sun gods, the food vendors are weirdly cozy.”
“Gotta keep the player retention high,” Kaiden said. “Can't have everyone logging off traumatized.”
“Too late for that,” Ironstride muttered, but there was almost a smile there.
Kaiden caught her staring at her open inventory again.
He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Hey. You’ve been stuck in your menu since we ported back.”
She closed it with a quick gesture. “It’s nothing.”
“It's not nothing.”
Ironstride's eyes flicked to him, then away. “During the fight, I felt…” She paused, choosing words carefully. “Like standing on the edge of a cliff you can’t see. One more step and I fall. Or fly. Not sure which.”
Kaiden nodded slowly. He knew that feeling. The moment before Overflow kicked in, when the game was asking a question his body had to answer without hesitation.
“Mine didn’t fully unlock until I was cornered,” he said. “Tournament. Crow trying to kill me. No way out. I don’t have to pick my choice of poison traumatic events, it was generous of enough to give it to me all at once.”
“So I just need to almost die in a live arena?” Ironstride’s tone was dry, but not dismissive. “Great. Love that for me.”
“Or,” Kaiden offered, “we figure out what the game wants before it forces the issue.”
She looked at him, really looked, like she was weighing whether that was possible.
“Yeah,” she said finally. “Let’s try that.”
Ashglass Command was exactly as welcoming as they’d left it: stressed NPCs of the commander standing over it all like a general watching her army get flanked.
She glanced up as they entered, eyes immediately locking onto the item Kaiden pulled from his inventory.
[Quest Item removed: Verdant Core Husk]
He placed it on the table. The husk pulsed once and green light bled into the map beneath it. New corruption markers appeared like spreading ink, following old root networks across previously stable zones.
“Worse than we thought,” the commander muttered, dragging the map overlay with two fingers. “It's not random. It’s following infrastructure.”
[Quest Complete: Collapse of Day Heart of the Grove (Inner Roots)]
[EXP Gained: +2,100]
[Verdant Coins: +350]
[Item Acquired: Rootbound Sigil Ring]
[New Achievement Unlocked: Root Delver]
Successfully cleared a corruption-adjacent dungeon.
Reward: Passive Trait — Myco-Hardened
Spore damage reduced by 15%. Plant-based status effects 20% shorter duration.
Naō whistled. “Okay, that's useful. No more choking on gas clouds every five seconds."
The commander tapped the data readout hovering above the husk. “Your readings confirm it. The rot isn’t spreading randomly, it’s using pre-existing veins. If we don’t sever the connection at the source, every major hub will be compromised within a month. Game-time."
Kaiden's HUD pinged.
[New Main Quest Available: Collapse of Day, Severance Protocol]
Objective: Travel to Dimming Sun Temple (Deep Layer) and neutralize the core breach
Recommended Party Level: 14+
Warning: High-difficulty raid-tier content
Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.
Note: Unseelie alignment may trigger additional encounters
Naō leaned over to read his screen. “Oh good. Back there again, and raid tier. My favorite words after ‘permadeath’ and ‘unbalanced encounter’."
The commander slid three vials across the table, translucent green liquid that shimmered like captured light.
[Item Acquired: Severance Tonic (x3)]
Effect: Grants immunity to Root Pressure environmental debuffs
Duration: 10 minutes
Cooldown: Cannot be used consecutively
“You’ll need those,” she said. “The deep temple has atmospheric effects that bypass standard resistances. Even Dayslayers with high corruption tolerance get shredded without protection.”
Ironstride pocketed hers. “Anything else we should know?”
The commander hesitated just a fraction of a second, but Kaiden caught it.
“There’s been increased activity in the region,” she said carefully. “Other high-level parties attempting entry. Most don’t make it past the outer sanctum.”
“Most?” Kaiden asked.
“Two parties cleared the threshold. Both flagged as... unusual.”
Kaiden raised his brow. “Unusual how?”
The commander pulled up a separate data stream, player tags, timestamps, incomplete combat logs.
“Gear signatures we couldn't identify. Skills outside normal parameters. Environmental reactions that shouldn’t be possible.”
They stepped back into the plaza. The in-game sky had shifted. Ashglass’s perpetual twilight deepening into dusk.
Naō stretched, yawning. “Alright. Game plan. I vote we grind some EXP before tackling raid content. Maybe hit up a few side quests, get everyone leveled up a bit.” He pulled up the quest board interface, scrolling through available contracts. “There's a Thornling nest suppression that’s been sitting here for days. Decent EXP, low stress.”
“Low stress,” Ironstride repeated. “In this game?”
“Relatively low stress,” Naō amended. “Just us and a bunch of angry plant monsters.”
Kaiden considered it. They were close to the level requirement for the Deep Temple, and going in under-leveled was asking for a wipe.
“Yeah,” he said. “Let's do it. Liri, you good for another run?”
She pumped a small fist. “Yes! I want to try my new healing spell!”
[Quest Accepted: Thornling Nest Suppression]
Recommended Party Level: 12-13
Location: Pale Grove — Western Thickets
Objective: Clear 3 Thornling spawning nests
Reward: +800 EXP | Crafting Materials | Minor Verdant Coins
The teleport crystal near the plaza edge shimmered with available destinations. Kaiden selected Pale Grove, and the familiar countdown began.
[Teleporting in 5... 4... 3...]
“Here's hoping the 'low stress' part actually holds,” Ironstride muttered.
[Location: Pale Grove — Western Thickets]
[Time: In-Game Dusk Cycle]
[Party Status: Stable]
They materialized on the edge of a dense thicket where pale-barked trees twisted into natural archways. The ground here was soft, moss-covered, dotted with mushroom clusters that glowed faint blue in the dimming light.
[Environmental Effect: Dusk Cycle Active]
? Monster aggro radius reduced by 15%
? Visibility decreased
? Shadow-element skills gain +10% effectiveness
Kaiden's scythe materialized in his hand with its usual flicker of water-dark energy. “Alright. Three nests. Naō, you've got the map marker?”
“Yup.” Naō pulled up the minimap overlay, highlighting three pulsing red dots scattered through the thicket. “First one’s about two hundred meters northwest. Should be a straight shot.”
They moved as a unit. The thicket’s ambient sound pressed in: rustling leaves, distant creature calls, the soft drip-drip of water from overhead branches.
[Aggro Detected: Thornling Scouts (x4)]
Level: 11 | Type: Plant Construct
Four spindly creatures emerged from the undergrowth, humanoid frames built from twisted vines and thorned branches, their heads crowned with spiked seed pods. They moved in twitchy, jerking motions like stop-motion animations.
Ironstride raised her shield. “Don't let them surround us.”
The first Thornling lunged. Ironstride caught it mid-leap with a shield bash.
[Skill: Shield Counter]
Damage: -72 LP | Stagger Applied (2s)
Kaiden was already moving, scythe spinning in a tight arc. Twilight Rend carved through the staggered enemy's torso.
[Critical Hit!]
Damage: -156 LP | Weak Point Exploited
The Thornling burst into fragments of vine and light.
[Enemy Defeated: Thornling Scout]
EXP: +65
Naō's flask shattered against the second Thornling, acid eating through its bark-plated chest.
[Skill: Corrosive Draught]
Effect: DEF -10% | DoT Active (12s)
Damage: -45 LP | -8/sec
“Liri, on me!” Kaiden called.
She floated closer, hands glowing with soft green light.
[Familiar Skill: Healing Presence] Effect: Party HP +3%/sec (8s duration)
The remaining Thornlings fell quickly. Ironstride controlling aggro, Kaiden chaining high-damage combos, Naō managing debuffs and cleanses.
[Combat Complete]
Total EXP: +260
They pressed forward, following the quest marker toward the first nest. The nest was exactly what the name suggested: a twisted mass of thorned branches woven into a dome, pulsing with sickly green light. Smaller Thornlings crawled across its surface like worker ants.
[Objective: Destroy Thornling Nest (1/3)]
Warning: Destroying nest will trigger defensive spawn
Ironstride moved to the center of the clearing. “Then we let them come. I'll anchor forward.”
Kaiden nodded, positioning himself at an angle that gave him clear sight lines. “Liri, stay behind Ironstride. If anything gets through.”
“Okay!”
Naō pulled a different vial from his belt, this one glowing orange with crackling energy inside.
[Item: Volatile Catalyst]
Effect: High burst damage to structures | Triggers enemy spawn on impact
"Moment of truth," he said, then hurled it.
The vial arced through the air in slow motion, spinning end-over-end before, CRACK. The nest exploded in a shower of toxic pollen.
[Defensive Spawn Triggered!]
Enemies: Thornling Defenders (x6) | Thornling Brute (x1)
Six Defenders erupted from the surrounding brush, followed by something significantly larger. A hulking mass of root and stone, easily twice the size of the scouts.
[Enemy: Thornling Brute — Level 13]
Traits: Heavy Armor | Ground Slam | Thorn Volley
The Brute charged fot Ironstride immediately. She planted her feet, shield angled. "Come on, then!"
[Skill: Fortified Presence]
Effect: Aggro Hard-Lock | DEF +10% (8s)
The Brute slammed into her shield with a sound like a car crash.
[Blocked!]
Damage Absorbed: 84 LP
The Defenders swarmed from all sides. Kaiden activated Petal Echoes, two copies flickering into existence beside him. “Naō, debuff the big guy. I've got adds.”
“On it!”
[Skill: Catalyst Ricochet]
The vial bounced once off a tree, twice off a rock, each impact applying a stacking debuff before detonating against the Brute's chest.
[Effect: DEF -15% (stacked x3) | Damage: -95 LP]
Kaiden and his copies dove into the swarm of Defenders. Scythe strikes blurred together. Twilight Rend into Riptide Fang into Abyssal Bloom, each hit chaining into the next with practiced efficiency. Damage numbers cascaded:
[-142 LP]
[-156 LP]
[-88 LP]
[-92 LP]
[-134 LP]
Three Defenders down. Three to go, but the Brute wasn't waiting politely. It reared back, thorned limbs spreading wide.
[Skill Detected: Thorn Volley]
Warning: AoE Attack Seek Cover
“DOWN,” Ironstride yelled.
Kaiden dropped into a slide as dozens of thorn projectiles launched outward in a spreading cone. Most slammed into Ironstride's raised shield. A few got through.
[Damage: -34 LP, -28 LP]
[Status Applied: Minor Bleed]
Liri's healing aura pulsed around the area
[Healing Presence Active]
Party HP +3%/sec
“Thanks, Liri,” Kaiden called, rolling back to his feet.
The last three Defenders converged on his position. Perfect.
“Overflow.”
The familiar surge of power flooded through him, water-shadow rippling outward, scythe blades extending with crackling energy.
ATK +35% | AGI +25%
LP Drain: 2%/sec | LP Regen: Disabled
He moved through the Defenders like they were standing still. Ecliptic Pulse detonating in the center of the group, shadow petals shredding bark and vine.
[Combo Chain: 3x]
Damage: -189 LP -201 LP -185 LP
[Enemies Defeated: Thornling Defenders (x3)]
The Brute bellowed, turning its attention fully to him now.
“Yeah,” Kaiden said, breathing hard. “Bring it.”
The Brute charged. Kaiden sidestepped, trailing water in his wake. The boss's fist cratered the ground where he'd been standing.
Naō's voice cut through: “Root damage exposed. Back of the neck.”
Kaiden saw it. A cluster of glowing nodes where the spine met the skull.
He stepped forward with Vine Step, appearing on the Brute's shoulders.
[Skill: Bleeding Horizon]
Damage: -234 LP, Critical Hit!
[RD Point: Destroyed]
The Brute's roar turned into a gurgling collapse. It toppled forward, crashing into the dirt.
[Enemy Defeated: Thornling Brute]
EXP: +420
[Nest Destroyed: 1/3]
Overflow faded. Kaiden landed hard, catching himself on one knee.
[Overflow Deactivated]
LP: 54%
Naō jogged over, tonic already in hand. “You know, one of these days you’re gonna remember you have a health bar before it turns yellow.”
"Where's the fun in that?" Kaiden accepted the tonic, feeling LP tick back up.
Ironstride approached. “Nice one. Looks like there is two more nests.”
“Yup, two more,” Kaiden confirmed.
Liri floated down, eyes wide. “That was so cool. You were like whoosh and the monster was like crash and—“
“Yeah,” Naō laughed. “That's pretty much how it goes.”
They looted the boss, crafting materials, minor coins, a chance at rare drops and headed for nest two.
