The corridor leading toward the Hollow Heart twisted downward like a serpent’s spine. With each step, the environment became heavier, as if the air itself was catapulting into itself. The fungal glow shifted in tone, once green, now flushed with red hues, as though the very walls were reacting to their presence. The spores thickened in their path, sticking to gear and skin like static.
Ironstride tested her footing. “Careful with your footing. It’s getting softer, which means it’ll be a weak footing and who know what the floor’s effects might be.”
Kaiden nodded. “Talk about walking on eggshells, or maybe, moss I should say.”
Naō paused near a cluster of budding mushrooms and flicked open his crafting kit. “Give me a sec. I’ve been sitting on something new. It should come in handy.”
He pulled a vial with a silver base and green fluid, tossing it in a short arc ahead of them. The glass broke silently against the ground, releasing a shimmering mist that cleared the spores from the air.
[Item Used: Windburst Tonic – AOE Hazard for 30 seconds]
Kaiden raised an eyebrow. “Since when do you have that?”
“Learned the recipe at the last level. Just wanted to take advantage of it now.” A soft glow surrounded Naō’s body as a second notification chimed.

New Skill: Echoflare Vial - Throws a volatile solution that detonates after impact, dealing initial fire damage and returning fire damage to attackers for 10 seconds.
“That’ll come in handy,” Naō grinned. “Anyone hit me or the zone I cast it in? They get burned for it.”
“Nice,” Ironstride muttered, “as long as it doesn’t burn me too.”
They continued onward.
???°?°???
A curve in the tunnel opened into a massive circular chamber. The floor was made of tangled roots forming a sunken basin, and the walls were pulsing with red light in slow rhythmic beats. In the center was a grotesque mass: fungal flesh, bark, and root fused into a massive bulb, half-wrapped around the stone wall. Veins fed into it from every direction. Its ‘face’ was a ring of twisted petals and black spore sacs. From it protruded thick tendrils, some inert, others twitching.
It didn’t move. It only pulsed like one giant sized heart.
[MID-BOSS ENCOUNTER: Mycobarrier Bio threat – Adaptive Core]
Ironstride shifted her stance. “Not charging that thing until we know what it does.”
“I’ll poke it,” Kaiden offered, already unsheathing his weapon.
He took a slow step forward. Then another.
At ten meters, the tendrils snapped forward. Kaiden dove sideways as one slammed the ground where he stood.

“Yup. It’s awake.”
The beast reared back, partially lifting from the wall. Its core glowed in brief flashes, first in its left shoulder, then right leg. The glow shifted with each second.
Naō cursed. “It’s moving the weak point,”
“Then we move faster,” Kaiden responded.
[Cell Exposed!]
He activated Vine Step, blinking to the beast’s flank and striking where the light moved. His blade hit solid bark. [-58 RD]
Ironstride rushed to intercept two tendrils sweeping the field. Fortified Presence flared as she drew their aggro, taking repeated hits to her defenses
“Keep up with the attacks!”
Naō dropped Echoflare Vial near the core. Fire exploded upward. [-45 RD] damage taken to its core cells. The beast slammed into the ground to extinguish the fire, and its tendrils retracted defensively.
Kaiden seized the moment.
He jumped off a twisting root, spun mid-air, and slammed his blade into the pulsing core. [Critical Hit – [-80 RD] Cells Exposed]. The Mycobarrier Beast shuddered violently. Spores burst from its body, and the entire cavern screamed.
But it didn’t die. The creature pulled back into the wall, its roots folded in behind it like a slammed door.
[Boss Escaped – Area Cleared Temporarily] EXP Earned
Kaiden landed hard, breathing heavy.
“Did it retreat?”
Ironstride wiped spore pulp off her gauntlet. “Looked more like it was buying time. It’s going to be waiting for us at the end of this.”
Naō pointed toward the rear of the chamber. “Hey, look at that? Safe zone. Light markers are active.”
The chamber beyond the fight zone was quiet and dry. A set of natural stone platforms glowed in blue, offering regeneration and temporary safety. They stepped onto them one at a time.
[Safe Zone – Regenerating LP/SP/GP]
[Note: Players cannot logout from within this zone.]
Kaiden leaned against the edge of the stone ring, rolling his shoulder. “Phew, least we’re getting close.”
Naō crouched nearby, reorganizing his vials. “These enemies are definitely adapting. That core moved like it knew what we were doing.”
Ironstride sat, removing her helmet. Her brown hair was damp from sweat, matted slightly from the humid heat.
Kaiden blinked. “First time I’ve seen your face.”
“Take a picture cause you won’t see it again” she replied, brushing a strand away from her sequin blue eyes, behind her ear.
Kaiden shrugged. He actually found her kind of pretty, especially the way the light of the forest reflected in her eyes.
“Didn’t say I hated it.”
Naō grinned. “He means thanks for tanking half the dungeon.”
She shrugged, wiping her blade. “Used to running solo. Never stuck with a group this long before.”
“Why?” Kaiden asked.
Ironstride hesitated. “No one kept up. Most people quit when the game gets to hard. They just want to farm experience and do any heavy lifting.”
Kaiden met her gaze. “So what made you stay this time?”
She looked at him, deadpan with pressed lips together. “Because you’re broken.”
Naō snorted.
Ironstride went on, “Fine. You might be annoying as hell, but you’re dedicated, and you take the game seriously. Plus, you pull aggro, like crazy, and you’re not a tank. Almost like the game knows something you don’t. I want to see how far that goes.”
Kaiden didn’t respond. Instead, he nodded, before looking toward the far wall.
His HUD blinked softly.
[ACHIEVEMENT PROGRESS: Hidden Trait – Sporeshield Core (1/3)]
He stared at it until it disappeared.
what’s up with that? He thought.
From the other side of the safe zone, a faint sound echoed through the hollow.
A child’s voice.
“Kaiden?”
He turned.
Nothing there.
Just a cluster of mushrooms vibrating faintly.
Naō walked over, curious, also having heard the voice. The mushrooms around the zone twitched again, and from their caps came another sound. This time, it was a woman’s voice:
“Are you coming home tonight?”
Naō furrowed his brow. “Sound’s traveling weird down here. That can’t be from this deep.”
Kaiden stood still. “Probably coming from the surface.”
Ironstride stood and retrieved her gear. “Either way, we should stay still too long. Let’s wrap this quest up.”
No one argued.
They walked toward the tunnel opening beyond the safe zone, where the mycelium turned crimson.
And from the roots above, another spore dropped, glowing faintly red.
The Hollow Heart waited.
