Chapter 2-1
Georgia's POV
I was shocked from my sleep with an arm going off. Reaching for where I’d left my phone the night before as I colpsed into bed I found fur instead. Opening my eyes I saw my cat, Lee enjoying the misguided grab, and enjoying even more as I reached under him to find my buzzing phone. Silencing the arm I squinted against the bring light from the screen just enough to make out that it was already one in the afternoon and I’d missed three calls from Rory. I had to be at work from six in the evenings now and I was expected on till two, something that was going to severely alter my sleeping schedule but the pay increase made it hard to care.
Calling Rory back I didn’t have to wait long with the phone picking up after two rings.
“What time do you call this then? You decided to be a dirty stop after you abandoned me?” Rory asked, his voice ft.
“My new morning with these changed hours apparently. Did you get home fine?”
“No thanks to you, those lovely vampires called me an Uber, they were talking about you, how was it?”
I got out of bed as he asked my feet hitting the wooden floor and my cat jumping off to chase them as I left for the bathroom.
“What were they saying? And how was what?”
I heard Rory ugh away from the phone before responding.
“The bite obviously, I was too out of it afterwards too really make out what they said, I got in and still felt out of it, made for a strange dream I’ll tell you.”
Going about my skincare for the morning I saw a new spot coming through on my cheek and could only ugh knowing of course I’d get one the first day I’ll be working with a vampire, lovely.
“I didn’t get bit, I didn’t chicken out, and she was nice but I got called in for an investigation. I had to turn up to a crime scene in that slip of fabric you called a dress, I was mortified.”
I heard him ugh louder than before and it was still evident as he tried to respond.
“Okay, that almost makes up for leaving me, how was it?”
Finishing up I left to go get changed, now I could pick my own uniform. I knew this was a task I definitely didn’t want Rory’s input on.
“It was a murder, she’d been drained by a vampire and it was brief, basically nothing we could see until all the tests are back and we have the vampire they’re assigning us to help. Oh and I think my new partner hates me already.”
“Did you abandon him with hungry vampires as well?” Rory teased.
“No he, I don’t know. I think he has some personal stuff going on and he very much doesn’t want this job and is very much offended that I’m excited for it. I also seemed to be too happy about attending a murder I think.”
“Give it time, you haven’t even started yet. He’ll come around, you're impossible to hate, you're too happy. I hate you for it.”
“I’m sorry about leaving you at the club, in my defence I did give them your address and asked them to make sure you got home.” I said finally deciding on a pin white blouse and some bck trousers, I’d decide on a jacket ter.
“You gave an my address to them as well? They might come knocking in the night and then what will I do?” Rory said mockingly, his voice growing high pitch towards the end.
“Rory shut up, you’d probably love that.”
“Probably.”
“So are we good?”
He paused silence on the line before he sighed.
“I guess but you owe me a better night out in return. Promise?”
“Promise.” I agreed easily.
“Good. Right we’ll go get ready, enjoy your new sad partner and if the vampire is hot let me know.”
“Freak.”
“Byeeeeee.” The phone call ended mid bye and as it did my cat attacked my new pants again making it clear he wasn’t happy about missing his breakfast.
——
Entering the station I’d only arrived about twenty minutes early just to see where my new desk was as I was pretty sure we were being given our own office in the building. The police Hq was a very modern building being all grey concrete and rge gss panels but the interior was surprisingly clean, at least a lot cleaner than the old station I’d been based at.
Heading to the front desk I asked if they could call ahead to chief Phillips to get me clearance and waited on a stiff unyielding chair waiting for the man to appear. The chief had been a friend of my fathers when he was alive so I had known him most of my life, but this would be my first time working under him and he has made it exceptionally clear that I would be getting no preferential treatment.
Not being kept long Phillips exited from the elevator and signalled me to join him going up. Getting into the lift he waited for the doors to shut before answering my greeting.
“How’d you get on st night?” He didn’t turn to me as he spoke watching the numbers tick by on the sign.
“Fine, we didn’t get much, their was rust on the body, elbows and shoes, we think she was killed elsewhere but Rami wanted to wait for the tests to come back and for our consultant to show to question them, any idea when to expect them?”
“Nine, apparently. Be careful of both of them.” He responded briskly.
“There’s two vampires coming?”
“No, be careful of Rami and the vampire. He put a lot of good offices away in a sting he carried out st year, got told not to pursue it but he kept digging. That’s why he’s our problem now, don’t let him slip you up.” A look of disgust sat on his face as he spoke.
“Well since I’m not involved in any corruption I should be fine.” I commented offhandedly and as the doors opened Phillips stepped out and I heard him mutter under his breath.
“Neither were they.” With a cough clearing his throat Phillips pointed out onto the floor ahead, it was an open pn office with sections decided into gss rooms but for the most part the entire office was open and visible to each other. “On the left we have financial crime, they’ve got the most floor space given they get the most funding here. Straight ahead you have county lines investigations, narcotics and trafficking. On the left behind the partition you have my office and tucked into the corners yours and detective Khatri. I’ll walk you over.”
I followed behind Phillips as he led the way seeing most of the offices empty with only odd members of staff taking notes at this time of day. As we passed the partition I saw Rami sat down in what must be our office. Getting closer I saw two matching desks to the back of the room with a small divider between them, and one small table and chair facing them. Otherwise it was a standard office apart from the usually blindly bright fluorescent lights being slightly dimmer than the rest of the floor.
“Tox report came back and some samples from forensics to read over, no autopsy yet , they’re waiting to see if she’ll come back. Go see if Khatris found anything and like I said, the Vamp is here at nine, you need anything let me know I’ll be next door. “
I nodded in response as Phillips finished talking and entered my new office Rami finally looking up from the notes on his desk, as I hung my jacket up on the rack it didn’t avoid my notice that he was in the same clothes he’d worn the night before.
“Evening, I photocopied the reports and left them on your desk. Get settled and let me know what you think. I’d like to go over everything we know before they get here.”
I nodded, walking round to my desk and seeing the mountain of folders already piled on my desk. Looking at Rami he gave me a knowing smile as I slumped into my stiff chair and pulled the first report forward.
“So Jessica Howle, twenty six, no prior criminal history, tox report came back clean except for multiple traces of an unidentified toxic found in previous victims of a vampire attack. Anything else?” Rami asked as he began to jot notes down on the white board in the corner.
“Rust was present on her, as well as two different blood signatures, her own and another humans. Her own blood had unknown parasites in it that seemed to merge with the red blood cells in a way not previously seen. She’s been dead at least forty eight hours so we have another twenty four before we know if she’s going to rise again.” I added, putting my own note that the body was being held in confinement at the morgue so if Jessica did rise she wouldn’t hurt anyone else until a professional could collect her.
“Well if she does come back from the dead, we can ask her some questions about the killer, which would make a murder case almost trivial.” Rami added his eyes, scanning the notes on the board. “We need to wait for her to get the all clear to be autopsied, check if she has any other wounds besides the obvious.”
“Has someone been sent to notify the parents?” I queried.
“No, only the fathers alive, mother passed away a few years back. They didn’t seem close from what we’ve gleaned online about her but we can head out once we’ve met our helper.” Rami responded.
I pced the st of the files back on my desk and scanned the clock seeing five past nine, they were te.
“How are you feeling?” I asked Rami.
“Uncomfortable, never been around one and the idea creeps me out. You?”
“Not to fussed, they’re hardly going to try something in the middle of a police office where everyone can see them. To be fair though I only met my first st night before I met you.” I commented off handedly taking a look around the office, hardly anyone remained now, only two people in financial crimes and Phillips next door. The floor was almost eerie this quiet.
“ Where you okay? What happened?” Rami asked, snapping me from my look.
“Fine honestly, it was that club you picked me up from, apparently vampires frequent it and my friend thought that would be the perfect way to celebrate getting this job. The vampire was fine though, no funny business, even helped get my friend home when I had to bail.”
Rami just nodded looking at me warily and behind him I saw Phillips look at his phone briefly before leaving his office heading for the elevator.
“If you do feel uncomfortable just let me know and I can-“ I was cut off by Rami waving his hand.
“I’ll be fine, it’s my job and hardly going to be able to get away from it.” I just nodded as Rami went back to scanning the board. I looked back out to the floor and saw the two detectives in financial crime looking intently towards the pilr, looking at myself I saw nothing until Phillips came round the corner and in tow, our vampire consultant.
“Oh for fuck sake.” I excimed letting out a little ugh jolting Rami from his thoughts who saw the pair approaching.
