Ep.1399 Hunting and Being Hunted Part 5

The dragon was experimenting to try and increase the number of dragons from what he said. That makes me wonder if he did any experiments on enhancing the blood of species that already have dragon blood. After all, that would seem to be the easier path to getting more dragons.

I will have to wait and talk to him about it the next time I see him, it is going to be a long conversation. I will just have to be careful that I don’t piss him off again and get kicked out. I have a lot of questions to ask him, I just hope that I can remember all of them and not get distracted.

My musings are interrupted when I reach for more stone for the next obelisk and find none. A quick check shows that I have already used everything that was stored in my ring. I got lost in thought and turned all of the stone into obelisks without even noticing.

Because I was distracted by my thoughts, I only crafted them and didn’t enchant them. So, I go back and start enchanting them, but this time I keep my mind from wandering. Getting distracted while enchanting could be a little dangerous, even though I am really familiar with the enchantments.

Focusing completely on the enchanting helps me not notice the passing of the time. Luckily, I am finished with all of the obelisks well before the sun starts to set. I store the completed obelisks, eat some dinner, and then head out to resume my hunt.

This time, I get to the hunting area well before the dragonfish should be moving. This way, I will be able to detect them as they return to the shallows from the depths. If I can get a couple of groups, I should be able to get the remaining evolution points that I need.

Once I reach the area that I have chosen, I settle into the water and then wait for my prey. I send out a scan every minute or so and wait for the dragonfish to enter my range. It is boring, but it is better than swimming around and possibly attracting the attention of something big.

I have had more than enough of big things trying to eat me for one hunting trip. This hunt is much like fishing and fishing requires patience, which I am horrible at. It has barely been five minutes and I am already bored and trying to think of something to do.

It only takes a few more minutes before I give up and start swimming towards deeper waters. Fighting against something that wants to eat me will be less annoying than sitting around waiting. It is a sad truth, but I would rather risk my life than sit around being bored.

Before long, I detect a school of dragonfish that is heading towards the shallows. They are not directly ahead of me, but that is easily fixed and the distance shortens rapidly. I charge into them head on and start tearing them apart with my teeth and claws.

I start putting the corpses into my pouch as quickly as I can and keep my eyes peeled. I am expecting the blood to attract something, but not even small sharks show up. For nothing to be drawn to the blood is actually worrying because it means something is deterring them.

The only thing that could do that is a bigger predator that all the other predators are afraid of. Surprisingly, nothing shows up before I am done putting the corpses away, so I leave the area. However, as soon as I start moving I get the feeling that something is following me.

I can’t see or detect anything, which means it is either hidden or out of my range. I quickly switch to scanning for voids like I did to detect the hydrashark, but I still don’t detect anything. That means that it must be out of my scanning range, but it is somehow tracking me.

I don’t think that it could follow me without entering my range, which would suggest that it is below me. In these deeper waters, the ocean floor is outside of my scanning range, so it is possible. However, for it to be tracking me from that far away would mean it has amazing senses.

Then again, this is its natural environment so I shouldn’t be so surprised about it. Sharks can detect blood in the water from miles away, so other things will have similar abilities. While being tracked makes me nervous, I am not about to dive down there to see what it is.

Going through the bends once was enough for me, I don’t want to do it again if I can help it. So, unless it decides to come up after me, I am just going to ignore it and keep hunting. I only need a few more dragonfish and then I will finally be ready to evolve.

Although, to be safe while evolving I will need to return to the castle where Jarvis can guard me. Come to think of it, I don’t know how long the evolution might take this time. That means that I might need to put it off until after the honeymoon, sleeping through the wedding would get me killed.

I really don’t want to wait to evolve, but it probably isn’t worth taking the risk. When I have enough points to evolve, I will check with Lin and see how long until the wedding. If she agrees that I have enough time, I will evolve, if not I will have to put it off.

If there isn’t enough time, I will just spend whatever time I have left trying to level up. The sooner I can summon my angel, the more time I will have to level it up before the war. I will need to level it up to the point it is strong enough to help me against the demon lords.

I have no idea how many cores that is going to take, but I probably don’t have enough. If I do end up farming more experience, then my best bet would be to hunt demonic beasts. I may as well get cores while I am at it, because I don’t know what will happen after I level up.

The goddesses said that I won’t be able to get another class, meaning I probably won’t get exp anymore. I would prefer to avoid having to kill tons of beasts just to get cores and nothing else. Grinding without getting the exp reward sounds incredibly annoying and boring.

Anyway, that is a problem for the future and I need to focus on the present, at least while I am being hunted. The creature hasn’t shown itself yet, but the feeling of being followed has gotten stronger. Either the creature has gotten closer to me, or there is now more than one tracking me.

I finally manage to detect another school of dragonfish heading towards the shallows. I quickly change directions to intercept the school, but I feel whatever is chasing me do the same. I continue to ignore it as I close in on the dragon fish and slaughter them as quickly as I can.
