Chapter 11: The Art of Losing

John stood in the middle of the park, staring at his hand.

  Rock.

The kid beside him waved the winning scissors like a trophy.

“I LOST AGAIN!” the kid cheered.

  The crowd nearby clapped politely.

John checked the cosmic message floating faintly in the air.

  RESULT: PLAYER LOSS

The ace chip in his pocket stayed intact.

  No cracking.

  No dust.

  John nodded slowly.

  “Okay.”

  “So that’s the trick.”

  You didn’t lose by failing.

You lost by giving the win away.

  Which meant something important.

John couldn’t just throw games randomly.

The universe would twist probability and make him win anyway.

But if he helped someone else win—

  that counted.

He walked out of the park and into the city.

  The Loserverse was busy.

  People were proudly failing everywhere.

A boxing ring in the middle of the street.

A trivia contest outside a coffee shop.

  A massive billboard that read:

  WORLD FAILURE CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS

Stolen content warning: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.

  John rubbed his chin.

  “That looks promising.”

Inside the building, hundreds of contestants were sitting at desks.

A giant scoreboard hung above them.

  TRIVIA ROUND

The host spoke loudly into a microphone.

  “Remember contestants!”

  “Correct answers are penalties!”

  “Wrong answers advance you!”

  The crowd cheered.

John sat down at an empty desk.

  The host noticed him.

  “New challenger!”

  The room turned.

  “Name?”

  John shrugged.

  “John.”

  The scoreboard flashed.

  CONTESTANT: JOHN

The host read the first question.

“What is the capital of France?”

  John immediately knew the answer.

  Paris.

Which meant saying it would make him win.

  Which meant he would lose.

  He thought carefully.

The trick was to lose intentionally.

  But not accidentally win.

  John raised his hand.

  “Yes, John?”

  John answered confidently.

  “Banana.”

  The room erupted in applause.

  “WRONG!”

  The scoreboard flashed.

  JOHN ADVANCES

  John grinned.

  “Nice.”

  The second question came.

“How many sides does a triangle have?”

  Easy.

  Three.

  John leaned back.

  “Seven.”

  More applause.

  ADVANCES

  John relaxed slightly.

  This was working.

  Question three.

“What planet do we live on?”

  John answered instantly.

  “Soup.”

  The host pumped his fist.

  “AMAZINGLY INCORRECT!”

  The scoreboard climbed higher.

  John was approaching the finals.

  But something strange began happening.

  The questions became harder.

“Which element has atomic number 79?”

  John didn’t know that one.

Which meant answering randomly might accidentally be correct.

  He frowned.

  The House was adjusting.

  Trying to force a win.

  John thought carefully.

  Then he answered.

  “Table.”

  The host slammed the buzzer.

  “WRONG!”

  The crowd roared.

  John advanced again.

  Soon only two contestants remained.

  John.

And a nervous-looking guy sweating heavily.

The host raised the final card.

  “Final question.”

  The room went silent.

  The host read slowly.

“What is the answer to this question?”

  The other contestant panicked.

  “That’s impossible!”

  John smiled.

  Classic trap.

Any answer could accidentally be correct.

Which meant the House was trying to force a win again.

  John leaned into the microphone.

  “I don’t know.”

  The host froze.

  The scoreboard froze.

The system tried to process the response.

  ANSWER: I DON’T KNOW

  The system hesitated.

  Then the message appeared.

  INCORRECT

  The room exploded with cheers.

  “JOHN LOSES!”

The other contestant collapsed with relief.

  “I WON!”

  John stood up and stretched.

The cosmic notification appeared above him again.

  RESULT: PLAYER LOSS

The ace chip in his pocket glowed faintly.

For the first time since arriving in the Loserverse—

  it felt stable.

  John smiled.

  “Alright,” he said.

  “I’m getting good at this.”

But far above the Loserverse, inside the distant machinery of the House, a new calculation had begun.

Because the anomaly was doing something unexpected again.

  Adapting.

  Learning.

And the House had just realized a dangerous possibility.

If John Six Aces mastered losing…

Then even the Loserverse wouldn’t be able to stop him.
