Chapter 9: The Loserverse

  John landed hard.

The trash bags burst under him with a wet thump and a puff of something that smelled like old noodles and disappointment.

He lay there for a moment staring up at the sky.

  The sky stared back.

  It was gray.

  Not storm-gray.

  Failure-gray.

  John slowly sat up.

  “Okay,” he said.

  “This place feels weird.”

The alley looked normal at first glance. Brick walls. Flickering lamp. A dented soda machine humming quietly.

But then John noticed the posters.

  PARTICIPATION TROPHIES – HALF OFF

  SECOND PLACE PARADE THIS WEEKEND

  WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LOSER BRACKET FINALS

  John blinked.

  “That’s new.”

Across the alley, two people were playing chess on a crate.

One of them deliberately knocked his own king over.

  The other guy cheered.

  “YES! I LOST!”

  The crowd nearby applauded.

  John tilted his head.

  “Oh no.”

A glowing message appeared faintly in the air.

  Not from the House.

  From something else.

  REALITY LAYER DETECTED

  LOSERVERSE

  John groaned.

  “You’re kidding.”

  The message continued.

  CORE RULE

  Winning = Losing

  Losing = Winning

John looked down at the ace chips in his hand.

  They glowed faintly.

  The symbol flickered.

  Ace.

Then the chip cracked in half.

  The glow vanished.

  “Ah,” John said slowly.

  “That’s bad.”

A man nearby ran past carrying a medal.

“I GOT LAST PLACE!” he shouted happily.

Another guy slapped him on the back.

  “Congratulations!”

  John stood up.

“Alright,” he muttered. “Let’s test something.”

He walked over to the chess players.

  “Mind if I try?”

The two players looked at him suspiciously.

“You good at chess?” one asked.

  John shrugged.

  “I win sometimes.”

  The entire crowd gasped.

  “Arrogant,” someone whispered.

John sat down and made the worst move he could think of.

  He sacrificed his queen immediately.

  The opponent panicked.

  “You can’t do that!”

  “I just did.”

Three moves later the opponent accidentally checkmated himself.

  The crowd erupted.

  “WHAT A LOSER!”

  “AMAZING!”

  “HE LOST SO FAST!”

  John looked at the board.

  “I… won?”

  The air shimmered.

  A cosmic notification appeared.

  SYSTEM RESULT

  You lost.

  Congratulations.

  John’s ace chip cracked again.

  Another one turned to dust.

  John sighed.

  “Right.”

  “Right, right.”

In the Loserverse, winning counted as losing.

  And losing counted as winning.

  Which meant something very unfortunate.

  John Six Aces—

the man who could not stop winning—

was now the biggest loser in the universe.

The crowd lifted him onto their shoulders.

“A TRUE CHAMPION OF FAILURE!” someone shouted.

“THE FASTEST LOSER WE’VE EVER SEEN!”

  John rubbed his temples.

  “This is the worst dimension.”

Across the street, a billboard flickered to life.

  It showed a roulette wheel.

  Except every slot said LOSE.

A quiet voice echoed faintly from somewhere beyond reality.

  The House.

  Watching.

  Learning.

  John stared at the billboard.

“Of course you’d send me here.”

  The billboard message changed.

  WELCOME TO THE LOSERVERSE

  GOOD LUCK FAILING

  John cracked his knuckles.

  “Alright.”

He pulled one remaining ace chip from his pocket.

  “If winning is losing…”

  He flipped the chip.

“…then maybe I just need to lose harder.”

Somewhere deep in the cosmic casino, the House paused its calculations.

Because this might be the one place where John Six Aces finally had a disadvantage.

And the universe was about to discover something new.

What happens when the best winner in existence…

  tries to lose.
